Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I tested on Sunday with a BFN and AF is actually due tomorrow -- could I have just tested too early?

Re: I tested on Sunday with a BFN and AF is actually due tomorrow -- could I have just tested too early?

The Bump Expert

Good question -- pregnancy test timing is tricky. Home pregnancy tests detect the presence of a pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. During the first few weeks of pregnancy, the level of hCG in the urine increases rapidly, doubling every 2 to 3 days! That’s why you may have greater luck with an HPT if you wait until after you miss your period. The accuracy also varies because your menstrual and ovulation cycle can fluctuate from month to month. Plus, the exact day the fertilized egg implants can vary. Until implantation occurs and the placenta starts to develop, there is no hCG to be detected. Finally, each home pregnancy test kit has a different sensitivity to hCG.

So while it’s true that some HPTs can detect hCG up to four or five days before a missed period, it doesn’t work for everyone! The FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Pregnancy Test, for example, can be used as early as four days before you expect your period. But when used at that time, only 69% of pregnant women will test positively. That means 31% will get a false negative! Once your period is actually late, the result will be 99% accurate. Meaning, no second guessing and (hopefully) lots of celebrating!

re: Q: Pregnancy Test Timeline?

Is one brand better than another?

sheilamatt2005 | April 18 , 2007 4:02 PM

re: Q: Pregnancy Test Timeline?

I don't think brand matters that much, although each brand is made to detect different levels of hCG. I used different brands with both pregnancies (this time I'm just 3 weeks along) and got positive results both times about a week before my period was even due.

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

if you're really concerned about being pregnant and OTC tests aren't giving you straight answers, try to get your doctor to order you a blood test. They detect hCG's much sooner and can actually tell you how little or how much hCG is present.

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

I used Walmart's Equate brand, and it had no problems telling me I'm pregnant. :-) Of course, it was also a couple weeks after my period should have been.

rachelb823 | December 02 , 2007 8:20 AM

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

It depends on the timing of your specific body, not the brand of the test. I got a false negative 4 days before my expected period, and a positive on the day my period was due. If you want to be sure, wait until your period is late, and then confirm with a blood test at your doctor.

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

i've been off birth control since the beginning of November, and wasn't taking it regularly right before than anyway. i've been nauseous so i tried a test and it was negative. is it too soon to already be pregnant? since i don't know WHEN my next period could be, could my test possibly have been a false negative?

amordemar | December 04 , 2007 2:05 PM

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

I have no idea when to test. My DD is 6 months old and I have not yet had a period; nor have I completely stopped nursing--in the process of weaning. I have been testing on Sunday mornings (which is expensive to test each week) and I had BFN this past Sunday. However, I am so incredibly nauseaus this week I keep hoping I'm pg and it was a false negative. Nonetheless, is it too soon to test again or should I wait for Sunday. Oh, it's important that I know if I'm pg asap because I had two mc due to low progesterone. I was able to have a successful pg with A LOT of progesterone.

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

Princess, you should just wait it out. When I stopped using BC, AF was very erratic, took a few months to become predictible. Wait until you miss your period a few days, then test.

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

My cycle was suppose to come on on the 12th and on the 15th I took a pregnacy test from Family Dollar and it was positive. I think you should always wait until you miss your period other wise you risk the chances of getting wron results.

What are the chances of a false positive...especially if I take more than one test and brand? I just wouldn't wnat my hopes up for nothing!

Does anyone know how soon you can get a postive reading with a blood test? I missed some of my pills (not on purpose I swear) about 2 weeks ago and I've been feeling really nauseated and worn out the past few days. My cycle isnt supposed to start until the monday after next.

I tested positive three times I know common sence says I am prego but I do not wan tto celebrate to early. Can you get a false positive? I am trying to set up an appointment with my doctor.

laughingwild | January 27 , 2008 11:34 AM

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

I have never heard of someone having a false positive. A nurse told me that rarely a home test will give you a false negative, but it will never give you a false positive. It only shows as positive if the horomone is present, and if it's present, then you are preggo!

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

Hi everyone. I'm new to teh blog. My honey and I have been trying since the summer and I am so discouraged right now. I am NEVER late...EVER. I tell you, I', like clockwork. My AF was due yesterday, and since nothing happened, I got excietd, jumped the gun and went to the hospital to get a test taken. Not blood, urine. Anyway, I almost died when it came back negative. But here I am another day and no AF. I hope that it was a false negative, but I am so anxious I can't even sleep. This is terrible. Yeah, I just needed to vent without bursting into tears :) Good Luck everyone!!!

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

This waiting period is quite nerve recking. I wish there was a sooner way to find out rather than when you miss your period or a few days before. Are there any signs before missing your period??I wish everyone alot of baby luck because this is such a stressful process & I had NO IDEA.

ttehrani | February 05 , 2008 11:27 PM

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

This process is extremely stressful... especially for an impatient woman like myself! I expect AF around the 23rd of this month... but my cycles vary quite a bit... could be sooner. I would love to test as early as this weekend but am sure it is probably too early. How do you all stand the wait?

