Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

If I am getting my period 28-30 days since being off birth control, can I assumed I am ovulating regularly?

Re: If I am getting my period 28-30 days since being off birth control, can I assumed I am ovulating regularly?

The Bump Expert Generally, if your menstrual cycles are regular, they are presumably ovulatory. But, it is not absolutely conclusive, as subtle abnormalities can occur within cycles. Over-the-counter testing with ovulation predictor kits can be use to verify that the LH (lutenizing hormone) surge signaling ovulation has occurred. If in doubt, consult a specialist. (Look for one certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.)

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I stopped taking my pill due to an insurance hiccup and thought I was in the clear and conceived off the pill less than one month. Everyone is different, but you might as well start trying!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

Everyone is different. I have been off the pill for 3 months and we have been TTC since than. You have to follow your ovulation chart(record everything) and research tips on ways to up your chances on getting pregnant. That's what we are starting to do and my hopes are high. Remember it's not all about you, he has to change/do some things as well. Good luck :)

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I don't know what's happening with my body because right after I stopped taking BC my first cycle was 28 days, the one after that was 42 days, and now its been 59 days and my AF has not shown up, and PT are all negative. I am so confused and upset, and my appointment with my OB is not until 3 weeks from now.

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I wish there was one concrete answer to this question. I am 24 years old and I have been on BC for 7 years. I keep hearing from my friends who are in their 30s "oh you have nothing to worry about, you have time to TTC" or "it doesn't matter how long you have been on BC because you are young" than I hear just randomly that BC is just a hormone and once you stop taking it you will be back to ovulating again!!! I just wish there was one answer.....I just want to know if BC really delays the process of TTC after you get off of it...

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

My husband and I have been married for 3 years now and I have had the Mirena IUD in place for about 2 years. When I discussed my beliefs with my gyn, she told me that this would be the best fit for what we wanted. We wanted to wait another year before having children, but... Now, i've been nauseous for 6 days and the smell of coffee makes me cringe! I have been urinating more than normal as well. I took a HPT on Saturday morning and it came back neg., but I just have this feeling that it may be too soon to tell. Since I don't get a period regularly so I have no idea when to even take another test. I am worried since I still have the IUD in that it could cause a miscarriage or birth defects. I am calling the doctor first thing in the morning to see about a blood test. I'm partially excited, but mostly scared and impatient at this point. My guess is that if I am pregnant, I'm about 2 weeks along... any other ideas or suggestions???

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I just had the Mirena removed. My first period lasted over a week! I was having symptoms of pregnancy also but the test (at GYN office) was negative. Dr told me the chance of an ectopic are higher with an IUD so watch out for pelvic pain.

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I am 25 years old and have been on and off birth control for the past 9 years. I have taken the Plan B pill close to 40 times. I got married last september and was worried that with my history of pill-taking it would be difficult for me to ovulate again and get pregnant. well here I am 6 months after going off the pill and i just found out im 6 weeks pregnant! So no I dont think birth control delays the process of TTC!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

As long as your periods are regular, I would say that you are ovulating regularly. Try a basal thermometer and ovulation test.

thequinos | February 09 , 2010 1:16 PM

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I wanted to answer this because I am getting a fairly regular period but am not ovulating (yet!) after going off the pill. I chart my basal temperature, among other signals, to understand when I'm ovulating. I currently chart for birth control...I have had 3 periods since going off birth control pills (took them for 7-ish years) and I have not ovulated once. That is called "anovulation." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anovulation It's a very common misconception to think that if you have a period, you are ovulating regularly. I would have thought so before reading a book called "Taking Control of Your Fertility" by Toni Welsch (I highly, highly recommend it!). It is about Fertility Awareness Method and can be read as a pregnancy achievement or birth control method. Taking my temperature and using that information with what I learned from the book, I can see that I do not ovulate. We want to start TTC in about 4 months, so I went off the pill 5 months ago. My doctor even says that it can take up to a year to ovulate regularly....or you can be like some of the women who responded or my girl friend who literally got pregnant 3 weeks after going off the pill!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I am in the same situation. I was on BC for quite some time and recently got married and went off BC in October and now my cycles have ranged from 28 days to 31 days to 32 days. My husband and I decided we want to start TTC however I am nervous about that I am not ovulating right. I have been getting random cramps which feels as though I am ovulating round that time of the month however am hoping it is not something else. I was going to try and OTC ovulation tests but not sure which one to buy. Did anyone else have cramping on the sides around ovulation time? Any suggestions on which OTC test to buy?

