Q&A: Time between feedings?

Is it okay for my newborn to go longer than three hours between feedings?

Yes. Most newborns have one four- to five-hour sleep period per day, which is fine. In this case, you don't have to wake your baby to feed. However, most babies need at least eight feedings every 24 hours. These feedings are often clustered together, which is fine, as long as you're getting them all in. The overall number of daily feedings is much more important than the intervals between.
