Q&A: Producing enough breastmilk for multiples?

I’m nervous I won’t be able to produce enough milk to breastfeed multiple babies. Does the body naturally allow for this or do I have to do things to up my supply?

The Bump Expert

The amount of milk you produce actually has nothing to do with how many babies you have – it’s all about how much and how often you breastfeed or pump. So whether you have one baby, twins, or more, your body should compensate by producing more milk, the more you breastfeed (or pump).

The key is to start pumping or breastfeeding right after the babies are born, so make sure your doctors and nurses know of your breastfeeding plans in advance. If you’re having trouble breastfeeding at first, many hospitals offer lactation specialists on staff to help show you the basics. These nurses are specially trained and are there to lend all of their insight, encouragement, and advice – so take advantage!

Q&A: Producing enough breastmilk for multiples?

Let's put it this way. I was unable to get my son to have a proper latch on one of my breasts, so he fed exclusively for 8 months from just one breast. The most important thing to remember is to feed on demand. Scheduling feedings can often lead to decreased supply, because there's not adequate stimulation. Your supply is determined by demand. When those babies go through growth spurts, they automatically will want to nurse more often, which in turn causes your supply to increase again. If you're really determined to exclusively breastfeed both, find a good support group with moms who have done it!

Q&A: Producing enough breastmilk for multiples?

I had twins 6 weeks ago and I can't produce enough milk for them. I have the hospital grade pump and do it every 3 hours or so. I am also taking the fenugreek pills and still not enough. I wanted to bf only but I have to supplement with formula.
