Q&A: Clomid basics?

What is Clomid, and when should I go on it? What should I expect when I'm on it and how effective is it?

Re: What is Clomid, and when should I go on it? What should I expect when I'm on it and how effective is it?

The Bump Expert

Clomid, or Clomiphene Citrate, is a medication the blocks the receptor for the female hormone estrogen. This causes the pituitary gland to secrete more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which in turn stimulates the ovary to make an egg.

This medication is useful in helping women who do not ovulate regularly to produce an egg every month, but has limited use in helping women who already ovulate become pregnant. If ovulation does not occur using this medication, there are others available that may. If the medication successfully stimulates ovulation but more than four to six cycles go by without a pregnancy, other therapies should be attempted.

Ovulation is successfully stimulated with Clomid in up to 80% of women who do not otherwise ovulate, and 50% of these women become pregnant. Approximately 90% of the pregnancies achieved through Clomid occur within the first four cycles on the medication.

Clomid is associated in some women with mood swings and depression, but both should go away once off the medication.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Im on my second round of Clomid, my RE started me off at 50mg the first cycle and up'ed my dose to 100mg for five days this cycle. I would suggest start off with the lower dose to see how your body reacts and to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation (which is a side effect to this drug). Oh ya, and not to be a downer, but it definatley causes mood swings and for me major hot flashes!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I recently finished my second round of Clomid as well. My doctor started me off at 50 mg the first cycle and when that didn't work, prescribed 100mg for five days. I have been off the pill since December and have yet to have AF without medication (prometrium). I'm 19 days into this current cycle and still no happy face with the OV predictor. I'm pretty sure this month will be another of the same, no ovulation. Any advice? What is my next step?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Clomid was horrible. I went up to 200 mg for my 4th month and am still not ovulating. I have PCOS but clomid did not help. I had horrible hot flashes and mood swings.. I DO NOT like that stuff!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Im on my second round of Clomid and the doctor increased my dosage to 100mg because my follicles wasn't maturing fast enough. I start the Clomid as soon as i start my next period. Taking provera to engage that.

How about enjoying being a hot, young, trendy couple and lose the "gotta have a baby 'tude!" It makes life amazing. If you're able to get pregnant...great. If not, even better! Kids live like 80 years...you can enjoy a great time by the beach!

I have been taking Clomid now for 1 cycle. I can honestly say that I had almost no side effects. I am now just praying that AF stays away for the next 9 months.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Clomid's side effects are pretty crappy! The week of ovulation I was so sick, I had to take it off work....but it was all worth it! I got preggers in the first month and am ready to deliver any day now!! Good Luck to the rest of you!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Okay, I think it may be a miracle drug! Here's why: We had been not totally TTC but not prevevnting either for a year and a half and no results, so when we got a new Dr. (change in insurance) I asked him about it. They did bloodwork, (which verified my PCOS and very high Testosterone that they apparently weren't concerned about clearing up my high testosterone first which is beyond me!) and wanted to do some expensive procedure and I asked if there was anything cheaper to try first, so they checked my husband out and then prescribed Clomid to me. I took my first and only round of Clomid at the beginning of August, and according to the Dr.'s instructions, we were supposed to have intercourse every other day for a week after my period... It turned out to be a very busy week for us so we ONLY had intercourse ONCE, and Clomid worked off of that one time of intercourse, on my first round of pills! But, I got prescribed Clomid OVER THE PHONE, believe it or not, after the doc got my bloodwork back after my first visit with him. That means no one went over the side effects with me, (my mom was the one that told me about the effects after I had taken it!)And now that it worked, I am waiting to find out how many I am having, twins, triplets... (though it only appears to be one, but I'm only in my 7th week!) So good luck either way!

I'm currently on my second month of Clomid and have had no symptoms. I took it at night and that has really seemed to help. Here's hoping that this month will work!

Atalanta0214 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I am considering using Clomid because when I am not on the pill I don't get my period. My Dr told me that there is a 5-9% chance of twins but no multiples. I hope that if I do have to use it that the side effects aren't too bad!

Jill704 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I took clomid for 3 months on days 5 through 9. Prior to clomid I did not ovulate at all on my own---and had no reason why. I started with 50mg the first month, 100mg the second and 150mg the third. I got my blood drawn on the 21st day. My progesterone levels were never steller always around 10-12, however we did conceive on the third month. I had hot flashes, mood swings, and terrible vaginal dryness (I used preconceive from walmart to remedy this). Clomid worked for us.

chukwudebe |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

As stated above, Clomid gave me MAJOR hot flashes at night that would wake me up. In addiiton, i had very low energy and just did not feel myself. However, i did become pregnant on my 3rd cycle and i am now currently 25 weeks pregnant. So, as you might expect - i am a huge fan of Clomid even though i did not like some of the side effects.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I took Clomid for both my pregancies. I have a wonderful 3 year old daughter and a baby boy on the way, due in January. Everyone reacts differently. It worked for me and FYI the chances of getting mulitples is very low.

madibear'smom |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was on clomid for 2 cycels. I did have hot flashes, but no other side effects. My doctor told me up front he has only had 2 sets of mulitples in his 30 years of giving this RX. I have a history of twins in my family. Today I am 10weeks pregnant with ONLY ONE!! I would recommend trying clomid (I was on a combination of RX to make me have a cycle and then the clomid to make me ovulate). I bought a 30 day ovulation kit the second month and hit it on the mark! After trying for 10 months with no success I thought it was very quick for me to get PG on only my second month of clomid.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I do not ovulate on my own and needed the help of Clomid. It caused me to be terribly moody BUT it also worked. We got pregnant on the first round (50 mg) and I just had my sweet baby boy this past Tuesday! Good luck and don't give up! They are so worth the pain!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I am on my first cycle 100mg and have had no side effects as of yet. I finished taking 11 days ago and have been fine. I am also surprised this talks about the fact it only helps you ovulate from what I have gethered it also helps to produce "better" eggs. Some people ovulate but don't conceive because the eggs are not viable. Anyway I'm praying this is our only round. Best wishes to everyone.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I had no side affects to Clomid. I have PCOS and was on 2500 mg of metformin and 100mg of clomid when I became pregnant. We became pregnant in the 6th (and last) cycle of clomid. Just try to relax and stay healthy! My son is 20 months now and we are trying for baby number 2.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

We had to use Clomid on our first two pregnancies, then we had three freebies. So now we're trying for our sixth baby. This TTC, we used Clomid for seven months (the longest we've ever had to stay on it). I got pregnant but miscarried last Friday at 7 weeks prego. We will go back on Clomid after one regular cycle. I can't wait to get trying again. It's emotional (especially since the Clomid makes me a bit crazy), but totally worth it! Trying to Conceive Ticker

I just started my first round of Clomid, 50mg days 5-9.My Husband and I have been TTC for 3 years now naturally with no luck and I'm in my early twenties, and not overweight. My mom has PCOS and I have many of the symptoms, but the tests have come but fine. So far, I haven't had any bad side effects from the drug. I take it at night with my prenatal vitamins, because it makes me feel slightly naseaus and gives me a slight headache, but I just take it right before bed and wake up feeling fine. We have been TTC since May with no luck. I had some blood tests run and my progesterone level is 4.6.... should be 13 so it is significantly low. My DR suggested Clomid even though we haven't been trying for a year because my level was so low. Today was my first pill and I just hope I dont get all the nausea and other side effects I hear about. Hopefully this helps.... more blood tests to come 7 days after ovulation. :)

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I had a miscarriage at the end of September, and have since been diagnosed with PCOS. I am starting my first round of Clomid with my next cycle. Can anyone tell me if the symptoms progressively get worse with each pill, or do they stay about the same? I think AF is Aunt Flow (aka MP)

JordanB23 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I have been taking metformin to regulate my periods and hopefully get me to ovulate since July. Since we didn't conceive yet, I was lately given Clomid too, in hopes that the combination would work, since the metformin prompted AF to arrive more consistently. We've been trying for over a year :)

rinnmarie09 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

AF= Aunt Flow (aka your period) Me and DH saw my RE today and since I have had PCOS since I was 16 (28 now) and only get AF when on birthcontrol and we are ready to our family she put me on Clomid and 500mg of Metformin. I was unclear when she said to be sexually active. Was it 7 days after my period or was it 14 days after clomid. Can anyone advise me on what you were told? Thanks and all the best to you all ttc!

amaksym05 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

amaksym, My RE told me to be active days 10-16 of my cycle...so that would be after your period (like 3-9 days after your period commences). I was advised to take clomid at days 5-9, but I have heard different regimens for different people. I have PCOS and that is why we finally decided to try Clomid. I start Clomid on my next cycle, so fingers crossed. Good luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

We tried for around a yr maybe before deciding we needed to see a dr. For me I had pain during intercourse, the Clomid can cause some vaginal dryness or make the cervical mucas thicker. This makes it hard for his swimmers to get up stream. To help with this my dr gave me another medication. My cycle just started a couple days ago, so this will be our first go with both medications.

