Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

What exactly are finger foods and when can I start introducing them to my baby?

Re: What exactly are finger foods and when can I start introducing them to my baby?

The Bump Expert

By eight to nine months of age, when your baby starts to develop his pincer grasp, you can start to think about offering him some beginner finger foods.  Finger foods are foods that baby can easily pick up and easily mash between his gums, and they help baby begin to learn to self-feed. Start with any foods that baby has already had, and anything that you can make into small soft bits. Babies do not chew until they get their molars in -- before then, they mash food between their gums!  Serve finger foods as part of the main meal. For example, you may need to spoon feed cereal and peaches, but your baby can manage to feed himself small pieces of cracker.  Let your baby discover the tastes and textures of finger foods. Watch your baby carefully as you give him very small pieces of:

[  ] Whole grain crackers

[  ] Teething biscuits

[  ] Cheese cubes

[  ] Cooked pasta

[  ] Small pieces of ripe fruit

[  ] Small pieces of cooked vegetables (avoid raw veggies for now)

[  ] Beans

[  ] O's or rice puffs cereal

My baby loves pieces of scrambled eggs (ok'd by dr!) cubes of sweet potato, well-cooked pasta (especially mac and cheese!) and melon.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My daughter LOVE grilled cheese. I use two slices of whole grain bread and american cheese(NO BUTTER or MARGARINE, use cooking spray). Once cool I cut it into small pieces and she eats her lunch all my herself! She too loves Baby Goldfish, Kix, Gerbers Puffs, cooked carrots, pancake(cut into small pieces). I read that feeding what your eating is good too so if we have lasagna for dinner I cut it into small pieces and she LOVES that. Rice with beans too!!!

My son LOVES home baked sweet potato fries (julienne, drizzle w/ olive oil and bake until tender), and very ripe avocado!

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My son is almost 9 months. I just started giving him O's, but every time I do he does a gag reflex and tries (and sometimes does) to throw them up. Any suggestions on ways to get him to understand he can swallow them.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

dpeters2000 - my son had the same problem with his gag reflex until he was almost one! I discovered that he really hated that crunchy texture and did much better with softer foods. He also did better if he was able to munch on something (like small piece of tortilla) and bite off pieces on his own. If we put the pieces in his mouth, he was more likely to panic and gag. Now my little guy loves tortilla with cheese melted on it, any kinds of softer breads, cooked noodles (esp. mac & cheese), soft pieces of cooked sweet potato and fruit. He's just now getting better at crunchy textures. He still gags and spits up every now and then, but it certainly doesn't slow him down!

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

For dpeters2000, Try giving puffs first, they melt in the mouth quickly so there is little time for them to cough them back out.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My 9 month old son is having the same problem. We just tried introducing the puffs that dissolve in their mouth and he keeps gagging. I feel bad but he keeps trying to eat them. Maybe we'll try some other foods like you said. I'm just afraid of him choking.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

gagging a little bit, is part of their learning process - My daughter did it too, especially around 8 and 9 months when she was just starting - but now she's learned to smoosh food around in her mouth before trying to swallow it. The puffs are really quick to dissolve (happy baby brand doesn't have as much junk in it as gerber) Another food that is good - gnocchi. My daughter is now 1 and she has a hard time picking up noodles, we found that she can really grab ahold of a piece of gnocchi - we just cut it up into bite size bits.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My son is now 10 months and we've moved past the gagging pretty much, but now he won't swallow the food. He puts it in his mouth, chews for a while and then pushes it out of his mouth with his tongue. Occasionally a piece goes down, but majority gets pushed back out. We've tried puffs, cut up cheerios, small cheese cubes and ripe apples. Has anyone experienced this and do you have any advice to get him to swallow the food?

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My 10 month old daughter loves tofu pieces, peas, cooked potato cubes, cheese, cooked whole wheat or rice pasta, peeled apple, pear and melon chunks are great too. The frozen peas are great because you just rinse and thaw them. I give her Cheerios and Happy Baby Organic puffs but am trying to avoid a lot of processed food, I am not all organic but probably about 70%,

Q: My daughter will be a year old 2moro and I cant get her to eat anything but fruit and crackers, she still gets her formula at nap time so I know she is getting some nutrients then but is it enough?

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

@ dpeters2000 my daughter also did the gagging thing, and when she did I would get her attention and do an exaggerated act of chewing and she would copy me. That helped her to realize that she has to mush it up a little more with her gums before she could try and swallow.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

Kylie is now 9 months and has been eating finger foods for quite some time! We started at about 6 months with the really easy stuff. We also got her a pack of Munchkin Fresh Food Feeders which I HIGHLY reccomend- they are $8 for 2 look them up you wont regret it! Kylie still drinks formula and eats jarred food & a huge variety of finger food. She is CrAzY about finger food :D there are so many things you can try... I've noticed A LOT of baby's would prefer to start with the soft food, which is understandable, & do gag a lot in the begining. Kylie did & still does every now and then on something new but that's just part of the process. One of the first was watermelon which is the fav but I prefer to give her canteloupe since it's better for her... melon, gerber yoggies, gerber puffs & lil crunchies, graham crackers/teether bisquits/cookies, banana, jello, slightly over cooked pasta, goldfish, etc... anything that is going to be pretty easy for her to mush down... She is 9 months with Almost All the sypmtoms of teething (has been for months) but no breakthroughs still - poor girl it's gonna be rough. Good luck everyone. Let your babies explore just keep a close eye ;)

