Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

I've hear that taking the Pill could raise my chances of having infertility problems. Is this true?

Re: I've hear that taking the Pill could raise my chances of having infertility problems. Is this true?

The Bump Expert

In the past, there was speculation that using the birth control pill could result in infertility. However, we know now that this is not true. Post-pill amenorrhea (the absence of a period) occurs about 0.7-0.8% of the time, and in general 50% of women conceive by three months after discontinuing the Pill. Post-pill amenorrhea is actually attributed to a thinning of the endometrium (uterine membrane), but this is generally restored in time, once your body resumes normal ovarian function, which was not happening while you were taking the Pill.

Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

I was on the pill for almost ten years, I took myself off it and in less than a month I am pregnant! I am also over 30, so from my experience the pill didn't cause any infertility.

Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

I was on the pill for 6 years, I got married last Spring and went off the pill in September '10, I still have not gotten a period. My doctor told me to wait it out that because I am young (24 years) and I shouldn't be worried.....I'm still worried. Before BC I had very regular cycles, I am a healthy weight, taking prenatals, maintaining a healthy diet - so it is strange to me that I haven't gotten a period yet. I am going to wait out the rest of this month and then perhaps try some natural remedies before considering "real" medication. I found some articles online that recommend acupuncture - I may give that a shot, is anyone else having the same problem? Or tried acupuncture?

Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

I was on the pill for about 12 years and just went off of it in July. The first month I got a period but got it at day 37 in my cycle. Freaked me out as I was used to those 28 day cycles. The second month I got it at day 36 and now it's day 39 and still no period. Took 2 pg tests and both were negative. I've heard that being on the pill can screw up your cycles, and may take time to ovulate "regularly", but have never heard of it causing infertility.

Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

I was on the Pill for over 10 years. I had amenorrhea and my husband and I struggled with infertility for about 5 or 6 years. We did not use any birth control at all during that entire time. As a RN, I think that it does depend on the woman and her own body. I thought I was infertile all the way through my 20's. I'm pregnant now at age 32. My doctor told me that I should be able to get pregnant right after I got off of the Pill but it didn't happen for me. We're all different!

Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

I was on the pill for 6+ years and came off in June. I didn't ever get a period, and after 6 mos was scheduling an appointment to go in to see my GYN to see if anything was "wrong" down there. I last had taken a pregnancy test on Nov. 1 when I had stomach flu, so the nurse said I should take another pregnancy test, and lo and behold -- I'm pregnant! Had my first doctor visit yesterday, and will have an ultrasound on Dec. 23, just in time to make the photos into a Christmas gift for the grandparents-to-be!

Q&A: Does taking the Pill raise my risk of infertility?

It is different for every woman. I have been off the pill for 8 months and have had only 2 periods. I went to an acupuncturist and she has helped immensely. I highly recommend going to an acupuncturist (just like any doctor you have to choose one that you feel comfortable with!) And a must is reading and studying "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler, MPH (http://www.tcoyf.com/). With these two powerful tools I hope to be preggars very soon. If you are not having regular periods and are taking longer than you wish to conceive please please please take my advice. You will not be sorry. There is a lot of information out there that can be confusing and even inaccurate. TCOYF will help you navigate through it all.
