Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but how does conception actually occur? I don't understand why doctors start counting the number of weeks pregnant from the last period. Doesn't ovulation happen after that?

Re: This is going to sound like a dumb question, but how does conception actually occur? I don't understand why doctors start counting the number of weeks pregnant from the last period. Doesn't ovulation happen after that?

The Bump Expert

You're right -- ovulation occurs about two weeks after the start of your period (the first day of your menstrual cycle). If the stars align, that's when conception happens too. Typically, one of your ovaries releases an egg 12 to 16 days after your cycle begins. It then travels from the ovary through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. But it only lives about 24 hours, so it must meet up with a sperm during that time to make a baby. Each ejaculation contains 30 to 300 million sperm cells (which can live in a woman’s body for up to 72 hours), but it only takes one to fertilize the egg.

However, those millions of swimmers encounter some obstacles along the way. The vagina is an acidic environment that's tough on sperm. Throw in the long distance from the cervix, through uterus, to fallopian tube and it's a pretty rough journey. If the sperm and egg do meet, the sperm must burrow into the egg's outer coating. Once the genetic material starts to combine, you've got yourself an embryo. The embryo then travels back down into the uterus and implants itself in the wall, and congratulations -- you're pregnant!

The reason for the two bonus weeks of pregnancy? Your doctor can't be sure exactly when you ovulated, but she can be sure of the date your cycle started, so she counts from then.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

It may seem strange, but your pregnancy journey begins before your baby even is conceived. The first week of pregnancy actually begins with the start of your last menstrual period. Why? It's hard to pinpoint exactly when your egg becomes fertilized, but the date of your last cycle is a more accurate starting point. Your doctor will calculate your due date by counting 40 weeks from the start of your last menstrual period. It's called the Gestational Age, and it's how most doctors measure pregnancies. Because ovulation and conception take place about two weeks after your period begins, your baby's Fetal Age (which begins when your egg is fertilized) will be two weeks less than his Gestational Age. So, when you're 8 weeks pregnant, your baby's fetal age is 6 weeks. www.strongmoms.com is a great resource for a week by week explanation of what happens to your baby, your body, your health and a weekly checklist. It's really interesting stuff.

So when you enter your due date on the websites that give you a week by week update to what your baby is doing, do they factor in those two weeks or are you reading about the baby two weeks in advance?

ashleyc42 | August 12 , 2009 10:42 AM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

They usually give an accurate update. When I've read them, weeks one and two are typically...you aren't even pregnant yet...you are having your period. Your body is gearing up to release an egg, etc. I think they are almost always correct week-by-week!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

So, I stopped my BC on Sunday ( December 13,2009) I started my period yesterday Tuesday. Does this mean that I might have a chance to get pregnat that my body might actually release an egg? Or is there still a slight possiblity that the BC is still working and will prevent it from coming at all for this month? Or do I have a chance that it might as well?

Schilton9 | December 16 , 2009 12:01 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

yes you can get pregnany this month. BC is out of your system almost immediately.

chickitty | December 16 , 2009 6:46 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

You should give your body about a month to get the BC out of your body completely - depends on how long you were taking it - - talk to your doctor though for a more accurate answer. This is what my doctor told me.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Yea, my doc told me we were fine to start trying right away off bc. Got pg right away and I ended up m/c that baby. Then I found out from my obgyn that there is more of a risk of m/c right off bc. So, if I could do it over again, I would wait 1 cycle- my original plan.

