Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Can stress really cause or contribute to infertility?

Re: Can stress really cause or contribute to infertility?

The Bump Expert

Stress can certainly ruin one's life, but as long as regular menstrual cycles are present, it probably does not have significant effects on fertility. However, stress that comes from intense psychological factors, strenuous exercise (such as marathon training) or eating disorders can contribute to ovulation dysfunction and irregularities, which can in turn lead to infertility.

re: Q: Stress and TTC?

just last month I was convinced that I was preg. I took 4 home test, and then another 2 doctor tests. My doctor wasn't even fully convinced that I wasn't pregnant, she actually sent me to the hospital for an ultrasound. I am not pregnant, and after all of that, I actually got AF a week later. I have been trying to stress a little less since then. Hopefully this month will be our lucky month :)

re: Q: Stress and TTC?

My husband and I have benn trying for about a year and nothing. Last month my period came early and lasted two days(my doctor said my cycle changed)This month instead of bleeding I had spotting brown and some pink, I have take four pregnancy tests and they are all negative, I am not sure what to do. I have had all the tests that I possible could and my doctor tells me that my husband and I are healthy.

re: Q: Stress and TTC?

This happened to me. I wasn't TTC. I have never missed a period in my life. I was 2 weeks late. Took 3 HPT, 1 test at teh dr. and all negative. I had alot of sympotoms...but I wasn't preggers. Dr. made me take medication to start and the next month I started on the day I usually do. Now...I'm supposed to start next week. But DH and I decided to TTC after all of the talk about possibly being pregnant .... SO I hope that I will be. But still nervous we'll just go through all of this again. I'm afraid that because of the stress I won't start. Ugh... I wish it was so much easier.

re: Q: Stress and TTC?

Yeah, I think whoever wrote the answer to this is wrong. Every person I've ever talked to about this subject has said that stress is a factor. Any time I stress abuot AF or TTC, my AF always comes late.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

My doctor and a friend who went through the same thing keep telling me not to stress about things and to stop worrying, but during this time and trying to make sure we keep our jobs it's a little hard :( We've been trying for over a 1yr now ;(

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

We are in the 'talking about it' stage...not TTC quite yet, but educating ourselves on my cycle, while trying to determine the best plan (careers, time off, best and worst case scenarios, etc.). All I know is that women are sensitive beings. Many outside factors can affect us in ways that we aren't even aware of! 6 months before our wedding, I paid much closer attention to when my cycle was and when it would fall closer to our wedding date. I didn't stress about it, but I knew that I could expect my period 3 days after we returned from our honeymoon which immediately followed our wedding day. The stress leading up to the wedding was very very high, and I got my period 48 hours before our wedding, and it carried into our honeymoon. Stress matters!! This is just one occasion where I have had a major cycle change from stressful situations.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

The common wisdom that you should be relaxed when TTC is wrong -- when proper clinical studies are done for couples that are under a lot of stress and those that are not, there is no difference in the conception rates. I conceived as I was moving to a new country after 2 years of relaxing, yoga and acupuncture... Go figure.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Maybe it is not stress per se, but I think that being fixated or obsessed with getting pregnant puts untold pressure on yourself and your spouse which can manifest physiologically. There is a mind /body connection with everything and certainly there is with conception. I think it is impossible to "relax" and "not think about it" as many well-meaning people will suggest, but there's got to be other interests and other meaningful things going on in your life to take some of the focus off babies. This is what I am doing now, after 10 months of total obsession. I feel a difference in my breathing, my sleeping, and my relationship with my husband. I'm not pregnant yet, but I believe I will be when the time is right. Letting go, was hard, but the result is well worth it.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

lizabklyn...I agree with you! Me and my hubby have been TTC since July. But in reality this is actually our 2nd month of TTC. I've been off the pill for 4 months and I had a regular period the first month off of it then everything went downhill there. I had thought I was pregnant in July when I had missed my period but when I took a test it came back negative. I took 2 HPT and one at the doctors and all negative. So my doctor gave me Provera to jump start my system...then I started using the Ovulation tests which showed something was working but again if I was regular and able to know my cycle it would be easier to tell...so again thought i was prego took a test saturday and negative. So I'm going to wait another 2 weeks and retake. If it comes back neg. then I'll call my doctor. But we decided that we are just going to go with the flow and when it happens it happens. We just have too much going on right now and I think it's preventing us from conceiving. So only time will tell!

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Stress can affect things. When you are under stress, your body produces cortisol to help balance you out. However, if you are under constant stress, your body decides to focus heavily on producing extra cortisol and slows down production of progesterone -- which is needed in the luteal phase to help sustain implantation and pregnancy. Now, don't get all stressed out about it! Your body knows how to handle stress, and is used to it for the most part. For some people where it's a factor, just try to make things a little easier on yourself and do some light exercise (a walk, bike ride) 20 minutes a day to help relieve your stress. And breathe!

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Hello ladies!! Ive been reading everyones blogs for over 6 months and have been trying to get pregnant for over a year!!! Just when i was about to give up I recieved some info that I believe turned my luck around. I recieved a fertility letter that said treat your body as if it were pregnant...take the vitamins eat healthy and drink looooots of water!!! I did all of this for just 30 days and 3 days ago i took my "what i thought was going to be final" pregnancy test and it was positive!!! I was never sooo happy to see two solid pink lines in my entire life!!! Keep the faith and keep up the hard work!!! It will happen when your body is ready for it!!!