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

It took me a little over a year to have a regular cycle (with ovulation) after going off BC (l was on it for 2 years). At first my periods were roughly 2 months apart, now I am regular 28-30 days for the last 4 months and have been ovulating. It really does vary from person to person: some people can ovulate the month after stopping BC, others, like myself and a friend of mine, can take a year or more. I am hopeful that we will conceive soon!

I went of Birth Control pils in January after 13 years of taking them. My husband and i want to conceive this summer. I have not had a period since quitting BC. I am really nervous about how long this will take. It has been 2 and 1/2 months! I, too, wish I would have known this information before starting the pill.

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I am 27 and I was on birth control for 9 years. I have been off birth control now for almost a year. My periods were anywhere from 32-65 days. I went to the dr and she tested me to see if I was ovulated and I was not. She also tested me for PCOS and i do not have that. I just finished my first month on Clomid and I did not ovulate. I will be starting my 2nd month as soon as I get my period again. Everyone is completely different!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I just went off the pill in January after I got my period on 1/27. 30 days later I got my period on 2/26, and this round, I'm still waiting after 35 days. I'm hoping things go back to 30ish days as my fiance and I are going to start ttc a month from today!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

The cramping you feel in the middle of your cycle signals ovulation. It's called middlesmertz. I felt it every month when I was not on BC. I have been contemplating exactly when I should stop taking the pill. I'm getting married next April and we want to TTC right after. I don't want to end up with a bunch of breakouts before the wedding. Should I go ahead and stop taking it now and let my body have time to get back into it's own rhythm or wait til closer to our wedding? All I know to answer everyone else's concerns is that every body is different. A normal cycle is a 28-35 days. I'm not an expert in women's health, but that's some of what I know from nursing school. Also have those of you that are having crazy cycles talked to your doctors? I would think they would have been able to talk to you about these things before stopping BC. I know it's virtually impossible to get appts most of the time without an emergency, but they should be able to answer and help somehow. That's why we pay them so much.

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I have found a lot of information and help regarding this information in the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. I think every woman should read it and learn the ins and outs of how her ovulation and menstural cycle actually works. You can get a period without it being from ovulation - but the only way to tell is with the tests mentioned or if you "chart" and know what to look for. It's a great read!!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I was on an IUD for approx. 5 years, after removal, I began taking seasonique because of a hormonal imbalance. I took the 3 month pack to see if there were any visible results, there werent. So after the 3 month pack I stopped taking bc completely. I began my first cycle on April 4th, a 4 day cycle, we found out now that we are pregnant!!!! Each person's body is different, however, I suggest that you at least give your body a cycle or two to get regulated, then see if or when you are ovulating.

jennifermrx | May 06 , 2010 12:37 PM

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I went to my doctor last week because we are ttc. However, I have been on the pill for 8 years. I have been off it now for 3 weeks. My doctor was insistent that we do not try to get pregnant until after I have had 2 consecutive "normal" cycles. I have always been irregular with having them every 2 weeks. According to my doctor you will have a much healthier pregnancy that has no hormones that your babies do not need. Plus he recommended that I take prenatal vitamins for 3 months to avoid birth defects. I'm not saying that it will avoid them completely but it gives a lower risk of the possibility. So we are waiting for both that way we can have the healthiest pregnancy we can give our little bundle of joy.

