Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Should I stop drinking before trying to conceive?

Re: Should I stop drinking before trying to conceive?

The Bump Expert Yes. According to the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, alcohol can affect your baby's development in the very first weeks -- even before you know you're pregnant. (But don't freak out if you find yourself pregnant and you haven't been a teetotaler -- chances are the baby will be fine if you stop drinking now.) The bottom line is there’s no known safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, so while it may be a fun way to get in the mood, it's best to stick to your favorite lovemaking tunes, mocktails, and some sexy under-things to light the fire. If you drink, you'll risk spending the next nine months worrying if those few sips hurt your baby. And believe us, you'll have much better things to think about!

re: Q: Alcohol and TTC?

Let me get this right - if I knowingly have a drink while TTC, then I am a bad bad woman, but if I dont' realize I'm pregnant and go on a bender, then it's okay because lots of women have drank not knowing they were pregnant?American culture towards women drinking whilst pregnant is incredibly schizophrenic and assumes all women are alcoholics - made funnier because there are plenty of cultures and countries in which women who have limited amounts of alochol have perfectly healthy babies and aren't demonized.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

They say you should "cut down" on how much alcohol you are drinking, just to up your chances of getting pregnant. They also say you should stop smoking the reefer completely because it stops ovulation. Several woman have had no idea they were pregnant in the first couple weeks and were drinking a lot and had perfectly healthy babies. Good Luck :)

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I have some genetically inheritied diseases in my family, and when I went to the genetic counsellor, she during the initial risk questionaire, told me that the baby doesn't start pulling from your bloodstream until 4 weeks, or 2 weeks AFTER conception. So basically anything you've done before you find out cannot harm the baby. Plus people drank their entire pregnancies until just a few years when it was dicovered to be harmful and most children turned out just fine. They tell you to abstain while trying to concieve because it helps your overall health, which in turn can help you concieve. But don't beat yourself up for what you've done before you knew you were pregnant, chances are it has posed no risk to the baby

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

It shouldn't be a problem to have a few drinks now and then while TTC. I think Americans are way to strict on drinking. I drank alcohol every once in a while throughout my entire pregnancy and have a healthy baby girl now. So don't worry so much while TTC. You need to relax in order to up your chances of conceiving anyway!

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Pfft, as if smoking reefer stops you from ovulating. Trust me, I was a very big pothead for years and continued to be when I concieved. Now I am very pregnant, and scoff at people who say reefer stops ovulation or lowers sperm count, considering the father indulged rather heavily in marijuna as well. Maybe we were just very fertile, but I know many people who smoke marijuana and easily get pregnant. [/ a little off topic]

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

MODERATION- Say it with me! If you smoked a few butts a day and had a couple glasses of wine before you got pregnant...don't do anything dramatic! People all over the world have a glass of wine on occasion and their babies are fine!- More mellow in my opinion! :) Anyhow- the goal is to be happy and if you are going through Nicotine withdrawals or crave a glass of wine...your body isn't exactly "happy" is it? I would have to admit to smoking about 3 cigarettes a day throughout my whole pregnancy and having a glass of wine on occasion. I think back laughing to how many "older" women (think our mothers) told me that they where smoking in the doctors office up until delivery. Oh and- I also had COLDCUTS! One cannot take coldcuts away from a German girl! REEEEEEELAX! It seems to me that the people in my surroundings that did "everything" right are the ones that have the kids that are bouncing of the walls...but that may just be me. (Not looking to make enemies) Just saying...

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

1- You're not a bad, bad woman for drinking before pregnancy. Just like you aren't completely off the hook if you "didn't know." If you're trying to conceive, you're supposedly more likely to look out for the best ways to get pregnant. If drinking lowers these chances or there's a risk that you could be pregnant during drinking, then there really is no reason to risk it. 2- If you smoked during your pregnancy and it didn't cause any consequences, then you are very lucky. I was a preemie weighing in at 5 lbs. due to my mom's smoking habits. It's just common sense that you'd want the best for the child that you wanted to bring into the world. I think there is a lot of stress to be over prepared and paranoid about every detail. People in the Dark Ages were doing piss poor jobs of taking care of themselves and they still managed to pop out their share of children. There should be some concern over drug abusers or alcoholics who choose to endanger their pregnancy, though. (And I am most certainly not saying anyone on this forum is. I'm speaking overall throughout the country).

