Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

Is there any kind of diet or food that helps with fertility?

Re: Is there any kind of diet or food that helps with fertility?

The Bump Expert

There are many fad diets that have been purported to assist fertility; however, none are substantiated. The best rule of thumb is to get adequate caloric intake and maintain an ideal body weight for pregnancy. Both too high and too low weights are associated with reproductive difficulty. An body mass index between 19 and 28 is ideal.

Women attempting pregnancy should also be sure to get adequate folic acid intake. The amount in prenatal vitamins is sufficient unless you've had a previous baby with a spinal cord intake. In this case, more may be required.

re: Q: Diet for fertility?

I've heard from friends that yams, olives and orange juice all help with TTC. Anyone else heard this? Or are my friends full of hot air?

KellB916 |

re: Q: Diet for fertility?

coconut oil, apple cider vinegar (helps to regulate your body's ph) avocados, lots of fruits and veggies, eggs, honey and cinnamon. stay away from processed foods!

rlee314 |

re: Q: Diet for fertility?

All of the suggested foods above are good ideas, but none of them will help fertility on their own except that you'll presumably be eating a healthier diet. The only thing you can do that's certain to help is maintain your body's health in whatever way you can. Food, exercise, all that good stuff. The better your body's working overall, the better the individual parts will work.

Manny506- You can buy them over the counter and I have had recommendations of Nature's Care (Brown bottle with a woman holding her belly) or Stewarts (my cousin who has 5 kids recommended this) also, check this site out. http://www.cafemom.com/dailybuzz/pregnancy/5815/Prenatal_Vitamins_Prescription_vs_Over_the_Counter

refering to above, about regulating body Ph by eating coconut oil and drinking apple cider vinigar. You are supposed to do this before every meal, not just on the whim. 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, as a solid, not liquid, and one oz of apple cider vinigar.

I've read that lowering your alcohol and caffeine intake helps. I guess basically if you're trying to conceive then you should be eating as if you were already pregnant. But no specific foods will aid in conception.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I am a registered Dietitian and what I tell patients who are TTC is that A. Make sure your weight is not too high or too low. BMI of 21-25 is ideal- do not get lower than mid 19's or above 28 or you may begin to see trouble (to figure BMI: weight in KG (divide # by 2.2) divided by height in meters sqared.) B. Make sure that you are getting enough Healthy Fats in your daily intake in order to help with hormone production- best choices are Avocado, Peanut Butter, Olive Oil, Nuts. C. NO CAFFEINE, NO ALCOHOL as these can affect your chances of getting pregnant and staying pregnant. D. Drink plenty of water and get plenty of Rest. E. Take a pre-natal vitamin with Folic Acid. F. Eat Organic as much as possible- wash pesticides off of your fruit and veggies as much as possilbe. G. If you are gluten/wheat intolerant- adhearing to a strict Gluten Free diet will help your chances of conceiving. Hope that helps.

What about diets for people with PCOS???? Is there anything you should eat when you have that??? I have read that organic food is the way to go, and low carb, but I found low carb only worsened the effects of my PCOS.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

In regard to PCOS: increase your protein and healthy fat intake and switch to complex carbohydrates as opposed to simple carbs. (Whole wheat, brown rice, etc.) This helps you fight the carb cravings that tend to accompany the insulin resistance. Don't focus on lowering carb intake, just figure out your protein and work the rest of your meal around that instead of the other way around.

I read a really good book called fertility foods by Jeremy Groll. It gives a few recipes, but they're not especially great for picky eaters- sadly like me. It does divide food into categories though, which is helpful. I think I found it at half-price books, but here's the link on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Fertility-Foods-Optimize-Ovulation-Conception/dp/0743272811

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

i dnt think that any food increases your chance of conceiving, but my doc did tell me that adding yams to your diet BEFORE you concieve will increase your chances of having twins. There is something in yams that mimicks a certain hormone in your body. This causes your body to produce more of the hormone that researchers have found causes twins. Good luck everyone.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I started taking a multivitam with folic acid and it seems to be helping my overall health, so I'm pretty happy about that, it even cleared up my acne! I'm a vegetarian so I do eat a mostly plant based diet, and go organic when possible. Did not know about yams and twins though. I kinda wouldnt mind getting both kids out of the way in one go (we only want 2) so I might just start eating more yams.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I did a complete 28 day detox from Flora about 2 months before we started TTC. I got pregnant on the first month we started trying. I'm not at my perfect weight like a lot of other people are saying either. My BMI is not in the "ideal range". I try to eat as healthy as I can with some exceptions here and there to keep me happy. I get in exercise when I can, but don't push myself like a mad woman! I live a balanced life and TRY to stay stress free. I did however lose the pregnancy. There was no baby in the gestational sac and I had a miscarriage. I am doing another 3 day cleanse to prep my body again to try again after this cycle. All I want everyone to realize is, you don't have to have the perfect body and the perfect BMI and the perfect diet to get pregnant. You have to trust what you body needs and also what it wants to have a stress-free TTC time. Good luck ladies! <3 and hugs!

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I must be the exception to the BMI, under weight rule because I weighed 100 lbs when I got pregnant with my son and I'm 5'6". I got pregnant the first month we starting TTC. I think it's different for everyone. This sort of info could be very discouraging to someone who is TTC and doesn't have an ideal BMI. It's enough to stress over trying to get pregnant without the added stress over having to gain/lose weight in order to do so.