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

No. One cannot assume that since you are having your period every month that you are ovulating. There are still periods that are hypo ovulating or anovulating. Especially for those who have been on BCP for a while it may take months before you get a ovulatory period.

I stopped taking BC back in Feb this year. Cycles all out of whack. Last AF was second week in May.... Today is day 36! I feel like any day now it will show up. I also hardly ever had break outs prior to BC.. lately it's like I'm back in middle school. UGH. Ready to have things back in line... Any one else go through this? Suggestions?

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

Hi! I am having the same issue and although I just came off the pill last month (after 10 years of taking it consistently,) I am at day 32 and nothing! I am very nauseous and wish it would just come already. I know the nausea sounds suspicious but there's no possible way whatsoever that I am pregnant already so I don't know what's going on. My husband and I want to try to conceive starting next month so I am hoping my cycle returns by then. Ugh - I know what you're going through! I know they say this is a normal experience but it's still frustrating and a little scary.

I was on seasonale for a lonng time and bc for probably 10 plus years. I now average at a 49 day cycle and my doc wont help!! I have been off since feb and we have been TTC. I am so hopeless at this point. She was going to put me on clomid to help but decided that we should wait a lot longer. Its so hard when you are TTC and of course guys dont understand fertility. My hubby is planning baby room stuff and everything already and I just feel like worthless. I am going to see a new MD because I have been told that i may not be ovulating since they are that far apart! Anyone else had a similar situation and if so what did you do!?!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I was on the Depo injection for 2.5 years after we were married, and stopped taking it just over a year ago, in July 2009. I've had 1 period (in January) since then, and spotting for a day a couple of times since then, and that's it. I've taken numerous pregnancy tests, including some with the doctor, and they are all negative. If I'd known this, I'd never have taken the injections. Will I ever be able to conceive? My doctor says it's probably just stress, but I've been over a year without a period, so I'm wondering how long to wait? The general rule of thumb here is they don't do testing until one has been trying to conceive for over 2 years. But without a period, I'm wondering if that's even possible? I know one can ovulate without a period, but I don't think I'm even doing that. I've been checking and I don't think I am. What can I do?! Help!!

JandPB | August 04 , 2010 8:10 AM

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

@JandPB, maybe you should try the over-the counter Ovulation kits to see if and when your ovulation. Also you should try charting your temp. Even though you haven't had a period just check it everyday and look for changes, maybe then you can find out id your ovulating, hopes that helps a little.

ShericeSteele | August 09 , 2010 4:50 PM

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I have heard from a friend of mine that it could take up to 6 months for you to conceive if you have been on BC ... My husband and I have been TTC going on 3 months now. I have been off BC now for that long, though I have been on it for 7 years now. My cycle has been 33-35 days, which is hard for me to grasp since being on BC it was always 28 days. SO here I am now thinking that last month I was pregnant, when in reality my "5 week" mark is when AF would show up. I am grateful I have not had any problems with hair loss, or out of whack cycles, but I am just very aware now of what my body is trying to tell me. I am not making myself go crazy with charts and temps, because not for nothing, how did our grandmothers and elders do it? Just relax and it'll happen. That's my new view of it. I'll only start getting worried if nothing happens within a year of now. Then and only then will l start calling doctors.

I was on birth control for two years, and before I got on it, my periods were exactly 28 days apart from my first period. I stopped taking it at the end of January/beginning of February 2010, and since then I have not had a regular period. BC messed my body up so bad that I will not ever go back on it nor would I recommend anyone to take it.