We have been trying to have a baby actively for a year and a half now, currently, I am on my second cycle of using Clomid. It didn't work in getting me pregnant the first cycle, but it did make me ovulate and bumped my levels to where they need to be. I have never experienced and side effects from this medication and I am currently taking 100mg a day. Hopefully this month is the month for us!

I was given Clomid when we were TTC. I have Endometriosis and PCOS. While I didn't have any side effects that I could tell, the cysts on my ovaries doubled so I was immediately taken off after the first month. I was devastated not knowing what the next step was. The following month: I was ecstatic to learn I was pregnant with twins a month after stopping the clomid. Thanks to Clomid I now have happy, healthy 7 year old twins. Be patient and try not to stress and it will happen. Good luck everyone :)

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I have PCOS and was not ovulating at all. I took three rounds of the Clomid, going from 50 mg the first round, 100 mg the second, and 150 mg the third. We were very active during the time I was supposed to be ovulating. The first month my progesterone levels(have to be 15 to even get pregnant) went from .13 to 3.4. The next month was 14.5 and this last time was 21.9. Found out a couple days before Christmas that I'm pregnant! I did seem to have some dull aching in the area of my ovaries. But with us TTC for over a year, it was worth it. Now I am just praying for a very healthy pregnancy. ;o) Also... I was told Clomid can increase your chances of multiples. So I am very curious to find out if we will or won't be welcoming more than one baby this coming Summer!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I are just starting to talk about taking Clomid. I had blood done at my doc just the other day and everything came back normal but she said for some reason I am not ovulating every month. She said I am right around the year mark so it is a personal choice if i want to. Because it is a fertility drug, my insurance doesn't cover it. So my husband went online and check prices and we were happy to find out that it doesn't cost as much as we thought it was going to. So he really wants to try on our own for a few more moth. The doctor said to help out I could trying being more active and find a better work out routine and that might spring some better ovulation. But I am excited to start this if we need to. I am thinking the side effects are way worth it. We have been TTC for about 2 years now, I am so ready to have a baby.

Mrs.Andersen |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Good luck to everyone! Clomid works miracles for us. This is my 2nd pregnancy on clomid. Both times we only did one round days 3-7 50mg! I must admit the hot flashes had me going crazy but I can't say that I had any mood swings. If your MD recommends it for you I would def go for it. Please keep in mind Clomid can not do it all for you. You increase your chances by charting and using OPKs as well.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I tried to get pregnant for over a year when I first went to see a doctor. The only thing he wanted to do for me was to test my basil body temp and when there was nothing significant, he prescribed Clomid. I took it for one week and it gave me some of the worst side effects you could imagine. I couldn't continue taking the Clomid so he prescirbed femara. I was on this medication for a couple months, with no results. My doctor didn't seem to want to find out what was wrong with me, he just wanted to prescirbe medication. I eventually went back to another MD the next year and even though he thought he had figured out what was wrong, he again just wanted to prescirbe medicine. Since I am really not interested in taking so much medication, I did some research and found that my problems were pretty much from low progesterone. I ordered a cream supplement and the next month after starting using it, I found out that I was pregnant. This isn't the solution for eveyone, but I do encourage you to keep your hopes up and find a good MD that will actually help you figure out your specific problem instead of just putting you in a cookie cutter box of medication. If the medication works well for you than that is wonderful, just listen to your body and make sure you are doing your owe research.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I just finished my 2nd round of Clomid, and am on day 13 right now (waiting on hubby to wake up, lol). We've been TTC since Dec. 2008 with no luck so far, but I got diagnosed with PCOS over the summer, and have been on Metformin and Provera to try to get things going. I did have a period on my own without the Provera this time (first time since either Feb. or March...) so I'm feeling really hopeful this month, even though DH leaves on Monday to go to Ohio for a week for work, and we won't get as much time together as hoped this cycle.

AmbrosiaHino |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Where can I find this progesterone cream? I too have not had any success with medication, as my doctor wouldn't do the tests and just kept prescribing things to me. I took Provera, Clomid, Femera, Metformin, Progesterone, Actos-Met, etc. without any success and just felt horrible the entire time. Still he claimed that I wasn't ovulating, although he didn't do the bloodwork to see and I grew impatient and left. I have PCOS, but I've seen a dramatic shift in my cycle the past year. It's only now that I'm getting a period on my own after getting off all the medication. Infertility is one of the biggest markets in health care today because we will pay whatever it costs to get pregnant. That's probably why it isn't covered by our insurance companies.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I have been married for two yrs this month. About 7 months into our marriage I went off the pill. We were not actively trying to get pregnant, but not preventing it either. I am now 31 yrs old. The first Dr I saw who had been my OB for years just kept telling me to keep trying, I was young, but I knew something was night right when AF was so irregular and skipping months. Finally after 3 doctors I found a great one. I am not on my 4th round of Clomid and next week I will go for an ovulation tracking US and get an HCG injection to hopefully help things along. I started Clomid at 50mg and nothing happened, the 2nd month I used 100mg and it worked, but I did not get pregnant, so the 3rd month they kept me on 100mg and guess what...it did not work, no ovulation. I really thought that would be the month to FINALLY get a positive PT. So now I will finish my 150mg dose tomorrow on day 9. Day 14 will be the US and injection, maybe 4th time will be a charm. It is very hard not to get upset, this has been going on now for awhile, at the same time all our friends are getting pregnant and having babies so easy and here we sit getting disappointed every time. I enjoyed reading all the positive stories on here, they help me and keep me positive. Makes me realize I am not the only one out there. Best of luck and prayers with all you ladies!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hello ladiesI am completely stressing out. My doc just prescribed me progesterone and clomid....but rushed me out of the office with MANY unanswered questions. I have been told to start clomid at day5 of AF. When should you begin to test for ovulation???? If it doesn't work, how long before you can start round 2? Also, does anyone else have a doctor that refuses to prescribe prenatal vitamins?? He will not write the prescription until I am prego... he said to take an OTC until then, that they work just as good. Maybe I am stressing to much, but I want to maximize my chances of a healthy pregnancy (if I can conceive!). Any thoughts??

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was told today by my doctor that my body is showing signs of resistance to Clomid. If it does not work this month he will try me at a max dose of 200mg next month along with another medication often given to diabetic patients (I am not diabetic) but I guess this has shown signs of helping with ovulation. Has anyone heard of this or been told they are resistant to Clomid?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

This is my first month on Clomid and I am to keep a chart with my BBT. My doctor will use this to see if the Clomid is working or needs increased, but my chart looks nothing like the sample because my temperature is all over the place. This makes it hard to see when there is a spike in temp during ovulation. I'm curious to see what my doctor will say at my next appointment.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Oh the Clomid Crazies... I'm so glad I'm done with that. After 3 cycles on Clomid 50mg, 100mg & 150mg my doctor has switched me to Femara while waiting to get into the RE. The hot flashes and mood swings were so bad that by my last day 21 blood draw I thought the worst possible outcome would be to have ovulated but bfn. I have no side effects with the Femara and about the same results. It is a little more expensive, but totally worth it for the lack of side effects. It about $18/pills (2.5mg) plus my insurance covered it (it didn't cover the Clomid) because its primary use is as a breast cancer drug. Good luck & baby dust to you all.