So what if you dont ovulate when the fertility chart says you should... does that change the whole 2 week thing?

squeak12 | January 03 , 2010 4:29 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

get yourself a box of ovulation/fertility tests. they are super easy; come in boxes of 20+ so you can test every 12 hours for the LHsurge. i test positive for LH surge about 12 days after my period begins. .... I kind of have the same type question... what if i don't actually ovulate within that 12-24 hour period . Could it be a shorter or longer time frame?. Is that possible?

prettypisces | January 04 , 2010 12:38 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

To squeak12 and prettypisces...You may also consider the Clear Blue Easy digital ovulation monitor since it doesn't just measure your LHsurge (since that would technically give you a 12-24 hour period to have sex) but also your estrogen levels which will also allow you to know the fertile days prior to ovulating (which can technically increase your chances by telling you up to 3 days before you ovulate so you can give the sperm a head start). It's expensive (I would try to find it cheaper online like at Amazon). I tried it and got pregnant the 1st month. Unfortunately, I miscarried extremely early on, but it let me know it actually works!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

I don't know if there is a place to find this question with answer so I will ask . Ok, I was wondering if it was possible to start your period but not ovulate. My husband and I have been ttc for 8 months now, I have never been on birth control but did have my tubes untied in April. The doctor said everything went wonderfully but after a few months with no luck I decided to try an ovulation calculator and I followed the instructions to a T and counted the days just like I have been for the last 8 months but I never got the "smiley" face that my LH levels were up. Is it possible that all this time I have actually not been ovulating even though I've had a regular cycle each month???? I'm making a doctors appt this month but I just wondered if anyone could give me any feedback before I paid the lots of $$$ to see the doctor and him tell me I'm crazy and not to worry!! :) Thank you for your time.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

To "goodluckelephants", I don't think you're crazy. My sister found out that she was not ovulating after taking one of those tests. She's seen the doctor and has tried different kinds of medication (I don't know what kinds) but I know she and her husband have been trying for 6 months or so now. Sorry I don't have alot of info, I just don't want you to think you're crazy :-) Good Luck!!!

nstasa | January 13 , 2010 1:30 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

To "goodluckelephants": You are most certainly not crazy. I have been off the pill since last April and have found that although I was having a period for the first 6 months off, I wasn't ovulating based on the ovulation kits--and my doctor said it was most certainly possible, in which he has now prescribed me Clomid to help that process. Just make sure to track everything and then maybe your doctor will help you get to the next step of TTC too! Best of luck!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

"goodluckelephants": I'm so glad you asked because I'm wondering the exact same thing? I'm in a similar situation minus the untying of my tubes.... My husband and I have been TTC for 5 months now. This is the first month however that i'm trying an OPK. So far no smiley but only on day 10 of my cycle (if i'm calculating right?) Anyway, I was wondering if you can have your period and not ovulate. When I googled the question I found some info on anovulatory bleeding? Not sure if I understand what this is......... I just wanted to also reassure you that you're not crazy :) Ladies of "The Bump", I'm so glad to have found this site :) It is really helping me to know that there are many women going through the same troubles of conceiving. Thank you ladies for all your support :) Good luck to everyone TTC!!!! Maybe this will be the month!!!! La

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

I'd like to check an ovulation calendar for the next month, but i'm not sure if i count the first day of my period being when I started spotting (4 days ago - very lightly and off and on since then) or if it's today (when the occasional spotting turned into heavier bleeding more like a regular period)?

jacquiestraight | January 20 , 2010 12:09 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

I always wonder the same thing, as my cycles always start with very, very minor spotting. I've asked on other boards before and was told to start on the day you first notice bleeding. But I swear that I previously saw information somewhere out there on the web that said to wait to start counting your cycle until you have a consistent flow. So I'm torn!

armywifemama | January 21 , 2010 8:46 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Yes ovulation happens about 2 weeks into the cycle, however, doctors aren't exactly sure when you conceived but they do know when you had your last period. Therefore counting from the LMP seems to account for the minute discrepancies between exactly when you ovulated. If you are trying to conceive, you need to have sex BEFORE actually ovulating because once you ovulate, the egg starts traveling down the fallopian tube. The egg needs to be fertilized early in that trip down the fallopian tube so that it is developed enough to be able to attach to the uterus by the time it gets there. If you have sex when you ovulate rather than before, the egg will get fertilized right before traveling into the uterus. This dramatically decreases the chances that it will adhere to the uterus properly to acheive a viable pregnancy.