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

everyones body is different, and some even say smoking pot makes a baby more creative. To each their own I suppose. But as far as cigarettes, i would quit while TTC, because the stress of nicotine withdrawls can be worse for the baby then smoking. So unless you dont plan to quit, i would say it better to stop smoking while ttc

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

It seems there is a misconception about terratogens and your baby's health. I diagnose learning disorders in children for a living and have found that many families who smoked or drank occasionally during pregnancy ended up having children with learning deficits and health problems. If you are pregnant and drink alcohol, so does your baby. This can hurt your baby's growth and cause life-long physical and behavioral problems. One of the most severe effects of drinking during pregnancy is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). FAS is a group of problems that can include Mental retardation Birth defects Abnormal facial features Growth problems Problems with the central nervous system Trouble remembering and/or learning Vision or hearing problems Behavior problems Health during pregnancy should not be taken lightly.

the pothead and smoker: just because you two got lucky does not mean there are no health threats that come along with smoking when pregnant. and, by the way, if you cannot even give up smoking or drinking for your baby, how are you going to cope with sacrificing even bigger things for your child? grow up.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I just went to my first consult and we discussed this, since with my first child I didn't realize I was pregnant and drank. My son came out beautiful, healthy, and intelligent. HOWEVER - The doctor said that ANY alcohol can give a baby FAS and there is no way of knowing how much and to whom it will happen to. Some total alcoholics can have perfectly healthy babies - other mothers who had "just one" have children who are affected. Ultimately is it ever worth the risk?

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

To the women who bragged about smoking while pregnant. This is a very sore topic with me. I am a child of a woman who smoked while she was pregnant. I was a low birth weight baby. I was diagnosed with asthma as a child, have severe allergies and was sick with respiratory infections as a child. As an adult I had to undergo surgery on my sinus for the years worth of damage my Mom's smoking did. My asthma is mostly under control now, but when I get around smoke it triggers it. Do your child a favor and don't smoke while you are pregnant.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

It is known that when men smoke weed their sperm becomes "high" too. When this happens they can't find their way to the egg which makes it harder when trying to conceive. And smoking is awful for women to do whether your pregnant or not so stop trying to defend it.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is not a good idea unless done in moderation since babies cannot properly injest ethol alcohol. As for drinking before getting prego; I believe in moderation all is well.

jenmillard23 | May 21 , 2010 10:39 AM

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Drinking even a little tiny bit during pregnancy can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome; it is most likely safer after the first trimester, although any doctor worth his/her salt would tell you to not drink at all since no one knows exactly when alcohol can harm the fetus. One woman could drink only once and it could be the crucial point, causing FAS. Another woman could drink every night during the pregnancy, but if it's not at the crucial point, it wouldn't do anything. The point is, no one knows when that crucial point is. If you want a healthy baby, better to stop drinking immediately as soon as you find out you're pregnant, and if you absolutely must drink, wait til several months in.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I really have a problem with pregnant women smoking, just because you luck out by being selfish and continuing to smoke during pregnancy, doesn't mean that everyone should do it. My father's mother smoked during her pregnancy with him and he had a severe Mitral Valve Prolapse which caused blood leakage and his valve stopped work at age 45 causing him to have an arythmia and die. Women need to realize that you are responsible for taking care of a growing baby. Would you give your newborn a cigarette? Then you shouldn't be smoking while pregnant either. With so many things that can already go wrong, why make those chances higher? I currently have a neighbor who is pregnant and she smokes constantly... I want to say something but what can I really do?! Be healthy ladies, smoking is terrible for you and everyone around you.

