Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

What different types of home pregnancy tests are there?

Re: What different types of home pregnancy tests are there?

The Bump Expert

There are oodles of different home pregnancy test brands to choose from, but don’t get overwhelmed -- you don’t need to try them all! Still, it's a good idea to test at least twice before you make an appointment with your doctor. You can swing into almost any drugstores and buy an over-the-counter home pregnancy test for anywhere between $8 and $20, depending on the brand and how many tests are included in the kit.

But first, get a grip on the basic types of tests. Some will have you pee on a stick, others will ask you to pee in a cup, and these days, some are even digital. They all test for the same thing, though -- a hormone called hCG, which is produced by the placenta and therefore indicates a pregnancy.

Pee-on-a-stick tests
Most common are tests that require you to pee on a stick or strip. Follow the directions loosely. You'll probably just need to pee on the stick or strip and wait for the result to show (usually a particular color or symbol that signals a positive or negative test).

Pee-in-a-cup test
After peeing in a cup, you'll either put a testing device in the cup itself, or place small drops of urine onto the device. If your urine contains hCG, it'll cause a portion of the stick to change color after several minutes.

Digital tests
These are designed to make the sometimes tricky results-reading process a little less confusing. If you find yourself frustrated over faded lines and barely-there plus or negative signs, pick up a digital test. They take away the guess work by giving a point-blank result of either pregnant or not.

Remember that with any test, false positives and negatives are always a possibility. Testing twice and consulting with a doctor is the best way to confirm.

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

The dollar store has a $1 test and a $5 test. They both actually work! I was mortified when my husband came back from the store with a $1 test! When it came back positive, I immediately second-guessed its validity. I went back myself and was told they didn't have EPT or First Response. I took their most expensive option ($5) and it also came back positive. That was confirmed later that dat with my doctor.

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

Most of the HPT work exactly the same. They may pick up different levels of hormone; the more precise ones can be used the day of a missed period or the day before and the less precise ones are typically accurate as soon as the day after a missed period. I just buy whatever is cheapest and convince myself to wait a few days or a week after a missed period to test. The waiting is killer, but it makes the BFP even more exciting! Besides, after a few BFN, it's even more painful to pay for the expensive HPT with no baby to show for it.

I've taken 3, and in ll three they appear to be positive results, but the line (or plus sign as the case may be) was faded. What experience does anyone have with this? Am I pregnant or not? Trying to decide if I should tell my husband tonight at Midnight - it's New Year's Eve! If I am pregnant it's early, like 4 weeks. Could that be why I am getting the slightly inconclusive results?

I used First Response today. I saw one dark, solid line and one VERY light pink line. The second was only visible when i held the test up not when it was lying on the counter. I also took one 5 days ago and was clearly negative. I was supposed to get my period today. Is it still too early to tell? Has any one had problems with FIrst Reponse?

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

I have used Clear Blue, First Responce, and EPT. The first 2 (CB & FR) said neg, however when I took 2 of the EPT there was a super light second line. Like you said dani920, I could only see it when I picked it up, but this happened twice! I really want to know. Its driving me crazy. Was supposed to start Jan 30 but nothing. Have some preg symtoms. Boobs are bigger, had cramps back when i was supposed to start but no AF. Im more tired that usual and my husband says Ive been more emo than normal. Idk if I am thinking things are different bc I want to be pregnant so bad or what. Going to the doctor March 2nd so I guess well see then....

I tested three times -- Once two days after my missed period, another 3 days later, and another 3 days after that -- all with three different brands of test and all were negative. I went to my doctor two days after my last negative test and there was a BFP on the test I took in the office!

first response on tuesday (positive) and equate brand (wal-mart, $4 - also positive) this morning; doctor took blood for serum test yesterday afternoon, but said results could take a day or 2 to get back to him (which is why I did a second home test, and a different brand...so I could start telling people!)

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

On Monday, I took a Walgreen's brand HPT and got a thin blue line (positive), not as thick as the one next to it. So I then tried 3 Clearblue Easy + or -, all + (positve). On Wednesday, I bought the EPT digitals and made my friend take it with me. You know, I needed a control. LOL! Mine said "Pregnant," hers "Not Pregnant." So 5 positive pregnancy tests later, I've decided I'm pregnant. Going to the OB/GYN tomorrow afternoon to see what he says.

