Re: Can I eat peanuts or tree nuts while I'm breastfeeding?
Yes, and why not? The latest theory of allergy suggests that you don't want to avoid allergens (usually proteins that elicit an allergic reaction) but rather, you want to be exposed to small amounts of them. When you eat certain foods, it's possible that some of the protein will get passed into your milk, but the amount that does will be tiny. The presence of antibodies in the milk and perhaps sensitized white cells and other immune factors may diminish the negative reaction that could occur with these foods and actually decrease the risk of the baby becoming sensitive.