BarryHappy | February 13 , 2008 3:34 PM

re: Q: Too Soon For Pregnancy Test?

I too am waiting to test and praying my AF doesnt visit this month. I can recommend something that helps with the waiting though. A Bachs emedy called IMPATIENS which I add a few drops of to my tea. It helps to calm the nerves and frequent visits to the loo to check!

Now I'm about 3 Days from AF and am nauseous, and exhausted. I took an HPT (well, 3!) and all are very clearly pointing to Prego! Could it be a false positive?

I took 3 hpt's on late period days 3,4 and 5 and they were all negative. Do you think I could be pregnant even thought I thought I had already ovulated? re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

My DH and I had sex the week I was ovulating, and according to an ovulation calendar, the day after I was ovulating. I'm not sure if I'm just anxious but I keep getting this feeling that goes from my chest to my stomach, feels like a rush, is that a sign that I'm pg? Im not suppose to start my period until July 9th. Can I be pg?

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

I think I'm in the same boat as a lot of people. I lost my luggage with my BC in it on a recent trip and so my husband and I decided it would be a good time to TTC. My last AF was on July 4 and has not returned. Since I was on BC for a few years, I'm not sure what my cycle is, and have take to test, that have turned up negative; however, I am having similar feelings, tiredness, cramp and no AF. I really hope I could still be pg, but I'm getting sick of waiting for something to happen.

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

I am so right there with y'all. My hubby and I aren't actively TTC but for the past week and a half to two weeks I have been exhausted and my bbs are RIDICULOUSLY sore. Since this has never been a problem for me during my cycle it kind of put my radar up. Then DH was out of town for 5 days for work and when he got home he mentioned that "the girls" looked bigger and fuller. Friday, (2 days before AF was due) I took a HPT...negative. Saturday night I started spotting lightly and figured that was it, AF was in town no baby for us. Had a little through yesterday (when AF was actually due) and then nothing. So now I guess I'm technically one day late and took a test this morning...still negative! I am so frustrated! I've had ab twinges, but not like how I get with AF. I'm also incredibly regular...never ever late. I guess I'm mostly freaked out b/c last time something like this happened I MC. Should I just give it up this month or retest if AF doesn't show up in a few more days?

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

I'm so confused about this whole TTC process. I do not have a regular P. I go for months at a time without getting it and sometimes I get it back to back and once it lasted for two weeks straight. I've been pregnant 3 times 1 by abortion and two by miscarriage. I never know when to test because if i miss a P i just think it's normal. I'm familar with the symptoms of being pregnant so i just wait for those. I feel like i might be but i just too a test and it was negative. I don't know if it's too early or not. Should I test every week or every month?

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

I took an EPT Digital test around 5pm today and was thrilled when it said "PREGNANT" so I went to the store and got several other kinds of tests just to make sure. First Response Gold said -NO so I got frustrated. Then I took a Clear Blue Easy Digital and it said "PREGNANT". Then I took the 2nd FR & again it said -NO!!! By the time I took the last Digital CBE it was 9pm and I was basically forcing myself to Pee! It came out "NOT PREGNANT". I am so frustrated! I don't know what to believe - I am 2 days late & we've been TTC for 4 months so I really hope we are expecting! Any advice???

So my hubby and I are not actively ttc but if it happens we would be excited and I am on an antibiotic for a sinus infection and didn't know that it could affect my bc...had sex twice during this week and it should be the middle of my cycle but I've been on bc so long that I don't even really know. I have been feeling really tired w/ sore breasts & a lil bit of twinges in my stomach...any thoughts about whether I could be pregnant? And is it too soon to take a test?

kellbell827 | October 11 , 2008 9:37 AM

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

I will just say that I've taken 3 HPT's and they all tested negative. Plus I had a blood test which came back as 1.3 and the nurse said, "I guess that is pretty much negative." I was like... you should be alittle bit clearer! But I was supposed to get AF on 9/24. Still no sign... I'm like clockwork usually. The dr. said there's nothing wrong and AF will eventually come. I'm kind of freaking out though! Has anyone experienced this before? I was having some "syptoms" and thought I was preggers, but I've been feeling a little better that last few days. What do I do?

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

AF was supposed to come last Tuesday, I had some spotting but no AF. I tested and it was negative. We were in Cabo celebrating our 1 year and all week I had to pee every 10 min, boobs hurt so bad, tired..but I didn't think anything of it because I was spotting so I thought it was AF. Took a test today and it's positive! I'm sick with a sinus infection so that on top of my preggo symptoms are not nice! Hubby and I are in shock! Excited but still in shock mode, time to see the doc to get this confirmed!