I was on BC for around 10 years and I stop in 05/2010. I have had a regular period every month with an average of a 27 day cylce. So really it just depends on the person on whether you will have problem getting your period after you stop BC. Hope this helps

I was on BC since I was 17, I am ow 25 turning 26 next month. My husband and I are TTC, its only been a month of trying, we didn't get pregnant this month but are staying positive and most importantly just trying to relax about it, everyone has told me to relax and it'll happen when its meant to, and im okay with that (for right now anyways)..my period came 2 days earlier than normal (from when I was on BC), so its good that my cycle is on track however..I am bleeding like crazy, I've never bled this much before in my life..is this normal after stopping BC?

babyCarter7259...I'm experiencing the same thing with heavy bleeding after being on BC for years. However, my cycles have also been hugely irregular after going off BC. Since coming off BC I've had a 4wk, 6wk, 5 wk, and now 8wk gap between periods...still no period this cycle. Going to the doctor next week and very anxious for the appointment but trying to stay calm. Good luck TTC!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

so i've been off BC since september '10 i had two periods...one in sept. one in oct. and then nothing. we took home tests and had a blood work-up done....not pregnant. at first my thyroid was a little out of whack and some crappy doctor put me on levothyroxine to adjust my levels. the only problem...she didn't check all the thyroid levels just TSH. weight gain, heart palpitations, sleeplessness among other things. needles to say i quit taking the meds. so i went back to my family doc in jan '11 he checked my thyroid completely...it was fine......but still no AF. my doc says my last gyno prescribed the wrong dosage of BC and if m period doesn't come back after six months they're going to start clomid. is anyone else having problems like this?

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

Based on why my OBGYN has told me, just because you are having your period does NOT mean you are ovulating. There could be additional underlying conditions that would cause such a situation. I would suggest tuning into other signs of ovulation other than relying solely on the fact that you are menstrating every month. I was on BC for over 7 years and the first time off of it, I had a 30 day cycle, but the next cycle was crazy. It can take some time to establish a regular cycle and even to then begin ovulating. Hands down the best advice I can offer is to read the book 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility'. It has been so empowering to learn about my body and the multitude of signals that will allow you to know that A) you are ovulating but B) WHEN you are ovulating. If I ever have a daughter, I am going to make sure she understands and doesn't believe half of the myths out there (I wish someone would've opened my eyes sooner)!

I was only on mirena for a period of a few months, but had terrible cramps and ovarian cysts. I stopped bc and started charting as a form of natural birth control. I am so glad i did! The creighton method is what i am using through natural family planning, and it has worked so far! What i love is that if i choose to ttc, i will know my most fertile days and have a much higher rate of success. Please, anyone looking for a way to either concieve or prevent, look into the creighton method of natural family planning. It works! (And with no nasty chemical side effects!)

I don't think you can defo know if you are. I also came off BCP three months ago. I had my first period after 29 days and assumed i was going back to normal. I began charting and had an anovulatory cycle that lead up to my second period at 34 days. Now in month 3, i am charting and because of that along with noting my CM, i know i ovulated. I think everyone is different so it may be a good time to start taking your BBT and checking your CM, it's the only sure way to know. Good luck!!!

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I've been off bc for 4 months and still no period. Went to my obgyn over a month ago and she insured me that my blood work was consistant with being close to ovulation. Took a hpt last week and it was negative...this is driving me crazy! I wish if I'm not pregnant I could at least get my period back so I know I have a chance of getting pregnant. The most upsetting part is that we paid 300 for the dr. to tell us I am fine and nothing has changed, she wouldn't even give me anything to help get my periods back! Anyone been in a similar situation & if so, how did you deal?

Q&A: Ovulation after birth control?

I been on bc for 10 years I go off sept 2011. I took a test mid september and got two lines then I got AF 5 days later. My cycle was 30 days. So I'm to believe I had a chemical pregnancy. I just realized this weekend. We are on our 4 month of TTC and my cycle is 28 days. Not sure when I ovulate cus I been irrgeular the prior mnths. So I started charting temp.. Don't think it's working cus my temp has been the same or 7 days. I just figure if we do it every other day we should be okay. We are just starting to get ansty cus we want to be parents so bad. So hopefully soon it will happen