My first cycle that I took it I ovulated and even started my period after, on my own. The second time no such luck, no ovulation, no period. I have PCOS and am also on Metformin. I definetly think lowering your stress level has a lot to do with it. Good Luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I am taking Clomid for the second time. The first Rx resulted in a wonderful little red-headed girl who turns 5 on St Patrick's Day! I noticed that I was very moody while taking Clomid (50 mg) in 2004, but it went away after about a month. I also started showing at 9 weeks, but I doubt that it had anything to do with the medication. I have experienced moderate nausea this time (again, 50 mg). My sister-in-law used Clomid for one cycle for her second child after losing a baby at 7 months gestation. She now has 2 healthy boys ages 7 (Clomid) and 5. My doctor insisted that I take the brand name Clomid instead of the generic. Her rationale was that in her practice, her patients reported better results with the brand name than the generic. I would suggest discussing this with your doctor if you have been taking Clomid without a positive result... Good luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hi all, My doctor put me on 50mg clomid (days 5-9). I am now at day 15 of my cycle and nothing is happening. Has anyone's doctor told them when to expect ovulation? I had no side effects (except for my vision...I had yellow spots in my vision when outdoors) and have no cramping or any type of PMS symptoms. I am kind of bummed, because I feel as if it really is NOT working. Also, if this round did not work, how long do you wait before starting the 2nd?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I have been TTC for 15 months now and have been on clomid since May 09. We have had 2 miscarriages, 1 in nov. and 1 in dec. Clomid has been terrible. I started on 50mgs and now am on 100mgs days 5-9 of my cycle. I have cramps for 3 weeks out of the month, hot flashes for 2 weeks and my mood swings have been crazy. I hope you have better luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

We have been purposely trying for about a year (April '09) and I still have not become pregnant, I am not sure what I should do. My OB says I should get on Clomid and start taking prenatals and that will help the process..... however, I don't get periods AT ALL, maybe three times a year for 3 or 4 days and then it's gone (I enjoyed this until we started to TRY)! Also, as a teenager I was on Depo and Yaz for a few years.... could this be the reason we are having such big problems conceiving? Also, does anyone have any helpful tips or suggestions. Q&A: Clomid basics?

No fan of Clomid here. After 7 cycles on the stuff, only 3 successful ovulation months, and 2 naturally starting P's - I'm glad I ditched the OB and went to a fertility specialist. The new dr put me on Femara, which while I still have some minor hot flashes, the side effects are nowhere near as severe. Femara isn't for everyone though - it's primary use is for breast cancer, and the manufacturer does not support its use in fertility treatments. We still have not had success on Femara, and are considering other options at this point.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I are trying to have our first little one. I went to the doctor and found out I'm not ovulating at all so she wants me to try Clomid. I just finished my 7 days of provera and need to start my Clomid on day 2 of my period. I'm a little confused what to count as day 2 since I'm just getting some brown spotting. Anyone else had this issue? Should I count that as my period?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I heard that the side affects of clomid were not so good. Our doctor gave us Femara. This is typically used for women with breast cancer, however it has the same effect as Clomid, causing you to ovulate. So, we are crossing our fingers.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I have been TTC for 6 months, but I have had 2 bouts of ovarian cancer and my Dr suspects PCOS so she put me on Clomid. Currently taking Provera to induce a period (skipped 2 mo, very unusual) and will start Clomid after. I am hoping that OPKs or BBT will help know when to try-never had luck with OPKs in the past. We are very hopeful, as many people get pregnant on the 1st cycle with Clomid, and 90% that get pregnant it's within the first 4 cycles. It's good to know I'm not alone. My GP diagnosed me with PCOS in 2007 b/c I was having irregular peroids and started me on BC. I got married May 2009 and stopped taking the pill then and we have been TTC ever since. I am 25, so I am finally going back to my GYNO next month. My peroids have been regular for the past year, so now I don't know if that was an accurate diagnosis or not. I'm hoping my doc will start me on clomid and see if it works! The mood swings and hot flashes are a small price to pay for the blessing of our first child!

I have PCOS and my doctor, too, started me on 50 mg of clomid last month for 5 days... after the first round, nothing happened, no egg, nothing. she said my body needs a bigger kick i guess... so now she increased my dose to 100mg of clomid and 500 mg of metformin. i have my check up next week to see if this time, i produced an egg or not, but i was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? That you are still not producing eggs, even on clomid? Q&A: Clomid basics?

FYI to anyone thinking about taking clomid. Make sure your doctor gets a progesterone level reading when you ovulate before you take the clomid. If you OVULATE then make sure your doctor doesnt prescribe you clomid. IT IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO CANT OVULATE AND LOW PROGESTERONE levels. Also make sure that she does a pap before and after you are on clomid. Also make sure she checks your thyroid levels. We knew i ovulated, we just though my progesterone levels were low, but that was with out a blood test. My doc just threw this pill at me with out any advice or going over anything. i was so excited about getting pregnant that I didnt think anything of it. Turns out I ovulate just fine, my progesterone levels are at a 36, which is EXTREMELY high. My problem is I am hypothyroidism. we also found this out AFTER i was on clomid when I got my first blood tests. I ended up going through clomid hell with out the light of the end of the tunnel because my doctor wasnt doing her job and I was too excited to be responsible for my body. So i wanted to make sure other REALLY EXCITED woman dont make the same mistake I did. For everyone who is getting on this pill and took all precautions, I wish you good luck!! I am sure the pill works with the right directions and I wish you all warm thoughts and happiness.

Hot Flashes (mostly in the am), abdominal pain and nausea around day 18-20, vaginal dryness, mood swings, heart palpatations......fun! On my 3rd round at 100mg, hoping to see that BFP before I lose my mind on this freaking Clomid! Word of advice- if you're considering Clomid, see a reproductive endocrinologist, not your Ob-Gyn. Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was just reading through some of these when my doctor called! Haha! TTC 14 months. Doctor said I was not ovulating Round one of Clomid 50 mg last month. 21 day blood work showed my prog. level 12 I had my HSG done (ouch!!) on Tuesday - tubes all clear!! :) :) So my dr just called to tell me they are upping my dose to 100 mg For those strugging: Girls, I know it is so hard. The grief of not being pregnant month after month is almost too much to bear sometimes. While I know it could be so much worse, it is still one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through. Hang in there! God's timeing is better than our own. Trust Him. This is easier said than done, believe me, I know! But he has a purpsose for my life and for this struggle and I know my faith is being strengthened for His glory. Remember: God knows all of our babies before they are even formed! how cool is that!! That is what gives me the most comfort through all this. "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you." Jeremiah 1:5 "My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. " Psalm 139:15-16

I've seen several REs and finally with an MD that is amazing. I start clomid on Friday, and will take until Tuesday (days 5-9), was told to wait a day or two, then have sex every other day. I will be going in for an appointment for bloodwork and ultrasound on the 14th. I'm so Type A, that I feel like I'm obsessing over everything, researching and reading, and trying to find out what the best way to maximize these chances would be. Q&A: Clomid basics?

We have been TTC for almost 18 months now without a BFP yet. I have been taking Clomid since May. First at 50 mg, when that didn't work, 100 mg for 2 months, and now 150mg for the last 2 months. We're hoping that this month is successful again and hopefully get that BFP!!! I've had the progesterone tests each month as well and the results have been all over the board. Finally last month was a good result, so hopefully this dose of Clomid does the trick. The hardest part is hearing so many other family members and friends announce they're pregnant. As excited as I am for them, it gets discouraging. It's nice to know we aren't the only couple in this frustrating stage. I wish you all good luck that Clomid does the trick! Q&A: Clomid basics?

