Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Why might I have an ectopic pregnancy?

Re: Why might I have an ectopic pregnancy?

The Bump Expert

If you’re worried, keep in mind that a diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is extremely rare. And as with any miscarriage, it’s not your fault. Sometimes there's no reason or explanation for it; it simply just happens. Otherwise, those who were diagnosed with ectopic pregnancies usually had previous medical issues and 50 percent had a previous tubal disease. Damage to your fallopian tubes can be a result of STDs (i.e. Chlamydia and gonorrhea), endometriosis (when similar lining of your uterus is found somewhere else in the body), appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix), pelvic surgery, or exposure to diethylstilbestrol (a drug that used to prevent miscarriage but went off the market in 1997 due to health complications). Women who conceive after getting their tubes tied or untied are also at risk. Finally, using infertility drugs or IVF (in vitro fertilization) also slightly increases your chances.

Even if you've had any of these previous diseases or procedures, remember that doesn’t mean you'll necessarily have an ecptoic pregnancy. But if you’ve already had an ectopic pregnancy, you're more likely to have another and should be monitored while TTC. Keep in mind that many women diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy have healthy babies later on -- just make sure you're emotionally and physically prepared for your next try.

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

In April my DH and I had an Ectopic Pregnancy~My OB/GYN said that it was due to endometriosis (spelling?). Now we have had the go ahead to TTC again. I'm super scared that it will happen again, but so badly want a child. I am on my second dose of Clomid and am praying for a healthy pregnancy!

Scary Stuff!!!

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had an ectopic on Sept.4 and here in a couple weeks we will be trying again. I agree that it is very very scary and I am starting to get nervous because I can't imagine going through all of this again. I will start back on the same dose of Clomid that I got pregnant on so hopefully it will work and everything will be healthy!

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

How long were you on Clomid before getting pregnant?

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Ok...I think this is really weird!!! I clicked on your picture and found out you were married on November 10, 2007.........I was married on that exact date too.....and we both have had ectopics! Crazy.

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Ok....Sorry....Mistake on the wedding date!!! I'm new to this stuff......Sorry

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I had finished my second cycle on Clomid. My dr said that the good news is that i CAN get pregnant. It will just be a lot harder now with only one tube...my completely ruptured and had to be removed. Have you started trying again yet? It's nice to have someone to talk to about this!

jennademerly |

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I did not have a complet rupture....they gave me a shot of methotrexate which was the most heart wrenching experience I have ever had. My dr. told me the same thing about getting prego too. "At least you can get PREGNANT" I think those words have come to haunt me. We started trying in July again and have had no luck....I switched Dr. due to insurance reasons and this Dr. has put me on Clomid....I am on my second dose of that....I just recently went into have them check my progesterone(sp?) and they told me it was low...so don't really know what that means now!!! He did say that he will start me on Femara on my next cycle. I'm glad that he's moving fast....My biggest fear is to never be able to have kids. Are you going back on Clomid?

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I have heard of that shot-I almost wish I had that because going through the horrible cramping then having surgery was awful. Not that it wasn't awful for you..I didn't mean that! haha. How did the shot work? My cramping started on a friday then stopped for an entire week and I go back and think "ok, if i would have gone into the dr earlier maybe i could have had the shot and i wouldn't have had to have surgery"Yeah, I actually got my provera today since I haven't started my period yet and this medicine makes me have one. As soon as I start I will call and get back on clomid. My first cycle on clomid I also had really low progesterone levels but started my own period which was good. I got pregnant on the second cycle. What dosage are you on? Even if you have low progesterone levels there still is a chance. What is Femara? We probably won't be starting to try until 2nd week of November, I was in such a bad mood last week because I have been getting all of my bills from my surgery and it's just hitting me like, "I can't go through this again" I mean, I don't know people have multiple miscarriages and continue to go though all of this. I'm excited to start trying again, but so nervous. When will you take a preg. test? I really hope that it works out for you! I know I have said it before, but talking with you has helped me so much-there is hardly any info out there on this and it helps talking about similar problems!!!