I did 2 Clear Blue Easy. Both came out the same with just a normal horizontal line and a very faint vertical line (which would complete the plus). So I think that yes, I am preggers but just to be sure I'm going to go spring for the digital version tomorrow.

reedejadestiny | June 10 , 2010 11:33 AM

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

Here's a random question - to set up the situation: first thing Thursday morning I take a home test. Comes out clearly positive. Later that day go to doc (unrelated to possible pregnancy), need an x-ray. Doc takes urine (not blood) test, says it's negative. Couple days later, still feeling nauseous, vomiting, etc., so I take another home test - in the afternoon, different brand. The line was super faint, so neither my friend or I were "SURE". Back to the drug store to buy a 2-pack. First test (that night) comes back negative. Second test (first thing next morning) comes back positive. So I am wondering... is the urine test at the dr more reliable than a urine test at home? Especially curious since someone above said their doc uses EPT. I am scheduled to go see my doc for a confirmation blood test, but am across country until next week. Until then, just trying to (1) manage my curiosity, (2) reconcile two positives, two negatives, and a maybe, and (3) resist the temptation to go back to CVS for yet another round of stick tests. :)

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

I got a positive test on First Response digital yesterday (ovulated 2 weeks ago and no period yet). Doctor won't see me for 10 days, so now I don't know if I trust the positive and know I'm pregnant or be skeptical. Does everyone take multiple tests or do you ever just trust the positive?

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

Hey everyone! I just bought up some stock in HPT's and with my Period more than a week away, I've felt wierd warming sensations in my belly, nausea last week, body aches this week. I'm wondering if anyone has ever gotten a BFP before the Early PT's say they read results. I've taken two so far and got BFN's but I don't know if I should hold out hope that the HPT will test positive before it says it can.. Or if I need to come to terms with the fact that I'm not Preggo, just a girl with flu-like symptoms while we're TTC. THANKS!!

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

I'm having another issue - my doc is treating interstitial cystitis so I am on and off AZO standard, which changes the color of your pee - should I use digitals? I am finding it's making for some funky results with the color-change-tests! Also I've heard that if the HCG is there, it doesn't matter what test you use, it'll show up loud and clear.

For my first baby I used EPT once and it was positive. This time I used 3 EPT and they were all negative. The next day I bought more but this time I got Clear Blue and it was positive! The next day! So no sure if it was the test or my hormone levels just needed that extra day

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

Well today I stopped by the dollar store and got the pee on the stick test and they came up positive and I am only a week late. So yes the cheap test do work. I have took the pregnant test from walmart that was like 15 dollars and it came back negative a few days ago. So all in all if you think you maybe pregnant and your getting negative and positive pregnancy test the best thing to do is get in to see your doctor and have blood work done. By me asking for blood work with my oldest child I was able to have her the doctors were going to do a dnc on me cause my test were doing that. Sometimes if you drink a soda or smoke a cig it can through off the result

I used the Walmart Brand a week ago and got a faint positive line. I tested again today with the Walmart Brand 2nd test and it was a bright positive line. I am going to buy a different brand of pregnancy test today to see for sure. I had false negatives with my first son who is now 5, so I was shocked to go in and find out I am pregnant and have a child 18 hours later, so I don't need any shocks this time.

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

I used EPT digital and got a positive in the evening, after not having peed for about 5 hours. Then, I chugged a bottle of water and took the second one and it was neg. I called my sis-in-law who is preggy for the 4th time and she said that taking it at night and after a bunch of water can water down the test and that hormone levels are highest in the AM. After a completely sleepless night I took another one this AM and its positive!! So excited! Trying not to get to caught up until I get the blood test, but how can I help it?? If it helps, my sis-in-law, who happens to be fertile murtle says that the digital EPT have given her a lot of false negs.

Just wanted to say that Dollar Tree has $1 pregnancy tests and $1 ovulation tests. Both totally work! If you were like me and wanting to test yourself all the time, why waste $$$ on so many tests! If youre skeptical of the test, you can always buy the real one...I took 3 in a row and they were all positive!! Then I checked it with a 4th, "real" cvs test! just think, you could spend $10 on 10 tests, or $10 on one!

Just thought I would give you a website that you can purchase bulk strips (they just don't have the plastic casing). This is great if you a compulsive everyday tester like myself. I just purchase 20 strips at 0.80 cents a a strip. They come at a 20 mlU/ml/hCG sensitivty which is really great! The lower the sensitivity number means the better they work. Meaning they will show you a BFP with the smallest hint of hcg in your urine. Go to http://www.early-pregnancy-tests.com and you can read success stories and check out ovulation kits, pregnancy tests, basil temp thermometer, pre-seed lube...anything you might need to try to conceive on your own. I know I sound like a commertial for them, but I'm just really excited to find something that works so well for such a great price! Hope this helps :)