I'm 38, TTC for last 15 months, but I had no periods for a year! I thought I was in early menopause, but my FSH level was 3; turns out the problem is that I'm hypothyroid and have high prolactin levels which was keeping me from ovulating. Everything else is fine; never had fibroids or endometriosis; I had a dye test - the tubes are fine. DH had a test - his numbers are fine. So the doc put me on synthroid for the low TSH, cabergoline for the high prolactin and 50 mg of Clomid three months ago (after a round of Provera to bring on a period). No ovulation on 50 mg, so I got bumped up to 100mg. Not pregnant last month, but I did O! First time in 14 months! Tried 100 mg again this month, and did O; just waiting to take a HPT at the end of the week. The side effects however, are bad. I'm snappish, I cry at the drop of a hat, I've been getting bad headaches, am bloated beyond belief, although I've been really careful with my diet, and I've had a bit of insomnia. So yes, there are side effects, they are real, and they are not fun. If my HPT is positive on Friday, it'll all be worth it though. :-) If not, I'm ready to take a break from the Clomid and try Fertilaid, which has vitex, aka chaste tree berry, which is supposed to help regulate your hormones, without the bad side effects. I'm doing everything else: no caffeine, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, drinking tea and eating bee pollen, taking prenatals but cut out Advil, antihistamines & allergy meds... Wish me luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

spineoga: I'm 26 and have been struggling with Hypothyroid. We are trying to get my levels straight. I go in on the 23rd for blood tests. last time they were high. Just remember it takes quite a few months to get thyroid levels right. Don't get to discouraged!! We've not not been trying for 3 years but my husband and I have been actually TRYING for about 4 months now. Thyroid levels have a lot to do with fertility. Make sure you wait at least 3-4 hours in between you prenatle and synthroid. If you don't your synthroid won't work leaving you where you started. I'm going for tests soon like I said to an endocrinologist one of the best on the East Coast, I'm hoping he will prescribe me clomid and if not pregnant by the first of the year I'm shipping the hubby off for test too!! LOL!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

After 1,5yrs of TTC without success and 3 Docs later we finally figured out that I have PCOS. My doctor put me on Metformin to bring my hormone household back on track. It took about 5 months for me to finally start my period on my own but I still didnt see no ovulation on my BBT Chart. So in January 2007 I started on 50mg Clomid Day 3-7. 1st cycle failed, at the 2nd cycle we finally seen ovulation occured and on my 3rd cycle I conceived. I was never followed up by ultrasound during the cycles to see how many eggs I produced. Well I joked around on my 1st OB visit to check for 2 heartbeats but the OB didnt take me serious so my twin pregnancy went unnotice until 20wks. Quite the shock since it was only a 10% Chance of concieving muliples. :) Now my Boys are 3 yrs old and I soooooooo want have another baby. Just one though. I been taking Metformin for almost a year now. My cycles are still kinda whack. Thats frustrating. I so wanna avoid Clomid this time around because of the fear of having twins again or even more but I might just have to cave in. Good luck everybody!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Clomid should not be used for more than 6 cycles. And that's not just in consecutive months, that's period. There is an increased risk of ovarian cancer in women who use Clomid long term (over the recommened 6 months). It's just something to talk to your doctor about when considering Clomid.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I'm new to the site and trying to research about Chlomid on Provera. I was diagnosed 10 years ago with PCOS but only because I wasn't getting a period and I had a high progestrone level when tested. I was put on birth control to get regular periods and to "keep me fertile" as the doc put it. I went off birth control a year ago when I got married and we have been trying to conceive. I found out I have Hypothyroidism, so am now taking synthroid to correct that. It has been corrected, all subsequent tests are in the normal range. I still was not receiving a period naturally even with thyroid levels being good, so the fertility specialist put me on provera and ran more blood work. Everything looks normal except that I have very young eggs, which showed I am not ovulating. So I was put on Chlomid to mature the eggs, I am on day 15 and after 2 ultra sounds, I still haven't produced a follicle. They want me to come in for one more ultrasound on day 19 to see if I had produced a follicle before they up my dose of Chlomid. They said that women who don't receive periods normally can take longer to produce a follicle. If the ultra sound shows that I havent produced they will increase my dose of Chlomid for next cycle. I do get side effects from chlomid and worried an increase may make it worse. I am having a difficult time understanding how everything can be right, but they don't know why I am not ovulating.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I have regular periods, ovulate regularly, have never been on BC, my DH and I have been TTC for 15 months. We have had basic testing, all came out fine. My MD started me on clomid, I am on my 3rd month and bumped me up to 150mg for 5 days. Since I was regular before and ovulate, will this still work for us??

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hi all, My husband and I have been TTC for the past two years and I finally just started Clomid. I'm on day 25 and am extremely nauseous for the past week and a half. Anyone else have that side effect from Clomid? I'm hoping it means I'm pregnant, but after two years, I'm still a little cautious to get my hopes up....

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hey there, I will be starting clomid this next cycle (day 3-7). I do not ovulate on my own for no reasons (I am 25). I will be starting on 50 mg. We will also be doing IUI (as my Dr says clomid makes it harder for swimmers to get through). Does anyone know if IUI will increase my chances or will they still be about 15-20% each cycle?

kimbo428 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Kimbo: This is what I've read re: clomid and IUI: IUI can help on Clomid cycles where cervical mucus is a problem, and IUI increases the chance of success on injectable cycles no matter what the sperm count. It does make sense to try IUI if you can and haven't had success with intercourse. It is important to note that with intercourse, only the best and strongest sperm make it through the cervical mucus and up into the uterus and fallopian tubes. With IUI, more sperm will be available for fertilization Hope this helps!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I am 35 years old and got married in July. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 14 years old. Since then I had not had a cycle without medication either BCP or provera. I just finished my first cycle of 100mg of clomid for 7 days and go in for blood tests today. The Dr. said everyone is different and it is a matter of trial and error to find what works for me. I have had a few side effects but know it will be well worth it if it helps me ovulate and get pregnant. I am trying not to loose hope but at times it gets very frustrating! Good luck to all!!!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was just diagnosed with PCOS in late November. TTC since May, never had problems with AF until I stopped taking BC. Since then my cycles have been all over the board! Just went through a cycle of Provera and thankfully it worked quickly; I start taking Clomid this week and I'm really hoping it works. It would be fabulous to get preggers right away, but I'll keep my hopes in check...

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I finished my first round of Clomid and should be ovulating today. My DR prescribed me clomid even though it appears that I ovulate monthly. We have been TTC for over a year with no luck. I heard that Clomid has very low chances for multiples but it would be kind of neat to have twins. Cross your fingers!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My DH and I have been trying for 3 years. I went through my first round of Clomid last month. I had the mood swings, but no how flashes. I still did not ovulate on my own so my dr gave me a shot of HCG (HCG was worse than Clomid, I could hardly walk for two days because it hurt so bad. I had two shots, one in each hip), which made me ovulate. I had all of symptoms of everything was working until day 11, my temp dropped. Luckily my dr did a blood test and confirmed what I was thinking, my progesterone levels were too low to sustain a pregnancy. I was also having awful pains in my left ovary. My dr did an ultra sounds and found that the spot where I ovulated was bleeding back in to my ovary. So we have to wait a month before the 2nd round of Clomid. However, I have been keeping track of everything and it looks like I am going to ovulate on my own this month. I got a peak day sign on my fertility monitor. I am waiting for the doctor to tell me when I need the progesterone shot. Keeping me fingers crossed, I would rather get pregnant this way than to go back on Clomid and HCG shots.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Ok, so I just found out that I have PCOS after TTC for a year. The doc recommened I start Clomid after I get my period, which she gave me medicine to aid in that. I am nervous about the drung, but more concerned after reading that other ppl with PCOS have had NO sucess with it. Any thoughts?

