How do I express my milk by hand?

To express milk manually, start by placing your fingers and thumb on your breast. Fingers should be about an inch below your nipple; thumb about an inch above your nipple. Next, use them to press your breast tissue back toward your chest wall, and then roll them forward to squeeze out the milk. (Try not to slide or move your fingers, just press and roll.) Milk can spray in all directions, so try aiming into a bowl or coffee mug for collection (or a towel or sink, if you aren't saving the milk for baby). Repeat this until you aren't getting any milk, and then rotate your hand a little to squeeze milk from another section of your breast. Using both hands, you can work your way completely around one breast before moving on to the other. It may take a little effort to find the right spot for your fingers -- practice makes perfect.
