Q&A: Breast lumps and nursing?

The Bump Expert

Everyone’s breasts are different. Some women, who are prone to getting lumps, may have a usually benign condition called fibrocystic breast disease. Any time you find a lump you should see your doctor, just to make sure it isn’t something more serious. As for breastfeeding, the lumps shouldn’t be a complication. You just want to make sure that a lump isn’t a plugged duct that could lead to an infection, so definitely talk to your doctor and a lactation consultant.

Q&A: Breast lumps and nursing?

I have a friend who had the same problem and she did breastfeed her baby. She has a master of science in nursing degree and she studied about these things. She didn't seem concerned at all, so I don't think you should worry about this. Worry more for your own health. Go to a doctor to make sure everything's ok.

Q&A: Breast lumps and nursing?

I second what Mia said. I also know someone who has a masters of nursing degree and she used to say that she knows how to take care of her child because she was taught. To be honest, I was a little concerned about her and her child though, because she's a very self centered person, she thinks she knows everything and wouldn't take anyone's advice.

Q&A: Breast lumps and nursing?

My best friend, Karina, was recently discharged from the Drug Rehab center and few days ago she realized that she has three lumps on the right breast. Does anyone knows if drug addiction can cause fibrocystic breast disease? If so what she is supposed to do?

Q&A: Breast lumps and nursing?

From what I know breastfeeding is contraindicated in case of any breast disease. You should definitely request a specialist's opinion and in the meantime you can try some baby formulas as they are very similar to the maternal milk and your baby will like them.

Q&A: Breast lumps and nursing?

Three years ago I've took a rn to msn online and now I am working as a nurse at the New York Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology. I've seen there a lot of patients who have fibrocystic breast disease and they didn't have any problem with breastfeeding. This is a very common disease and it doesn't affect lactation but you should definitely see a doctor if there is any change on your lumps' structure and consistency.