TReese12 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

TReese12: I just started Clomid, I have had PCOS (for about a decade now) and have been trying to conceive for 2 years. My doctor told me the side effects of clomid, but for the most part it was safe and effective (I have had several friends conceive healthy normal babies on clomid, none having multiples). The risks he told me about: Vision issues, possible vision loss if you continue on medication even after warning signs. Multiple babies - twins 7% chance Multiple babies - triplets or more 1% chance Single baby - 93% chance Vaginal dryness - common (which wasn't going to effect me since we'd do an IUI) Possibly modiness I've been on the pill for 5 days now and No side effects at all. I'm at 50mg right now though. They are going to check my progesterone levels around day 21 and if they are good, then we'll do an IUI the next month. If not, then they'll up it to 100mg and test progesterone again. You never know how you're gonna do on it unless you try. And I wouldn't be too concerned about multiples.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I posted earlier about being on Clomid late December. I was so excited because the low dose worked just fine and I ovulated. Then the hurdle of DH having low count, so they recommended AI. my hopes were low due to statistics showing a very small percentage of women conceiving in one round of AI. I waited my two weeks and got a negative PT. I was ready to move on to the higher dose of Clomid but Dr. said wait another week and test. I was bummed because I figured why? it's negative, two tests within 5 days said negative....after another week wait I took another PT and to my shock and losing speech and breath, a POSITIVE!!! YAY!! So keep your hopes up and if you get a negative at first, wait a little longer, you might get your wish!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Well, I went to the doctor today because I have not had a regular period since August. I took Provera back in November to have a period, and I did, but I have not had one since. My husband and I have not really been TTC--as my OBGYN put it, we have been playing the "russian roulette" game of TTC. But this year we decided that we wanted to have a baby. I have been taking birth control for about three years now, and I stopped last July. But as I mentioned earlier, the last regular period I had was back in August. The game plan is the following: Wait 2 weeks, take a PT to see if I'm prego. If not, then I will take the Provera, have a period, then have a PAP done, and then, if it's still a no-go, then I start the Clomid. She did mention the hot flashes and the cramping, so I'm hoping those are minimal. We shall see. It's the Year of the Baby, after all. Good luck to all of you!!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hi ladies! MY husband and I TTC for almost a year with no luck. I stopped getting a period for several months and my doc prescribed our first and only round of Clomid 50mg. We took it as directed, and the side effects were pretty much what you are all describing-SERIOUS hot flashes and mood swings. But I knew that if it worked it would all be worth it. I went in for my day 21 progesterone draw, and a few days later my doc called and said my levels were 3 and that I didn't ovulate. She suggested I wait until the end of the week and start the provera, and if I felt the need, to take a HPT.I was SOO upset becuase I just KNEW that I had ovulated, and was TOTALLY surprised when they told me I didn't. Call it a gut feeling, but i waited almost another week after deciding that I didn't want to put myself through the dissapointment of another unsucccessful cycle, and took a HPT. Well to my surprise it was POS!! I even went to buy 3 more because I didn't believe it. I am now 17 weeks with my baby boy. My only advice is to TRUST your gut and listen to your body. Sending lots of baby dust to you all =)

I am on round two of clomid, they increased my dose to 100mg after the last month when the folicles didn't mature fast enough. I have been one of the lucky ones that have had no side effects, to be honest I think it actually improved my mood but we will see now that the dose has been increased.. We have been trying for 1 year now and have limited insurance coverage to cover fertility treatment so I am crossing my fingers that this works for me! Hopefully round 2 is more sucessful.. Congrats mommydee813, I hope to have as much luck with my clomid as you did :-)

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was on Clomid for 6months and never got pregnant. We took a few months off and now are seeing a fertility specialist. I am back on it but I am doing the IUI with it. The Dr. said that your chances are better if you do it with the IUI because Clomid can cause your fluid to kill the sperm and it puts the sperm where it needs to be. I am hoping that it works and friend of mine is doing the same thing and it worked for her Also, have you had your tubes checked, or hormone levels or your thyroid levels checked?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

We have been TTC since I went off the pill in March 2010. I've gone through some of the basic tests like thyroid levels, tubes checked and DH's semen analysis and everything has come back normal. My doc has forced a period twice by using Progesterone and have come to the conclusion that I don't ovulate. Recently took Progesterone (to force period) followed by 50mg of Clomid from days 3-8. On day 22 I went in for the blood work and found that I still did not ovulate. Pregnancy test was BFN, no period either. Next step is more Progesterone followed by 100mg of Clomid days 3-8. I'm wondering if anyone else has had an experience similar to mine and if there was any success. Feeling like I'm getting nowhere fast.

We've been trying since August of 2010 and this year I finally did the Provera to induce a period and hoped I would ovulate on my own as a result. I didn't and so did my first round of Clomid last month, which was also unsuccessful. I'm guessing my doctor will put me on another round of Clomid because from what I've read on here and other sites, it can take a few cycles to be effective. I am also going to start Clomid. My doctor prescribed provera to stimulate my period and then 50mg clomid to ovulate. I also have to do the blood test on CD 21 to see if I ovulated. My doctor also recommended using OPT starting on CD 12. I saw that some women's husbands were checked-out prior to starting clomid... my doc didnt do this. I am wondering if DH should get checked out though. Clomid seems like a waste if he is shootin blanks.

Hi everyone! After reading all these posts I feel much better! It seems that all of us who have tried or are taking Clomid has had some symptoms. I'm going to be starting my second round of 50mg and I have to say I feel that the first round was working even though I had not gotten pregnant. I'm also trying acupuncture to help. I'm hoping this month works because my hubby and I are getting to the point where we are tired. If this doesn't work we only have one more month to go. Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hello! I needed clomid to get pregnant with my son, who is now 16 months. We are on clomid again, both times it took us til the 3rd cycle with clomid to get pregnant. It was the 100mg dose that made me ovulate. I took clomid on days 3-8, then used ClearBlue Fertility Monitor to tell me if I ovulated and when, then 7 days after ovulation I would go in and get a blood test to check my progesterone, which tells them if the dosage actually worked and you actually ovulated. This last time my progesterone was over 40, and the doctor told me that is a sign that I could be pregnant...and sure enough, we are!! Clomid did give me VERY bad mood swings, but it was all worth it!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Clomid is different for everyone. Some people get pregnant their first try, while some never get pregnant. I have taken Clomid over 4 years for the consecutive months allowed. It only worked once, which resulted in a miscarriage. I tried it 3 times after that and it did not work either time. I will be moving on to other meds now. The cost will go up, but for a bundle or bundles of joy, it makes all the difference. Just a little encouragement. I've heard that relaxation and staying stress free helps out alot. If you do not have any medical issues...most likely, trying alot of different "LITTLE" things can help you. Good Luck to all!!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I wrote something on here back in August 2010, still TTC with no luck. My husband and I have switched to an Endocryn Fertility doctor and have be with her since December 2010. Turns out that I dont have a thyroid problem, my hormone levels were thrown out of whack due to the clomid. We have done 3 cycles of IUI's and have also done an out patient surgery to go and check to make sure there are no growths burns, scarring or bad tissue and she said i am text book perfect minus the fact that their is no baby. My husband had good sperm count but slightly under the lever motility. We decided that she is going to try me on an agressive round of Clomid and join that with an IUI. She knows I ovulate like clock work so she is trying to get multiple folicles to grow and hopfully a baby or two. If you are having trouble with your OBGYN, then look for a fertility doctor. They might cost more, but Id rather pay a little more then wonder what the hell my doc is doing to me. That was a night mare. A fertility doc will explain everything and do all the right testing before they treat you with anything (even if the wait is long and hard). hope this helps.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I am sooo excited to be prego! My hubby and I tried for 1 year and ten months. We finally became prego after 2nd round of clomid 50 mg on days 2-6 with 2nd IUI:)! We had unexplained infertility so yes it can help women ovulate regularly to get pregnant as well as people who have issues with ovulation. My first attempt with chlomid doc. noticed my lining wasn't thickening up as fast and eggs weren't maturing as fast. I ovulated a week late and did IUI and it didn't work. Next month I had a dif. doc. and she put me on 50 mg chlomid for days 2-6 but this time she also had me do injections on days 8,10 and 11. The injections were to help my lining as the chlomid was thinning it and also to help mature my eggs. I had the hcg shot on the sat.(which brings on ovulation) at midnight and on the Monday which was my day 14 we did the IUI at around 37 hrs after the injection. The moring of day 12 after the iui I did an early pregnancy test and got a positive result:)! My hubby and I are very excited. Can't wait until scan to see if it is one or more than one as I had 3 mature eggs when they did the IUI so there is a small chance of triplets. I cannot stress enough to women taking this drug to make sure they only take it under a doctors supervision with scans as it does thin some women's lining so egg won't implant in uterus and also to make sure you do not have more than 2 or 3 eggs as you could end up having quads or more.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 2 1/2 years. I am 28 and he is 31. We just started the infertility testing in February 2011 and everything came out normal. His sperm count/motility, etc. is excellent, my tubes are open (confirmed by HSG), I ovulate on my own (confirmed through ultrasound and bloodwork), my uterus lining looks good (confirmed through HSG and ultrasound), I don't have polyps on my uterus (had an SHG to confirm), etc., etc. In other words, we are in the "unexplained infertility" category. The doc put me on 50 mg of Clomid last month and it actually did reverse on my body (made my follicles smaller). I couldn't believe it! This month, she put me on 100 mg of Clomid. On day 14, I had an ultrasound and she found two follicles - 14 mm and 19 mm. Being that the 19 mm is considered "healthy", she gave me a trigger shot to ovulate within the following 36 hours. I was very leary of taking Clomid being that I already ovulate on my own; however, so far it hasn't been that bad. Just hot flashes for the most part. Praying that it works for us...this is getting old:( Thanks for sharing your stories - they are very encouraging/informative.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I just went to the gyno last week. We have been TTC for 8 months. The Dr. put me on Clomid ( 50mg) for 2 months. I am a little confused on when to start.... when I started spotting or when I had the actual flow? If anybody has answers please share. I am nervous but very ready to have a baby! She said they would test my husband after 2 rounds of Clomid then start testing me. If you have any advice or suggestions please let me know. This is my first time for everything!