To: Armywifemama I just asked that same question of my doctor, what do I count the first day of my cycle when I notice spotting or actual flow. She said that the first day is counted as the first day of flow! Hope this helps, I am pretty sure my DH and I were missing our Ovulation Day because of this.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

My question is what if you know the date that you got pregnant? Doctors use your last period to guess the date you are due and how far along you are but what if you know the day or within two days of the day you concived? Does that change anything?

DuckyBear | February 11 , 2010 11:39 AM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

DuckyBear, If you know the day you ovulated (the day you conceived), you can figure out your due date much more accurately. Doctors use the "pregnancy wheel" to determine the due date and the wheel assumes that all women have a 28 day cycle and ovulate on day 14, which simply is NOT true. This poses a problem because, often, women with much longer cycles go past their due date (which was determined by the pregnancy wheel) and a doctor may prematurely induce them. The book, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" tells how to determine your due date: Add nine months from the day after ovulation and subtract seven days from that.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

I am new to this site, joined about a week ago and have become addicted to it; almost as much as Facebook! :) I have never posted before, but have decided to start asking some questions. They might sound a little stupid and I'm sure it's probably answered on here somewhere, but... On average, how long does it take for pregnancy symptoms to start occuring? My hubby (of a year and 2 months) and I are going on 2 1/2 months TTC #2 after a D&C in October. I really think my ovulation is off, and am trying to pin it down. I ran out of my Nuva Rings towards the end of July, and I believe in the 6 days after my period I got pregnant one of only 3 times, this was the last 6 days in July. On Aug 2 the women in my family went out town and came home on the 6th of Aug, that night I noticed my BB's were EXTREMELY sore, I brush it off, then a few nights later I was cooking a regular meal and had to go hug the toilet. I was thinking something was up, but was kept ignoring it. Then on the 18th i finnaly took a test, it was +, so i went and got 2 more, both ++. Would I have started having symptoms within a week and a half after getting preg? Or was I farther along than I thought? I am now beginging to think that I ovulate imediately following my period. Any ideas?

Schilton9: In terms of possible length of time between discontinuing birth control & ovulation/conception, my personal experience tells me it doesn't matter how long you've been on birth control or how long you're off it. I had been on birth control for 12 years, stopped it in the middle of July 2009 & had conceived by the end of the month.

Chicanna09 | April 25 , 2010 2:12 PM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Ultrasounds -- your baby could be measuring behind or ahead -- so they are not the greatest tool to tell you when you conceived... To get when you ovulated -- look at a calendar and count back 38 weeks...that will bring you to your approximate Ovulation date... if you count back 40 weeks, that will be approximately the time you started your last period. Hope this helps.

I'm new to this site, just trying things out. I stop taking BC in April and was 4 days late, but eventually got my period. Now trying again this month, but my doctor reassured me that I did not need to worry or contact her unless we didn't have any luck for 6 months.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

TTC is usually a lot harder than Hollywood makes it look! Going off BC messed up my body for a few cycles. The pill really screwed me up. My period was 2 weeks late consistently, I would have 6-week cycles, with no clue when I was ovulating. With both my pregnancies, the ONLY way for me to know if/when I was ovulating was to buy an ovulation kit. I'm glad I did, because it turns out I was ovulating several days later than what "the norm" is. I also gave my body about a month being off the pill to try to regulate my cycle before ttc. Also start taking your prenatal vitamins once you're off the pill, so your baby will have a head start when you do conceive. GOOD LUCK!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Wife4ayear. I am so happy I read your post. I just got off BC in FEB and it totally messed up my cycle. I did not get cycle for a month (MARCH) and than got it (April) and than two weeks late getting the next one in May. My doctor said that it is normal to be inconsistent and that many women do not even get their cycle for 3-6 months. We decided to start trying last month .My cycle has been so crazy that I decided to buy an ovulation test and still no happy face after a week and a half of trying after my cycle. I guess my body is not ovulating at the "normal" time so I will now continue to test and wait. :)

