How should I position my twins to breastfeed?

Re: How should I position my twins to breastfeed?

The Bump Expert

Having two babies hungry and crying at the same time must be one of the most heart-wrenching aspects of caring for multiples. The easiest way to deal with this is by simultaneously breastfeeding your twins. It can take a little time for mom and both babies to master this, but once you figure it out, you'll save time and tears (for everyone).

The basic simultaneous feeding positions are:

• Double clutch (football) hold

• Combination clutch-cradle hold

• Double cradle (or crisscross cradle) hold

See how to perform these at Breastfeeding.com

You'll probably want to try different variations on these positions, and switch it up depending on the age and size of your babies. Check out more info on breastfeeding multiples at different stages here: www.karengromada.com.

Also, experiment with different types of pillows that are designed to help with breastfeeding twins. Bed or sofa pillows in different combinations at different angles work better for some moms because these pillows can be more flexible. Don’t be afraid to try different things.

No matter which position or pillow(s) you use, remember that each baby's head should be higher than his hips. This will help baby control the flow of milk, especially during the let-down, and it helps keep the food in baby's tummy and avoid reflux.