laurabear83 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

LauraBear83 - my understanding is that your period is not considered as started until you have the actual flow. Did your doc tell you when to start taking it? Sometimes they have you start on Day 3 and other times it's Day 5, depending on what your doc recommends. If you have any questions, get back on the phone and ask your doc - that's what you're paying them for. If they don't want to answer your questions, then get a new doc. Make sure you have their plan for you in writing, because it's easy to forget when you have so much to do (tests, temp, taking the pills, having sex, etc.). I am a little confused as to why they wouldn't test both of you before giving you any Clomid, but maybe your docs know something that I don't. In other words, if your husband has problems, then Clomid isn't going to help you guys. Also, if your fallopian tubes are blocked, etc., Clomid is not going to help you. Also, are they monitoring you on Clomid (I.e., through ultrasound). Like CarolineCars said, Clomid can cause multiple eggs to develop, so being monitored while on it, although it is more expensive and time consuming, is a safer way to go. Plus, ultrasounds tell you if the Clomid is working (i.e., how many eggs are developing and how big they are). Ultrasounds will also show how thick your uterine lining is getting before ovulation, which is important too. If you don't get much help from your OBGYN, then go to an actual infertility doc. Hope this helps and good luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

UPDATE: I posted something on here May 19th 2011. Started 1st round of clomid 100mg. (doc is giving higher dosage due to me already ovulating, just wanted to increase chances) Just did day 10 ultra sound and saw that we have 3 good size folicles growing!! Exciting. I didnt expect to see them there, i havent really cramped like they said I should so seeing 3 was a nice surprise. I have been informed that some of the folicles will disappear or stay and they wont know until day 14 which is next cycle and hopefully ovulation. The only real side effect that I'm getting is the hot flashes. Mood swings are pretty mild. all three folicles were around 10-11mm which is really good for a day 10. They want them to be at least 18 for ovulation. I'm trying to keep up with this so that people can see the follow ups. I know thats one thing I look for. Its nice to see that others do this and to see it work. Its different when my completely fertile doc of 4 children says it works... she doesnt know the feeling just sees the patients in her office. Hope this is helping everyone and good luck to all.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I started Chlomid on month 9 of trying. After lots of blood work, my husband being checked, the HSG (YUCK) and still no luck. I am 31 and healthy. I have been off the pill for 2 years. I have regualr periods and no "concerns" but still no baby. The Clomid, 50mg did make me ovulate and the side effects were mild; some mild hot flashes, mild headache, and some ovulation pain. I am seeing an RE next month who is taking me off the Chlomid and doing a post coital (whatever that is) to see what's going on... I feel very frusterated because there are no obvious answers. I hear of some women who have unexplained infertility and that scares me the most because there is no "fix" for that.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

A couple things to keep in mind regarding clomid that I learned after being on it for a while.... 1. If you get into the higher dose range (150+) it can cause your lining to become thin and becomes counter productive. 2. It is not recommended to take clomid for more that 12 cycles (throughout a lifetime). I am not a medical professional but have been through many years and methods of trying to have our 2nd. This is information I learned along the way (from well respected drs). On a positive note - The 1st time I took clomid I got pregnant with my daughter (who is almost 5 yrs old). Got preggo a 2nd time after 4 months on clomid but miscarried. It's a great option .... just don't take high doses or for too many cycles.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Just finished my first round of Chlomid, last month. Not bad side effects at all..just HOT FLASHES! Pretty minimal for the end result. Sadly, the tests came back negative and I am in my second month of Chlomid (100 mg-days 3-7) and Estadiol (days 7-11) to beef up my lining. Hoping this time works for us!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was prescribed Clomid 50 mg after being on Metformin 1500 mg daily for 8 months. I have mild PCOS and my husband and I have been TTC since Feb. 2010. My OB put me on Clomid in May 2011 and I was pregnant off the first round. Just beware. The excitement of pregnancy overwhelmed me and I was so happy. But I lost the pregnancy last week at 6 weeks. Clomid worked great for FINALLY getting me pregnant. For those of you who have PCOS that is only half the battle. Miscarriage is especially high among us. I even continuued taking my Metformin as my OB told me to. It's a long road to pregnancy, but sometimes just as long a road to childbirth.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Is there anything you can do for Hot Flashes..other than taking a lot of cold showers?

kfschaaf |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

i'm on my 3rd round of Clomid and hoping that it works. This time we're also going to use Prometrium along with it. The hot flashes are the worst part about Clomid. Otherwise I had not other symptoms. Nothing you can really do for the hot flashes unfortunately. PCOS definitely makes this whole process challenging. It's almost like you can't let yourself get too excited because of how many times you've been let down before with negative tests. Only thing to do is stay strong and think positive. Good luck everyone!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

we've been ttc for about a year now. I just had my first round of clomid at 50 mg. I dont ovulate monthly because of PCOS. I ovulated this month with clomid and i took a pregnancy test a week after ovulation and it was negative. Could it be too early to do the test, is there a chance i could still be pregnant?

babydust14 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Babydust, yes it is too early to test. I got pregnant on the 2nd round of Clomid (50 mg).The first time I got the first faint BFP was after 13-14 days of ovulation,I remember testing about about 3 days before and it was negative. I had anovulation/PCOS before, but I was also on Metformin at the same time.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was on Clomid back in January, 50 mg, and got pregnant right away. The dr told me to wait two weeks after ovulation to take a test and I did and it was negative, so she said wait another week. it was hard but I took another test and it was positive! boy was I surprised! Unfortunately I was ectopic at 8 weeks, but now we are ready to try again, so back on Clomid we go. Obviously it worked once, and I'm hoping to have better results!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I just started my first round of Clomid on July 12th. I am anxious to see if just 50mg works for me. All my blood work showed that I didn't have PCOS, just an ovulation disorder. I have had hot flashes and I have been dizzy off and on since I started the med. Im hoping it works..... praying all the time.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I had my Mirena IUD removed on May 2nd in hopes of having an fast and easy conception and pregnancy. Unfortunately, my body has other plans. I have been using the Clear Blue Easy Digital Ovulation Test and Answer Daily Ovulation Test every single day (one in the AM and one in the PM) and have never seen a positive result - I'm not ovulating at all. After having 2 very short cycles (24 days and 23 days) without ovulation, my doctor prescribed Clomid 50mg for CD 5-9 to "induce" ovulation; he also recommended DH and I have intercourse every other day. I started the Clomid on July 11th, have been having intercourse every other day, dealing with Clomid's side effects (headache, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, bloated tummy, dizziness, acne breakouts, etc.) and I still haven't ovulated. I had an ultrasound on CD 16 and found out I have large bilateral ovarian cysts, but my doctor was hopeful that one would rupture soon and I would ovulate. My doctor also prescribed Clomid 100mg for next month because 50mg didn't help induce ovulation. Since today is CD 22, I am just waiting for AF to come so I can start Clomid 100mg on CD 3-7. Has anyone else had their dosage increased after just one month on 50mg??