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

my almost 10.5 month old son loves avocado, canteloupe, pears (he'd rather copy me and eat it right from the core then the cubes i cut up for him), puffs, green beans, we've tried scrambled eggs and cottage cheese too but he gave us some really funny faces. we'll try those again in a few weeks.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

anything that can "melt or be sucked on" without fear of choking . Ex: cheese doodle he can suck on until it is done, but M&Ms are too dangerous (common sense, but just an example to answer q)

My daughter is 12 months now and we just started her on chicken, she LOVES it. Really small pieces of course. For a younger age I also recommend rice cakes :)

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My 10 month old loves to eat puffs, mums (get at Target), cheerios, whole grain crackers and goldfish. He also enjoys yo yo baby yogurt, sweet potatoes, cooked pasta, pancakes, scrambled eggs, cheese toast and soft granola bars (nutri grain bars). I give him chunks of cheese, pieces of banana, blueberries, pears and oranges and soft veggies such as peas, carrots and avocado. He's a pretty good eater!

karalanders | March 16 , 2011 8:57 AM

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

When I first switched to baby food with texture, my son would gag and throw it all up. If it was finger foods, he was OK. If it was smoothed food it was OK. But if you mixed them together, totally gagged. Now that he is older, I have slowly started to work in things of mixed textures. He's such a great eater, he will eat almost anything we will let him. His first love was Cheerios, then yogurt bites, pancakes, mac and cheese and believe it or not, he would even harass me for my salsa and eggs. Repeatedly. :o) He will eat eggs, avocado, cereal bits, cheese, tortillas, chicken bits, peas, corn, carrots, tofu, cottage cheese, keifer, yogurt, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, any kind of noodles. He will also take bites out of a cheeseburger or sandwich. He also loves crackers and cookies of any kind. The kid tries to pull the sandwich and burgers from my hand, LOL! He has taken to pulling off pieces really fast before I pull it away so he can feed himself.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

I have the hardest time gettig my 8 month old daughter to eat baby food. She prefers finger foods but just chews them and spits them out with only a little if any going down. I worry that she isn't eating enough solids. Did anyone else have that problem?

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My little guy loves it all cheese cubs with turkey cut into bite size pieces and crackers pizza cut into little pieces, I even bake homemade chicken tenders for him and cut them up those and mac n cheese are his favorites. I try to feed him everything I make or get for dinner so that he has variety and so that we don't have a picky eater on our hands.

My daughter is 9 months with no teeth what are some good finger foods i can give her?I have given her puffs but id like to give her real food.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

fungranny2011 - a 13 week old baby is much too young for finger and table foods! I would say 7-8 months give those a try. Formula or breastmilk should be the main source of nutrients for the first year of life.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My baby is 10 months old...I was reading a lot of the comments and it seems that a lot of parents feed their babies cheese...so it is okay for 10 month old babies to eat cheese? Thanks for all your inputs, it is helpful to read what everybody else is doing.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My LO is 8 1/2 months. He has been eating Gerber crunchies (or store brand) since he was about 6 mo. He started eating the MUMs @ about 5 months. Now he eats goldfish, cheerios, and kix for snack foods. He is still breastfed and eats jarred baby food and baby cereals, but he also gets whatever we eat so long as it is soft enough to gum.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

My 6 month old DD loves Mum Mum Rice Crackers. We tried the Gerber Yogurt Melt and she hated them which is funny cause DH loves them. She loves her baby food and crunchy stuff like the rice crackers and gerber cookies. We started her on baby food when she was a little over 4 month and she has loved it ever since.

SnackPack624 | September 22 , 2011 7:14 PM

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

Ideally, babies should have nothing but breast milk and/or formula during the first 6 months of life. I've decided on organic baby formula based on a doctor's recommendation. After a few months of just veggies, I also introduced organic baby cereals. As far as the cereals went, I don't remember if I made a distinction between rice cereal and anything else. His digestion was so good that I never noticed a difference and I was pretty clear on his schedule, since I potty trained him at 11 months.

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

my daughter loved string cheese (peeled up into smaller pieces), yogurt melts by Gerber, puffs by Gerber... and she's 16 months old and now loves cheese curls, animal crackers, peanut butter and jelly, and mac n cheese

Q&A: Finger foods for baby?

Since my daughter doesn't like any of the baby food, I mean NOTHING, I had to start giving her something for meals. I've cut up small pieces of buttered toast, french fries, Gerber crawlers puffs (she prefers the savory flavored rather than the sweet), and pretty much whatever we are eating for our meals. Some things she'll try, others she spits out, but because she refused any and all baby foods (yes even bananas!) we had to improvise.