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

As crazy as this might sound, but my cousin told me on the Wednesday before I found out I was prego, that she is prego. So I look at her and think that is what I would look like, if the pregnancy was healthy. I sometimes don't even want to be around her for that fact. I know that sounds selfish and mean, but it brings up way too many emotions seeing her prego. Breast Cancer freaks me out, my mother is a 3 year survivor and both of my grandmothers have had it too. So I think it's kind of ironic that they are putting me on a breast cancer drug. I asked my mom what kind of drug she was on, but it wasn't the same. So it will be interesting. I was on 100mg (i'm assuming mg) of Clomid. Yes I thought I was healthy too. Until they diagnosed me with endometriosis. Then it was down hill from there. Now I'm taking fertility drugs to help me along. It's crazy what GOD gives you.

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

this thing is loopy....one minute I can send a message the next time I can't, if you look at my profile, i put my email in it, so that you can email me if you would like! I'm sorry all those emotions came to you last night. You didn't deserve it, but it is the healing process, I found that the more I talked about it the more comfortable I was with it. My family has been super supportive with it. Good Luck with the weather! Tailgating sounds fun! I have to work on Saturday, and then I'm cleaning house on Sunday! Ick ---NOT MY FAVORITE JOB---

re: Q: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I also got married on November 10, 2007 in New Orleans. How insane is that?? I'm seeing the doctor this Tuesday to hear the official results of the pregnancy exam. I got two BFN and today got a BFP, but I'm also scared of having an ectopic. So far, it seems like I have all the symptoms of one - cramping on one side, light bleeding, etc. Wish me luck!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I've gone through the same thing! We deciced to TTC and got pregnant right away only to be diagnosed with ectopic a week later. They couldn't see it and gave me the Methotrexate. When my levels didn't drop, they did another ultrasound an found the baby in my uterus. Unfortunately, we worked too quickly and because of the previous shot, I had to have another to fully terminate the pregnancy. It kills me to know that it could have been a healthy pregnancy. My sister in law and cousin were pregnant at the time too. I know how you felt and don't let anyone make you feel badly about your negative feelings. I'm off of work right now because I'm just not dealing well with it. :( Now we have been TTC for the past 3 months and nothing yet. Every month I go into a new cycle though...Optimistic to happy, to anxious to panicy to depressed once we have a negative test. How come teenagers get pregnant so easily but when you want to, you just can't? :( You can't just "not think about it"

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Hi Ladies. I am at home recovering from an ectopic pregnancy that I had treated last night. I just got home from the er at 2:30 in the morning. I was only 5 weeks along in the pregnancy, but we're completely devastated. I thought some support on this forum could help me deal with my loss. They gave me a shot of the Methotrexate, and will be closely monitoring my hormone levels to see if it worked. If it doesn't, I'll have to get surgery. The main reason I wanted to post though is to let women know that you don't have to have ANY risk factors to have an ectopic. I'm 28, very healthy, and have had absolutely no medical problems, stds, surgeries or anything what-so-ever to indicate that I would be predisposed to an ectopic. If you have severe pain in one side in your first trimester, go to the er right away! My doctor said ectopics are absolutely life threatening if left untreated for even a few days. I should have gone to the er the 1st night I had the pain. She also said ectopics are really not all that rare. Don't assume you are not a risk factor for an ectopic. Better safe than sorry!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I am recovering from having surgery from a ectopic pregnancy. I was 5 weeks along and had sharp pains for 2 days and then they went away. I went to see the doctor and found out about the ectopic. What a horrible experience. I am so scared that my husband and I will not be able to conceive again.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

