Q&A: Prenatal vitamin basics?

Why do I need prenatal vitamins? How do I pick out the right one?

Re: Why do I need prenatal vitamins? How do I pick out the right one?

The Bump Expert

First of all, the best time to start taking care of baby is before you even conceive. Why? Because you’ll provide your body with essential nutrients that’ll not only help you conceive, but also have a healthy pregnancy.

Folic acid is crucial because getting enough now can vastly decrease the risk of neural tube defects (such as spina bifida) as baby develops. Folic acid is so important that experts recommend all women of childbearing age (even those not TTC) get 400 mcg of folic acid a day.

Make sure to choose a formula that also contains zinc, which can actually increase fertility. And, research shows that women who take vitamins with at least ten mg of vitamin B6 before they conceive or during the first few weeks of pregnancy reduce the likelihood of morning sickness. (And that’s a pretty convincing reason to take your vitamins right there!)

Make SURE to get enough folic acid! After that... it doesn't make much of a difference which vitamin you take. They all are made to specific standards. If morning sickness is an issue, there are some brands that divide your daily dose into two pills, one you take in the morning, and one you take in the evening, so that it's gentler on your stomach. Really, you should be taking a prenatal vitamin before you conceive, but any time is a good time to start taking them!!

Q&A: Prenatal vitamin basics?

When should I start taking prenatal vitamins? We want to start TTC in May/June. Should I start taking them now, 3 months before, or should I wait?

Q&A: Prenatal vitamin basics?

My doctor told me to start taking 800 mg of folic acid 2 months before TTC and to start taking prenatal vitamins the month I actually started trying. Hope this helps!

Q&A: Prenatal vitamin basics?

I am not a doctor but a research scientist so as I begin TTC I have been enjoying researching what is necessary in a good prenatal vitamin, here is what I've found. . . A good prenatal vitamin should contain the following: 800mg folic acid 400IU vitamin D 2500IU vitamin A (this should be derived from plants - beta-carotene NOT retinly-palmitate, there is research that retinyl-palmitate may be linked to birth defects) Vitamin C 70mg Vitamin E 10mg Calcium 200mg Thiamine 3mg Riboflavin 2mg Niacine 20mg B12 6mcg Zinc 15mg Iron 17mg Vitamins A, D, E and K are not safe in larger than recommended amounts. Also the units (mg, mcg, IU) may be confusing so the best thing to look at is the % Daily value for these making sure that they are not greater than 100%. Also from reading I've noticed that there's been a lot of research to show that the Omega-3 DHA is crucial for early development so many supplements now include DHA. 300mg/day is recommended.

Q&A: Prenatal vitamin basics?

My husband and I have been trying very hard to conceive for the past few months and no result yet. I've been taking my vitamins just like the doctor prescribed. I've also been taking vitamins for stress and I hope that me not conceiving is not related to them.