shellyhepee | June 30 , 2010 12:06 AM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Vickybran the same has happened to me since going off of BC. My cycle still is not 100% normal, but it is getting there slowly. I am learning patience and if you are concerned I would recommend seeing your doc again. I wanted to make sure everything was okay in terms of horomone levels and my reproductive organs, and thankfully it was. It seemed that my body needed a little kick of progesteron to get it going again and it was a pill taken once a day for ten days. Also, I have started using a taking my BBT and it helps me figure out when I am ovulating. I forget who on here recommended the site fertilityfriend.com, but it is really helpful. At first when I started taking my BBT I couldn't figure it out or understand how it helped, but the website is a tracker and has had a lot of helpful information that has helped me to really figure it out. I would recommend it. My husband and I have just seriously started trying and so hopefully it all works out and I end up pregos. Good luck Vickybran!

Doctors can't know exactly when ovulation - and conception - occur. That is part of the reason they use the date of your last menstual period - that is a date they can be 100% certain on.

I'm not late yet but am really anxious and so I took a HPT today (that advertises 6 days before missed period) and it was negative. I'm supposed to start on Nov. 1st. Should I try to test again? Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Greetings all :) I'm new to the nest and the bump. I just had a couple of questions. 1. I've been on BC for 11years now and my hubby and I want to start trying this year to have our first one :) We're both going to be 30 this year. So I guess my questions is when do I need to come off the BC and have it out my system in order to start TTC?? 2. Are there any good tools or books that I can use to to make this more understandable?! I guess I'm just confused b/c neither of us have ever done this.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Hi ladies! I am new as of today to thebump :) my dh and i have been ttc since 5/10. I am EXTREMELY irregular and always have been..... going as long as 8mos without a period. I have been seeing a RE for about 3mos now and am on my first round of clomid. my nurse wanted me to try it out this month to see how my body reacts and then we would check in next month and if necessary start using an OPK. Well, I got a little impatient and bought CBE ovulation tests. with the information i had about my temp change i checked and sure enough the clomid has seemed to work in getting me to ovulation. i had a LH surge so dh and i did the deed a few times within a couple of days. i am not getting my hopes up so as to not be disappointed since it is only my first round on clomid and probably the first time i've even ovulated since may of last year! anyway, i am enjoying reading everyone's posts and am hoping to find much love and support here :) that said, i just watched The Great Sperm Race on youtube and it is AWESOME! Stuff I already know but it is portrayed in such a great way. a definite MUST WATCH!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Since we are all on this site for the same reasons I figure I would ask you all about this situation rather than anyone else because they all looked at me like I was stupid lol.... my dh and i have been ttc for 8 months now. it gets very discouraging at times but i stay positive. i had went and talked to my doctor and he had put me on metformin. to help me ovulate well i missed a whole cyle and i never had that happen to me before so he took me off it the end of october. i had my cycle 2 weeks after i stopped taking it. i had my cycle in december and now again my cycle was to start jan 9 2011 and it has not come , i took two test and they are negative just like last time. but then on jan 18 while my husband and i were doing the deed i had a bunch of milky and stretchy which i believe to be cervical mucous come out. my dh was kind of grossed out by it, i called the doctor the next day to see if thats what he thought it was and he said more than likely since i missed my start date i was probably ovulating and the 19th would be my peak fertility day. so we did the deed again. and today im feeling a little crampy. so im not sure whats going on. i just hope that we can get pregnant soon, we both are anxious

Dont get discouraged. This baby is just making you really work for him/her haha. Well Im 22 and TTC. My husband and I are thrilledI with the thought of our own child. So exciting. well I thought since im young my mom, dad, and husband parents are VERY fertile that If I put my mind to something it would happen. I never thought I would have to work for a baby it just comes so easy. You hear all the time people get pregnant with pre cum, and not even trying. Well not the case with me. We started trying Nov 2010. I took my IUD out in Nov 16 and had my period right after (never had a baby) then Decembers period came. then January's, and now February's. :( sucks. I thought I would for sure be pregnant by now. 3 months when you are TTC seems like an eternity. every little symptom i question. which I hate that I put that much stress into it because I know that can play a factor in not getting pregnant to. I have tried everything we have sex all the time. i prop by butt up on a pillow leave it in all night. but I figure I have to work for it. Im sorry you have been trying for 8 months. It will happen and it will be the PERFECT time. BABY DUST to all. I hope all of us trying to conceive gets preggers SOON!! :D