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

I was stressed out a lot for the past month or so, and my period ended up being 3 1/2 weeks late and I'd had 4 negative HPTs. I was about to head to the doctor when I got my period :(. I'm certain it was all the stress!

cariannehill |

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

NO- it cannot. Stress can delay your ovulation, which would in turn make your period late (which is was happens in 99.999999999999999999% of the cases where someone claims stress made them later). If you are stressed enough for it to truly have ferility related impacts, you would also be experiencing many other physical issues as well- your body would have to be a total wreck.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

I dont really know what to think of this I have been under stress for a long time (over 6 months) and very unhappy as life plans have gone down the drain, I have had a lot of anxiety for over 2yrs now. I dont know if all of this plays a part but I also have dysmennorhea and have had tests to see if there are any problems which have all come back clear!!! I dont really know what to think....

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Wait..."strenuous excersise and eating disorders can contribute to ovulation dysfunction and irregularities, which can in turn lead to infertility" Would that mean perminate infertility, or just temporary until the body levels its self out again. Not TTC yet, but I hae ALWAYS had irregular monthly cycles...I used to be super atheletic and yes I did have an eating disorder...now I am just on the go 24/7. Are babies out of the question for my husband and I?

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

I'm always super stressed. I work in the medical field and unfortunately its an occupational hazard. How do I find ways to relax. We've been TTC for several months and I have never had a regular period

notes2heather |

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

So I have always been a stressed out person, and may even have an anxiety disorder. I know that stress can have a huge affect on your body, and cause many disorders and even diseases, which I have unfortunately experienced. So, I definitely believe that stress can have an affect on fertility. This isn't to say that if you stress at all, you won't get pregnant. Because I think that anyone that is TTC is stressed. But, extreme stress will probably make the process take longer.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Stress most def. will contribute towards an inability to get pregnant. Your reproductive system is NOT needed for survival and when you are stressed your body begins it's use only essential bodily systems only (i.e. respiratory, circulatory, etc.). Evolutionary wise, during stressful situations, conception was not, and is still NOT necessary therefore reproductive system shuts down. Only your most basic systems will function normally. So you MUST RELAX if TTC!

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

I don't necessarily agree with the bump expert. Occasional short term stress, will not affect fertility in the long run, maybe just one cycle. However, chronic stress can affect fertility. It affects adrenal gland function which affects hormone levels and output. I know, I have been trying to conceive for over 3 years with no luck. My hormone levels are off and I am being tested for adrenal fatigue.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

Hi all! Stress certainly can be linked to infertility! When you are stressed, your body has to borrow hormones from other places to be able to cope with stress (create cortisol). Most often, the reproductive hormones are affected first. When your body is in this state, it is not thinking "now would be a good time to make a baby," it is thinking "gee, I better do what I can to deal with the stress!" Luckily, there are things that you can do to naturally to get your hormones back in balance... because our bodies want to be able to procreate - they were designed to procreate, and if given the right tools and care, they will do just that. As a Holistic Health Counselor, I have helped women to achieve this balance and get pregnant. If you are interested, visit www.getbalancedwellness.com.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

No. If stress was the only cause of someone not getting pregnant then they were not truly infertile. Stress CAN cause someone to have irregular cycles, however. FYI, please do not ever tell a TTC couple to just relax. Some infertile women, like me, have medical conditions like PCOS and hypothyroidism. Trust me, if "relaxing" cured those, I'ld save a lot of $$$ on prescriptions:)

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

I don't agree with this answer from the Bump. Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility, stress can actually cause you to have anovulatory cycles (you don't ovulate) and it can also postpone ovulation for several weeks. So you might still get your period, but you did not ovulate at all, or at least not when you thought your ovulated. After reading that book, I am convinced my 2.5 month long cycle this time was due to stress- work stress, death in the family, and traveling, all this month. Now I don't have a physiological symptom such as an eating disorder, but I am sure that the stress on my mind and body upset my cycle this month. You'd be surprised how much stress can interfere. Please read TCOYF!

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

My husband and I have been TTC for a year now. We went for infertility testing and I found out my right fallopian tube has a blockage. I work in a call center and am constantly stressed by the demands of my job. I have always had regular periods, have been taking prenatal vitamins since we've been TTC and eat a very healthy balanced diet. I feel as long as I work at a stressful job I will never get pregnant but jobs are few right now so I have to take what I can get.

Q&A: Can stress cause infertility?

I was in a stressful job two year ago and had consistent tummy cramps. I ended up resigning form that job as life is worth more than putting up with a job plying havoc with your health! Once i started to put me first..ie..exercise, yoga, green juice everyday and acupuncture my symptoms practically vanished and I fell pregnant even though a few months prior to conceiving I did some tests at the doctors and when I found out I was pregnant two weeks later I received a letter from the doctors referring me to a fertility clinic. How crazy!!!! I honestly believe stress can contribute to infertility alongside poor diet, lifestyle...I firmly believe treating the body holistically can rebalance the body and more women would fall pregnant