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Im on my 2nd cycle of clomid (100mg). My first month was way worse then this month. But i was also taking progesterone with clomid to actually get my period and then regulate me. I had horrible hot flashes and mood swings. In fact when the dr asked me about my side effects i said: "Im a little concerned, you tell me my husband and i should have more sex. Yet, i dont see how that is possible when i want to claw his eyes out?" Just finished my 2nd round of meds this past weekend. So far so good. Im a tad moody but nothing compared to last month. Clomid did work for me and my left side only PCOS last month i did ovulate which was step one for us. No eggs, no baby. But somehow we missing my ovulation day so this month I have been doing better with sex every other day.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My husband and I have been ttc since about May '10 and today I started my 3rd cycle of clomid(50mg). After about a year of ttc we seen the Dr. and after blood work my level was a 6 so he, prescribed the clomid. After the first month it did increase my progesterone to a 18 so he kept me the same for month two and again it boosted to 21, so he left it at 50 mg for this month. It seems like everyone I talk to always has their dosage increased if they don't become pregnant, but my Dr. did not. Also, there were no tests conducted before I started ont he clomid and again talking to others seems like they go through a lot of procedures before they started the meds. I'm just wondering if anyone has had these same experiences. My husband has never been tested and the Dr. says if I'm not pregnant this month we will test him, but I feel like maybe he should have already been tested! Since my Dr. is only going to have me take the clomid 3 cycles I ffeel this month is my last chance. :( As far as the side effects I didnt feel anything the first month, but last month I did feel a bit more moody/emotional and TIRED...after day 1 of clomid tooday I was very emotional already and very tired too..anyone else been very tired on this??

Hey Rubi- I just finished provera on Sunday, and Monday afternoon I was spotting, light af on Tuesday with terrible cramps! My doctor said you usually bleed anywhere from day 2-day 7 after taking the last pill. Tomorrow is day 5 and I am starting my first round of clomid (50mg). Fingers crossed!

Cass925 |

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Also, I should mention, I temp every morning and chart on fertilityfriend.com. I find it to be really helpful as I only get af about 3 times a year. Definitely look into the information on charting because it is very informative- a drop and then spike in temps signifies ovulation. Just be sure to take your temp the same time everyday and before getting out of bed and moving around! I set my alarm, wake up- roll over (thermometer is on the night stand) and take my temp. If you become pregnant your temperature will remain high after ovulation. Check out fertility friend because they have "lessons" on how it all works!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hello all!! DH and I have been trying for about 2 years on our own. I don't have a period normally, but have had 2 without provera. Obviously, our chances of conceiving on our own is pretty low. No diagnosis on why I don't get a period (not PCOS or hypothyroid). Anyways, took 50 mg of Clomid last month, and Oh boy, the side effects. Headaches, mood swings, abdominal pain/bloating. Started a period on day 24 (on my own, yay), unfortunately. However, am doing it again this month because we want a family! Still on 50mg this month again, and have had some headaches already. Trying to stay positive, but that's hard for me on this medicine I think....But it will work this time!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hi Dara, I also do not have PCOS and my thyroid levels were also fine. My estradiol levels are low and the doctor thinks that it is because I am underweight which can limit ovulation. Best of luck for you and your DH, I hope you do not feel to terrible this time around!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Hi All! My Husband and I have been TTC for over a year. We have been married going on three. We finally had the financial means and decided it was time to consult with a fertility specialist! The doctor I consult was amazing! In the past, I had gotten the generic "lose 30 pounds, then you'll get pregnant on your own", well....it's not that simple for all women. After my appt, my OB-GYN did a pap smear and blood work. All came back normal (thyroid, etc), except my progesterone levels were extremely low at 3.8. I start Clomid 50mg tomorrow (11.3.11) on days 5-9, then I have to go in for more blood tests to check my hormone levels to see if I ovulated, I am so nervous! It is such a helpless feeling when you've tried so hard and done everything within your power to concieve with no luck, I am praying for good results! It is such a blessing to be able to communicate with others' who are in my position and understand the difficulties I am going through right now. I wish all the ladies in this forum good luck!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

March of this year I went to the doctor because after going off birth control for hormonal reasons I wasn't having a cycle. My doctor gave me provera to help. At the time me and my husband were in no hurry to get pregnant but at the appointment and several months of not having my cycle on my own i got worried. Me and my husband in July stopped preventing. Last month I went in for blood work to see if i'm ovulating on my own. No such luck. My doctor recommended clomid. I'm ready to start it now, my husband said he is scared because clomid is a fast track to getting pregnant. He really thinks it will happen on cycle 1. We had agreed to wait til next year but after reading how many women have to do multiple cycles, i'm scared to wait. What if it doesn't work after 6 cycles and then i have to take a break. Any advice would be appreciated. I feel so blessed that we've had it easy compared to most. It breaks my heart to read how hard this has been for you girls. Its nice to know I'm not alone.

I just finished my first round of Clomid days 1-5. I have lean PCOS and O on my own, but very late in my cycle. The Clomid worked wonders and caused me to have 5 mature eggs so my Dr. refused to do the IUI procedure as I would most likely end up with 3 or 4 babies she said. It was so disheartening and I am so impatient. I just want it and I want it now! 1 month feels like an eternity and I feel like unless you are going through it or have gone through it, no one really understands! I just needed to vent this out. Q&A: Clomid basics?

I am on my 4th round of Clomid and on CD20. The first two rounds I took on CD3-7 and ovulated on CD18. The third cycle I took CD2-6 and still ovulated late on CD16. So this last cycle I took it on CD1-5 and ovulated on CD14. My SO and I BD every day, we just can't help ourselves... I'm pretty bloated, I was having some cramping earlier in the week (implantation?)... Other side effect of the drug include hot flashes, tender breasts and mood swings. The side effects make it hard to distinguish between what might be early pregnancy signs, or just side effects. If it didn't work this time, I'm not trying another round of Clomid. It's kind of like having false hope. I'm going to go on vacation for TTC and see if it just happens on its own... Though that's unlikely.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I'm 23 and don't ovulate on my own. My husband and I didn't prevent pregnancy for a year, and I usually had cycles that were at least 50 days without any ovulation or pregnancy. I'm now on my second round of 50mg clomid. I was thrilled that I ovulated the first month but had terrible side effects. After ovulation, I had sharp back and abdominal pains that about took my breath away, as well as, nausea, ovarian aches, and bloating. The doctor said that was normal...? This month, I think I ovulated two days ago (very strong test line on ov test) and had cramping the next day, but none of the side effects like last month. I'm hoping those were just fun times reserved for the first month. :) We're praying God gives us a little miracle baby!