I agree with NSanders08 on the BMI deal, however, if TTC is proving difficult, weight is one of the first things you should look at if you are not in the ideal range. But because everyone carries their weight differently I wouldn't get hung up on that BMI number right out of the gate! And remember to stay stress free :)

There is some really interesting research done on women who were trying to conceive who substituted their daily coffee for black tea. One cup of black tea daily showed astounding evidence of doubling your chances of conception, and helped to lower chances of miscarriage. Apparently a natural chemical in black tea inhibits chromosomal abnormalities. I first read this in a book on conception, then looked it up online and found the case studies.

I have been reading a lot about Vitex and Maca. I have read that it's like "nature's Clomid." It helps to regulate your ovulation and all kinds of stuff by increasing progesterone. It is all natural. I am not sure if it works but I am about to start taking it. Oh and also they say that royal jelly which is a bee product is nutrient rich and can aid in healthy egg development. Guys can take it as an overall health suppliment.

One very important thing that is often overlooked is your thyroid. All women of child bearing age should have their TSH levels checked as abnormal levels can cause fertility issues, as well as miscarriages. Your TSH should be less than 2.5 before you become pregnant.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

We've been TTC for 8 months now and my naturopath recently introduced me to wild yams. I just thought I would share some information that I have learned to clear up some myths about the yams. The important thing to know is that there is a difference between the WILD YAMS of Africa which contain a chemical called diogenes. This is not the same as a yam that we would find in north America. This chemical used to be used as a form of birth control. I have been given a wild yam cream to use during the second half of my luteal phase to balance out my hormones because I have too much estrogen. Wild Yams help to stimulate progesterone (although I haven't been able to find hard evidence of it). Clearly wild yams must have some effect since they are commonly eaten in Africa and there are noticeable birth trends. However, this is because they are being eaten in the first half of the luteal phase. Anyway, despite the lack of evidence, I am still hoping that this solves my TTC woes. Some good nutritional tips though to help encourage hormone balance: Days 1 - 14: Fish Oil, Pumpkin Seeds, Flax Seeds, Grapefruit Days 15-28: Evening Primrose Oil, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds And everyday: whole milk products, low/no caffeine, low/no alcohol, low added sugars, lots of omega 3 and omega 6 products I've been using this diet for 3 months now. No BFP yet, but I am feeling more energetic.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

Hi there! Nourishing your body is the key. Having a crummy diet and adding in a 'miracle' food like yams will likely not achieve your goal of getting pregnant. Its what is eaten every day over time that builds the body and blood and also cleanses the body of toxins like heavy metals and hormone mimickers. Also, very important is the quality of food. If you are having trouble TTC, your hormones are likely not balanced. Conventional meat and dairy are laden with hormones. Cows are given hormones to keep them lactating, to make them grow quickly in a short amount of time, and who knows what other hormones for whatever reason. Also, starting with a healthy, nourishing diet now will give you the extra tools to create a smarter, healthier, stronger baby. A WORD ABOUT PRENATALS: Prenatals are great, as long as they are good quality. Getting your prenatals from big box stores is not going to give your body the optimal nutrition that quality, food-based vitamins will. Those chain store vitamins are synthetic, created in a lab. Our bodies don't utilize those synthetic nutrients like they do nutrients from food (for example, if the label says the calcium source is solely calcium carbonate, its junk - That is chalk, limestone, not the calcium that our bodies can use like the calcium in broccoli or almonds. You are literally wasting your money peeing out unmetabolized minerals). Our bodies evolved on food and know exactly what to do with it. For more info, or to contact me, visit www.getbalancedwellness.com. Cheers!

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I will recommend reading "The Tao of Fertility". That book is great! It talks about how food affects TTCing. It actually gives you a 28 day (or how long your cycle is) plan to get you pregnant. The first half you eat certain foods to recuperate from the blood lost during your period and to make your egg stronger, and the second half prepares the egg for implantation. It also includes, exercise recommendations and acupressure. Two of my friends, who had been trying for 6 months and a year, tried it and got pregnant in one month. I first did the detox, because I had been on birth control for almost 10 years, and then took the 28 day challenge... and guess what came out positive 3 weeks ago?? Yes we are pregnant!!! Give it a try!! I bet you will love reading it as much as I did. It's western meats eastern medicine.

I was on 6 different birth controls before TTC and they had my hormones all out of wack. I came across the fertiliTea website and thought it wouldnt hurt to try. I didnt want to be prescribed some kind of medication to get my cycle regulated. The FertiliTea is completely natural. This is what the site says about it: FertiliTea is the natural, healthful - and delicious - herbal tea designed to support the entire reproductive system and help increase your chances of conceiving. Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I've been eating healthier with fruit, veggies, & whole grains. But the big thing for me was quitting smoking, drinking, and caffeine. I feel so much better TTC.

Q&A: Eating certain foods to increase fertility?

I've been doing research! I've found studies that show that green tea helps (but only around one cup a day... more decreases your chances), red raspberry leaves (I am trying a tea for that, too), and of course eating healthier in general. My doctor told me that coconut oil helps, too :)

I'm not sure about the foods. They may work. I have been married for seven years and we have had our share. Never getting pregnant once. I took the geritol vitamin for a few weeks and now I am seven weeks pregnant.

This isn't necessarily scientific but a fun fact in which may act as a placebo more than anything but the origin of "honeymoon" was because after wedding, the couple would go away for "a moon" and the lady had to eat honey every day of the moon to increase fertility.....it's worth a shot even just for the romance factor!