It's day 31, wouldn't it be positive by now if I was?

rhannan | November 29 , 2008 3:53 PM

re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

My personal oppinion is to use a digital test. I had 3 negative tests using non-digital tests about 3 days apart starting 3 days before anticipated onset of period (but I tend to be a bit irregular). The 1st positive test was non-digital and I did it in a.m. but it was really hard to tell. I did a digi one later that evening & it came up positive right away. Just to be sure I did a non digi one then (all I had) and it was still a very faint positive. I've since retested with both styles and results are clearer but it's 2 weeks after 30 days from onset of my last period.

So I used an HPT this morning, Equate brand from Wal-Mart and it said negative. But it might be too early. Some ppl can't afford to run to the Dr. all the time for a blood test. re: Q: Too soon for pregnancy test?

First Reponse Early Result gave me the happy news 4 days before my period was due. It was a faint line, but a line's a line!

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I got a positive yesterday (the day AF was due) and took another today and it was negative. What does that mean? I see the doctor this afternoon. I hope I'm not wasting her time, but I have fatigue, sore breasts and some cramping.

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

My AF is 8 days late and I've taken 3 tests all negative. Should I wait another week or just go see my doctor? My husband and mom suggest the doctor but I don't want to jump the gun.

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

AF is 3 days late and I have all the symptoms... sore breasts, ridiculously tired... but each time I test it's a BFN! AF is NEVER, EVER late... 27 days like clockwork since I went off the pill in November '08. Tom Petty said it well, "The waiting is the hardest part!" (However, I highly doubt he was referring to this! LOL)

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I have a weird situation. I'm hoping that someone can give me some help. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for the past 7 months. I also started using the Clear blue fertility monitor. I have a very regular cycle and have my period every 28-29 days. Last month I ovulated at day 14 (I was out of town and my husband I couldn't try). This month is when things get a little tricky. I ovulated on day 27 (the day before my period). It has been 7 days since I ovulated and I am now 6 days late on my period. I have had some cramps the first few days, but nothing happen. I finally used a pregnancy test when I got up and it came back negative. Is it too soon to be testing? Should I see a doctor? Could I be pregnant or is something wrong with me? Please help!

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

To all the ladies with the positive pregnancy tests: You can only get a false positive if you have just given birth or you misread the test. A HPT tests for the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) This is only present when a glycoprotein is secreted by the placenta, shortly after fertilization. This means that you can only get a true positive if you are in fact pregnant. So if you get a positive than CONGRATS! You are pregnant. False positives are very common so you can test multiple times and have 4 neg and 1 positive test. But as long as you get a true positive than you are truly preggo. Now, the problem here is to make sure you are reading the test correctly. There should be a clear line indicating pregnancy. if you are unsure a digital test can be inexpensive and give you a clear result. A quantitative blood test from your doctor (not qualitative) is the most accurate! Good luck!!!

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

i have always used first response test (early result), it has never let me down, I've taking it as early as 1 week before my expected cycle to just 2 days before. every time i had a positive result, it was always accurate, I'm now waiting for baby #4 :)

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I waited until my period was two days late. Unless your having tons of symptoms it's better to wait. Pregnancy test aren't inexpensive. Also, even if you're having symptoms it could just be your period.

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

everyone keeps saying that the tests aren't cheap. in the past i've bought test strips online at 10 strips for 5$ pretty sure that included shipping also if i don't want to wait for the delivery, i buy them at the dollar store. check your local one and see if they carry them. it's not a fancy digital one but you're just peeing on it. and they have showed pregnancy with all three of mine.

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I am 5 days late for my period. My husband and I have been trying for 3 years to have a baby. We recently got pregnant but then I lot my baby at 13 weeks this past October. We decided to try again right away. I have never been late and have taken 3 pregnancy tests (digital clear blue easy) but all of them have turned out "Not Pregnant". I have tons of symptoms: headaches, backaches, nauseous, smells are strong, missed period, and I have to pee every hour to hour and a half. I am going crazy...has anyone had problems with these test strips?

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I kept getting negative tests for over a week after I got pregnant. I went to the Doc and got a blood test, yup I was pregnant. Every womans levels are different so I would go to the Doc for a blood test.

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I took a first response test and I got one dark pink and one fainter pink line. Do they both need to be dark? I have been googling it like crazy and am getting mixed messages! I don't have a doctors appt. for 7 more days...getting anxious!!

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I've been getting symptoms since last Tusday: nausea, cramps, diarrhea, ab twinges. My AF varies from 28-33 days so 28 days will be tomorrow. I took a test yesterday and got a BFN. I'm not totally convinced however am disappointed. I'll wait until Sunday which is sooo hard to do and then try again if AF hasn't come.

Q&A: When to take a pregnancy test?

I absolutely HATE the waiting process for HPT'ing...I'm so anxious to see if the Clomid I am on worked..this was my first round. AF is due on Feb 13 and I took a HPT today (early response) and was not PG. Think there is still hope for me this month?