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

I know that ovulation can be hard to track down. Or even when you track down the exact moment you still don't get it right. It can become very frustrating. I get how it works, but don't understand why "I" can't get it right. I am trying to conceive after a loss at 6 weeks. It just seems so crazy to me that we got pregnant without really trying and now that we are trying it just isn't happening for us. So I think I am going back to not trying. I am going to try to focus on eating healthy and exercising regularly. And maybe it will happen. I do know that it will happen when it happens, but I want it to happen NOW!! LOL :)

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

For me I took out my iud nov 16th 2010. we waited a month to try to have my cervix thicken. We tried very hard in december. had sex almost every day. propped the bum up on pillows left it in. Jan 9th i started my period :( that was kind of sad. so jan we tried again all the same stuff but didnt put to much pressure on it. Feb 4th I found out i was 3 weeks pregnant. the pee tests wouldnt work. I took a HPT tuesday. negative. went and had a blood test thursday 2 of them and they were positive. saturday i took another Hpt and it was Negative, i was so confused so i went and got 2 more blood test they were positive. we told our friends and family, they were thrilled as were we. Sunday night i started bleeding. brown. didnt think much. until it turned red and started clotting. i called the ER and they said to come in. got there at 2 left at 7. they did all kinds of test and said i was having a miscarriage. i was beyond devastated i went through so many emotions. i never thought this would ever happen to me. My advice is to wait until you miss your period then take a test a week after. i prob would have never even knew i was pregnant and gone threw this loss. I tracked my ovulation on my phone and on Google,. it just says basics of the best time to try and we did. dont count on you being exactly 14 days, everyone is different. just have sex all the time, make it fun. leave the sperm in, prop your bum up and i think you would be good to go. well it worked for me anyway.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

I'm new to all of this but my last period was on Feb. 3rd. I started feeling like my ears were plugged last week and was light headed and dizzy. we had sex last Sunday but not sure if anything happens that fast. I went to the dr on Friday and the pregnancy test was negative. he wants me to go back this friday for another test. We ttc this past weekend as well because I was due to ovulate. I only feel tired but no other symptoms besides the fatigue and slight light-headedness. Any thoughts?

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

My best advice that I could possibly pass on to anyone is to read the book recommended by many others on this site is "Taking Charge of your Fertility:... For instance, I believed in the fact that you ovulate 14 days after the first day of your period... not necessarily true!!! I ovulate on day 17... it has been so empowering to be able to know when I am ovulating and to truly understand my body! It seems hard at first, and beyond your ability but it will be worth it, I am so amazed! Hopefully I will be able to conceive quickly now that I know when I ovulate...

Sorry I have a question, I'm new to this so here goes, someone please help!! What should I do and should I talk to my dr about using clomid?? Please help, I wanna be a mommy so bad. (: thanks gals!!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

For all you ladies with irregular cycles...I have only had my period about 4 times since coming off bc last April. Got pregnant at week 9 of one cycle but had MC. Since my cycle is so irregular I wasn't too interested in ovulation kits because I would need to take them for over a month $$$ there is a saliva predictor (ovulite $30) that you can use to predict ovulation and it is reusable. I started using that and taking vitex (supplement to regulate cycle) and it told me I ovulated! Now waiting to take my first pregnancy test. I will let you know if it worked.

ok i have a question. my hubbie & i finnaly got preggersthis past dec. after trying 4 a yr. at week 9 it stopped developing but my body refused to naturally misscarry & they had to give me a d&e at almost 13 weeks. as a result the doc didn't want us to try again until this july 2 give my body a chance to heal. i usualy ovulate 10 days after my cycle starts but will this have changed that? my cycles have been off track scince it happened & i used to be very regular. i realy don't want it to take another year. we have 2 boys already that are 2 &1/2 yrs apart & wanted them all 2 b close in age but there will b a 5yr difference now with the difficult conception & misscarrage. any suggestions?