Clomid doesnt work for everyone, but it is worth trying. I did have hot flashes at 100mg, but I also got pregnant. It worked for me the first time...after a still birth at 6 months (not due to clomid), we are back at it and are using clomid again! Clomid is a miracle drug!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Have been TTC for 98the months now went to obgyn at 6 months. They immediately tested my husband and me. My husband is fine but my thyroid levels were elevated so they put me on Levothyroxine. My progesterone levels were also low under 9. They put me on cloimed 50mg first month 5-9 was not successful. This month they tried cloimed longer day 3-12 still waiting to see levels this month. They also told me to take muscnix 2 times a day on day 10-20? Anyone else heard of this?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Clomid is used in women with ovulation problems. These problems often become a topic for some medical research or a students coursework and http://www.effectivepapers.com gives some quotes about it.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

An endocrinologist thought that I had PCOS several years ago but never gave me a 100% diagnosis. I went of BC two years ago and had crazy cycles for a long time. I lost a lot of weight (that I gained b/c of the PCOS it's now been decided) and my cycles got pretty regular. I got married in September and we started TTC in March and my periods stopped. I had my annual exam then anyway so the doctor ran some tests, gave me Provera to start my cycle and scheduled an 8 week FU. That was Friday and I was 5 weeks late again. BC of my FSH and LV ratio she decided that I have borderline PCOS and has decided to start me on Clomid. I'm on my 3rd day of Provera to start my cycle (fingers crossed for tomorrow) and then take the Clomid days 5-9. I'm nervous about the side effects but terrified it won't work. Everyone is telling me it's all going to work out, but that's probably the hardest thing to hear. Love hearing all of the positive stories. Thanks for sharing!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I had my first dose of clomid last month (50 mg) and no side effects...thankfully. My progesterone rose from 9.6 to 30.6 so that's good news, but not pregnant this month. I hope the next month it works because all of these is too much to deal with. Wish me good luck on the next cycle and I hope that it works for you guys.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I'm 34, and my husband and I were married two and a half years ago. Been TTC ever since with no luck. We found out that my left tube is completely blocked (ectopic pregnancy while we were still dating) after my "infertility work-up". Hubby's SA was fine. My Dr suggested Clomid and after reading a bunch of stuff online, as well as the posts here, I think I might give it a try. This may sound awful, but I'm actually really nervous about having children...but I also know in my heart that if I don't at least try, I will absolutely regret it for the rest of my life...

clomid-basics

My story starts 14 months ago when my husband and i began ttc. Both my husband and i are 26 and healthy weight but after 5 months and only two periods i know something was wrong and went to my obgyn. He put me on clomid 50mg right away with meds to start my period. On day 21 my blood test proved that i still did not ovulate so we went to 100mg. Happily that month i did ovulate but did not conceive. My husband did a seamen analysis which was normal after 2 more rounds at 100mg with no luck my obgyn prescribed me 100mg for an additional 2 days day 3 through 9 with ultrasound monitoring a trigger shot of hcg and iui. After 3 rounds of that we were still not pregnant and did not know why we had infertility. Next we went to an ivf specialist who diagnosed me with pcos and offered a mini embryo transfer which to my surprise was only 5000 dollars. We used clomid 150mg and has two embryos to transfer i also did acupuncture and today i am trilled to say that we are 4and a half weeks pregnant!!! Never give up hope god does create miracles!!! Good luck to you all!!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

My Husband and I started TTC 3 years ago and six months ago went to see a fertility specialist. We have both been checked out and my husband is fine but I have PCOS, hypothyroidism, and high levels of Prolactin. I started on Synthroid to treat hypothyroidism and those levels are now normal (yeah!!). Our next appointment is at the end of October and I am hoping to get a prescription for Clomid and to start the process to get me ovulating! It is nice to read all the positive stories as we are entering this next chapter. I have my fingers crossed we are hoping for a miracle!!

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I just finished my second round of Clomid at 100mg. My first round was at 50mg and I got major hot flashes. I had some hot flashes with my second round but not nearly as bad. Although it has not been successful I am hopeful. I have also been tracking my temperature and with my first round there was not any sign of me ovulating but with my second round I did show signs of ovulation. I do suggest it if you, your partner and doctor think it is the right thing for you. I am looking forward to start my third round and I am hopeful it will work. Good luck to anyone who takes this route in trying to conceive.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Ah, it has been a roller coaster for me on Clomid. Took it in October, 50mg, then developed a cyst/follicle 30mm...Doc took my off Clomid for one month, then on again next month...same thing again. So basically I hve been on and off each month. If you take it I would make sure you are monitored, ultrasounds at doc to make sure you don't have the issues I had. This is a 'on' month and I am hoping it works this time! As far as side effects, I feel like I have good energy and no mood swings but constipation, which sucks but worth it if is works out! Best of luck...

clomid-basics

I just found out I have PCOS. I am 23 yrs old and not overweight. I have about 3 AF a yr and do not ovulate on my own. My dr has recommended I take Clomid bc my husband and I are wanting a baby. Before I start the process I would like to hear some stories (hopefully success stories) about Clomid and side affects, miscarriages, how many cycles did you need to take before you got the BFP? Is there anyone in a similar situation? I would love to have someone to relate to.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

my husband and i have been TTC since Decemeber of 2011 and have no luck on our own. I saw my OB and she ordered a progesterone test. I was able to see my results online but I haven't talked to the dr's office yet. My levels were at 6.7. She had told me if they were low she would be giving me Clomid. Just curious if my levels would be concidered low? They did the test on cycle day 25 also. Would that make a difference?

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I was diagnosed a couple of months with PCOS and have been going through a process before starting clomid. I have eggs but my menstrual cycles are irregular. I read all diff things on clomid and one of my biggest fears is gaining weight. My Dr. said due to my condition it would do the opposite to me. Has anyone experienced weight gain or loss of weight? Right now I am watching everything I eat so it doesn't lead to gaining...

Q&A: Clomid basics?

So I am now on my second dose of 100mg of Clomid CD 3-5! I def had almost or every side effect you can possibly have on this med... Nauseous, headaches, vomiting, cramps, hot sweats (at night) & the worst mood swings ever! But I'm trying to be super positive about everything bc we really, really want a baby! I know the Clomid is working bc when I go to my gyno everything is perfect. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will be it & I am PG. I'm due for my period in like a week & 1/2 so the wait is furustrating. Also does anyone notice when your TTC that everyone around you is PG? Good luck to everyone XOXO

Q&A: Clomid basics?

I recently just finished my second round of clomid. I was on 100mg. My husband and I have been TTC for over a year now. We found out we were pregnant in August 2012 and had a miscarriage. I am hoping and praying that this second round works. I have my levels checked April 16 and should find out the following week if I am pregnant.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Tonight will be my last dose of clomid this cycle (my 1st cycle) i have not noticed any side effects, I also take it right before bed. Well my breasts kinda feel like they are going to leap off of my chest! but that is it. I am totally praying for this to work this month. The only hard part for me is the people that i am around. It is really hard for me not to talk about it. I am just so excited, but nobody seems to feel the same as me.

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Not everyone experiences side effects with Clomid. My doctor prescribed Clomid for me and I swore they had given me a placebo - didn't feel any different than before. After taking one round of Clomid, 50 mg, we conceived our now 8 month beautiful son. There is a risk of multiples with Clomid though. I did ovulate twice on the first round but only baby :)

Q&A: Clomid basics?

Our office doesn't use Clomid AT ALL and I'll tell you why. It is an old drug that is 50 years old, it has a 60 day half life and is a Pregnancy Risk Category X. This means that it is absolutely floating around in your system after you conceive. It is also notorious for causing cysts (former corpus luteum), to hang around and if you don't get pregnant and kick more Clomid behind it...it causes the cyst to grow and will stop other normal follicles from forming. Letrozole is a kinder, gentler drug, it doesn't have the side effects of Clomid, has a higher implantation rate, It is also Pregnancy Risk Category X...however, it has a half-life of 72 hours which means it is gone out of your system long before ovulation and conception takes place. It has been used in fertility for well over 10 years. If you are under 150 lbs, your physician should start you on 2.5 mg dose, if you are over 150 lbs, a 5 mg dose. Response is determined by the progesterone level one week after ovulation or a positive surge...if it is 10 or higher, this is considered an optimal (good) response, if it is lower, the medication needs to be increased. No reputable physician should be increasing the amount of medication unless a progesterone level is drawn to determine response.

I'm 26 years old and have been TTC for 3 years. Last month was my first round of clomid (days 3-7 50mg) and after a BFN on 12dpiui, AF showed up teh next day :(. I started round 2 of clomid yesterday (days 3-7, 100mg) and the only side effects I feel are tiredness and hottttt flashes. I sweat all night. But apparently my husband says I'm rather moody too.
