Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

What different types of home pregnancy tests are there?

Re: What different types of home pregnancy tests are there?

The Bump Expert

There are oodles of different home pregnancy test brands to choose from, but don’t get overwhelmed -- you don’t need to try them all! Still, it's a good idea to test at least twice before you make an appointment with your doctor. You can swing into almost any drugstores and buy an over-the-counter home pregnancy test for anywhere between $8 and $20, depending on the brand and how many tests are included in the kit.

But first, get a grip on the basic types of tests. Some will have you pee on a stick, others will ask you to pee in a cup, and these days, some are even digital. They all test for the same thing, though -- a hormone called hCG, which is produced by the placenta and therefore indicates a pregnancy.

Pee-on-a-stick tests
Most common are tests that require you to pee on a stick or strip. Follow the directions loosely. You'll probably just need to pee on the stick or strip and wait for the result to show (usually a particular color or symbol that signals a positive or negative test).

Pee-in-a-cup test
After peeing in a cup, you'll either put a testing device in the cup itself, or place small drops of urine onto the device. If your urine contains hCG, it'll cause a portion of the stick to change color after several minutes.

Digital tests
These are designed to make the sometimes tricky results-reading process a little less confusing. If you find yourself frustrated over faded lines and barely-there plus or negative signs, pick up a digital test. They take away the guess work by giving a point-blank result of either pregnant or not.

Remember that with any test, false positives and negatives are always a possibility. Testing twice and consulting with a doctor is the best way to confirm.

The dollar store has a $1 test and a $5 test. They both actually work! I was mortified when my husband came back from the store with a $1 test! When it came back positive, I immediately second-guessed its validity. I went back myself and was told they didn't have EPT or First Response. I took their most expensive option ($5) and it also came back positive. That was confirmed later that dat with my doctor.

Most of the HPT work exactly the same. They may pick up different levels of hormone; the more precise ones can be used the day of a missed period or the day before and the less precise ones are typically accurate as soon as the day after a missed period. I just buy whatever is cheapest and convince myself to wait a few days or a week after a missed period to test. The waiting is killer, but it makes the BFP even more exciting! Besides, after a few BFN, it's even more painful to pay for the expensive HPT with no baby to show for it.

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

I've taken 3, and in ll three they appear to be positive results, but the line (or plus sign as the case may be) was faded. What experience does anyone have with this? Am I pregnant or not? Trying to decide if I should tell my husband tonight at Midnight - it's New Year's Eve! If I am pregnant it's early, like 4 weeks. Could that be why I am getting the slightly inconclusive results?

Q&A: Types of home pregnancy tests?

I used First Response today. I saw one dark, solid line and one VERY light pink line. The second was only visible when i held the test up not when it was lying on the counter. I also took one 5 days ago and was clearly negative. I was supposed to get my period today. Is it still too early to tell? Has any one had problems with FIrst Reponse?