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Hi everyone, I am new here after getting really frustrated and impatient :( My DH and I have been ttc since the new year with no luck. DH wants us to just have fun and not think too much about trying, so I havent been tracking ovulation per se, although I always have a rough idea when in might be... I am actually quite clueless about when the best time to have sex is and dont want to start geting OPKs because DH thinks its too 'clinical'. I used the ov calendar here and tried to predict when I would ovulate during my 32 day cycle. it said on day 18. I had sex on day 15 and 16 and also on 21. Have I totally missed the best day?

Hi everyone. My husband and I got our first postive pregnancy test this morning. Very excited! I highly recommend getting the ovlulation test sticks. I have longer cycles, 33-34 days, and had I gone with the ovulation calculator, we would have totally missed my ovulation time. It came 5 days before the calculator said. Using the test sticks, we got pregnant on the first try.

Hi everyone - for those having trouble - have you looked into Natural Family Planning? My husband and I use this method (although we aren't ttc just yet) and it has really helped me understand my cyle, which can be different from month to month. When we do decide we are ready... I'll know right when I am ovulating in that particular cycle.

Ovulation is the process in a female's menstrual cycle by which a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and discharges an ovum (also known as an oocyte, female gamete, or casually, an egg). Ovulation also occurs in the estrous cycle of other female mammals, which differs in many fundamental ways from the menstrual cycle. The time immediately surrounding ovulation is referred to as the ovulatory phase or the periovulatory period & A conception device is a medical device which is used to assist in the achievement of a pregnancy, often, but not always, by means other than sexual intercourse or NI. I am totally confused about how early you can find out your pregnant. If you have a 28 day cycle (ovulate aprox 14 days after the start of your period and getting your next one in aprox 14 days) would you miss that very next period (2 weeks after ovulation)? Or would it be the following period you would miss (4 weeks after ovulation and conceiving)?

Did anyone have signs that they were pregnant a week before being able to take a HPT? What were the signs and how soon did they show up for you? I have no idea if I'm actually having signs this early or creating them myself out of want/need.

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Hi everyone im new to the site. My husband & I are TTC & its hard knowing when I ovulate I just had my period Oct 26, Nov 4-5 (not sure when it stopped) we made love the day after it ended& make love every time hes home. (which is mostly weekends) im just curious to know how can I track it & know for sure the days I ovulate! Pls help any advice is helpful.

ceballosyc | November 25 , 2011 1:24 AM

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

cevallosyc: You should try charting your cycles. It may seem a little confusion and like it may be too much work, but it is worth it. Go to tcoyf.com for more information. Charting (temperature, cervical fluid, and cervical position) has helped me realize I don't ovulate 14 days after my period started. I ovulate around day 20 of my cycle. Every woman is different. Now my husband and I know when we should have sex to maximize our chances of getting pregnant. Hoping this month is our month as we timed it the day I was ovulating. Good luck to you!!!

Q&A: Ovulation and conception basics?

Has anyone ever heard of or used the iPhone app called PinkPad? I've been tracking my period in it for almost 6 months and it never seems to be quite right but pretty close. I was just wounding in a phone app can tell you when you're ovulating with the info it has on my period? My fiancé and I are working on getting pregnant, and I was supposed to start today according to the PinkPad, and yesterday I spotted. Spotting has never occurred before. Also, do I have to have sex the day or days I'm ovulating to get pregnant? How would I calculate when I ovulated last month?

I am having the same problem calculating right now. First time on this website, so any help would be greatly appreciated... I was active on Nov. 1st and Nov. 10/11th. It's hard to calculate my period in Oct. cause I also spotted. I am guessing the 24th. On the first we used the pull out method. On the 10th and 11th, we went full out. Which did I conceive from? I am getting mixed signals, the doctor and all the different online calculators place me in the middle. Is there a better way to narrow this down? Many of your answers are very helpful, but my arrow still isn't pointing full right or left yet. :( Help please.