My husband and I were TTC. It only took a few weeks--really lucky, I thought. 2 weeks later I had indications of a miscarriage. We went in and my HCG levels were higher but my progesterone levels indicated nothing viable. They monitored my HCG levels for a week and did 4 different vaginal ultrasounds. The levels were going up but not doubling and there was still not sign of progesterone levels being normal (14-16). They saw nothing on ultrasound but with the progesterone low, they wouldn't have seen anything. I never had pain on either side. I was given a shot of methotrexate after a week. It took about 5 days for the levels (HCG) to start dropping but they did. It took 6 week of monitoring for the levels to finally hit 0. Before they hit 0 (they were at 16) I had a normal period and a month later a second. At the beginning of the 2nd period they scheduled an HSG. Everything about my tubes was perfectly normal (although the HSG hurt like crazy). Se, we're at 100% again and ready to try again. Because of the HSG I have up to a 30% better chance of getting pregnant again in the next 2-3 months. AND since the ectopic doesn't seem to have been tubal my ectopic risks are really only a little bit higher than they would be normally. It sucks. It's awful. I'll never stop thinking about what could've been and we think about our "poppyseed" a lot but we're looking forward now and hoping for the best. HSG's are run ALL THE TIME. I'd ask for one for sure after you've had an ectopic. They're quick. They cause what doctors want to call cramping (but I'd say it's a little more extreme than that) and you leave not really feeling anything. If nothing else it'll clean out any tissue in your tubes and up your chances for the next time around. Good luck!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

We found out yesterday after an ultrasound and two blood tests that the pregnancy is ectopic. The baby stopped growing at five weeks and the ultrasound didn't see anything but in the fallopian tubes. HCG levels dropped by the thousands in the course of three days. Doctors recommended no meds and no surgery for now as they said my body is taking care of it. I would love to start trying right away. The doctors have indicated to wait until my hormone levels drop to 0. My symptoms was spotting for a few weeks and severe cramps/pains on my left side. It is life threatening. I think any pain that gets worse as my doctor put it should be checked out. In this case I am glad my doctor did the blood tests and ultrasound so early just to make sure everything is okay.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

I am currently recovering from an ectopic pregnancy. I was 7 weeks pregnant and went to my scheduled doctors appointment only to find that they thought that i had a miscarriage. The next morning at 4am I woke up in agonizing sharp pain on my right abdominal. We rushed to the er to find that I had an ectopic pregnancy and needed to be rushed into surgery because of how far along I was. In pre-op getting ready for surgery my tube erupted and I was bleeding internally. I was lucky enough to have them repair my tube, but the recovery is tiring and painful since I can't move around. I am also very worried that when we try again that I'll have another ectopic pregnancy and have to have surgery again. If not found earlier, ectopic pregnancy is most definitely life threatening if the tube bursts. Any unusual sharp pains on one side, go to the ER! I almost died from the loss of blood and it was very lucky that we got into surgery right when it happened.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

This is the very first time I communicate with anyone on thebump and it saddens me that it's not a good way to get started on this website. I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks ago and went in for my first ultrasound yesterday morning. Took my husband with me so he could see our little "sweet pea" the first time I did. Dr didn't see anyhing... I was heartbroken because I had already had a false pregnancy in April. Luckily, is dr didn't leave it at that so he sent me for more ultrasounds and blood work. Hcg was high and the head radiologist found the tiniest of bumps in my Fallopian tube. Right away they sent me in for the shot. It was such an emotional rollercoaster. First no baby, then it's in my tube, then I have to rid myself of it before my tube bursts and need surgery. Now I have to wait and see how the hormone levels do. I don't want to ttc any time soon, but I will be paranoid when Im finally ready. I'm so happy that there has been support here on this topic. Good luck girls!

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Also, just like someone at an earlier date posted, I am 28 years old and absolutely healthy. Never had anything wrong with my health at all my whole life. Dr said "bad odds" that's all. I guess he's right. :-(

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

My niece was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy and she was stressed a lot about this, now her son is 5 years old and perfectly healthy. We helped her to overcome those moments, luckily her OB was very experienced and knew exactly what to do in case of an ectopic pregnancy. I wanted to buy steroids online and my niece asked her doctor if it was ok, he replied that I should think twice before using steroids but in my case it was the best solution.

Q&A: Causes of ectopic pregnancy?

Extremely rare? In what world is 1/70 extremely rare? My OB told me that was the statistic for ectopic pregnancies out of all pregnancies. He also told me once you have one your chances of having another double :( I'm so paranoid now, every little pain I feel I'm scared I may be having one, but that just means I have to pay extra close attention to my body and hopefully, if I do have another, I won't lose a tube!