FmC231 | July 02 , 2010 6:36 PM

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

RE: cheyeone - I totally agree! The night that I'm guessing my husband and I conceived, we were definitely both under the influence (and snowed in, haha). I'm now about 30 weeks pregnant, and our little baby girl is doing perfectly well. We weren't trying to conceive, so I was drinking up until I found out I was pregnant, and we still have had no problems (as of yet). Regarding mothers-to-be smoking, I agree that it's really irresponsible, but I do know how hard it is to quit. I was trying to quit about a month before I got pregnant (after multiple failed attempts). I was down to just a few cigarettes a week (mainly when I was out with friends or drinking), but when I found out I was pregnant, it made it that much easier to quit! For those of you who are smokers and TTC, I would try at least cutting down on your smoking before TTC. As cliche as it sounds, quitting has been one of the best things I've ever done! I feel so much healthier (even without excercising) and I can't imagine how much crappier I would feel during pregnancy if I was smoking on top of all the changes my body is going through. That baby should be your primary focus, as it's depending on you for it's survival (and since smoking is bad for us as adults, it's definitely bad for developing babies). Think of that little one as extra motivation if you're TTC and trying to quit! And Fm: I don't mean to be rude, but the ladies that are trying to quit don't really need people judging them for their habits. Like I said, I agree that it's terribly irresponsible to be doing so during pregnancy and very unhealthy, but they know that. Treating smokers like idiots does not change their minds about it, and DEFINITELY does not help with the quitting process. I'm not trying to say that smokers need sympathy, but it's hard enough getting over an addiction without people criticizing you along the way.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Oh, and Tikat: I totally agree with your comment about the people doing "everything right" that have the babies that are bouncing off the walls. I have to say that I've never smoked during my pregnancy (at least after I knew I was pregnant), but I have cooked with wine and had a few sips of it here and there. And with all the food restrictions they have nowadays for pregnant women, I don't know how we're supposed to eat! Whenever I'm concerned about a food during pregnancy, I call my mom and see if she had it while she was pregnant with me. I'm perfectly healthy, and she even had GD while she was pregnant with me. I think people are a little too paranoid now-a-days :)

FbachsCivvie | July 07 , 2010 4:02 PM

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

In my opinion, I would cut out smoking entirely. My best friend's Mother smoked while she was pregnant. My friend is 30 years old and 4'10' with severe throat polyps that the doctor says are definitely related. She was also born very low birth weight. It's only 9 months out of your lives to give up ladies, for the health of your child's entire life. Be responsible.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I just recently found out that I am pregnant (about 4 wks in 2 wks since conception). I stopped smoking and drinking as soon as I found out and my Sister who is a Nurse Midwife said it should be fine considering the baby doesn't share my blood until about 2 wks from conception. Moral of the story is, stop smoking and drinking. It's not easy to quit smoking, I've been a heavy smoker for years, but it's what's best for your baby.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

There are some medical journals coming out now about drinking during pregnancy, and it seems to show that in general, women who drank moderately (like 4-6 drinks per week) had babies that seemed to be perfectly normal. I think the people who said MODERATION are definitely on the right track. That being said, completely stopping alcohol consumption while pregnant can't be a bad thing for your baby.

hesterfoley@hotmail.com | October 12 , 2010 8:21 PM

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Because the way genetics work, every baby is affected differently. Some women will drink and smoke and their babies will be okay. On the other hand, some will be born with all kinds of disorders. I don't believe knowing someone who did this or that is good reasoning to drink or not drink, smoke or not smoke. Please think back to your science classes and remember that your conclusions should be heavily supported by evidence. The evidence shows that in a normal adult smoking is harmful and that a glass of wine a day can be good for you if you have no other medical problems. The evidence also shows that consuming more than one alcoholic drink a day is bad for you (and you can't save your days and drink seven drinks on Saturday :). The only thing that medicine has found that increases your risk of breast cancer is drinking more than one glass a day which says alot about alcohol and good health. This evidence should be enough to make an informed decision. I say don't smoke if you can help it, if you can't quit at least cut back, maybe the odds will be for you, then again they could definately be against you. I teach kids with true ADD and ADHD, its hell and they have a difficult time in school. I also say drinking a glass every once in a while probably isn't going to hurt (I personally wouldn't take the risk but I don't have an addictive personality either so its easy for me). As for the person that said sperm can get high and lose its way, ummm, its a cell, it doesn't have the capability to get high. Its not like it has a brain or "knows" which way it should be going. Research shows that pot can lower sperm count and cause low birth weight but there is no evidence showing that sperm can get high. Funny, but completely without scientific merit.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I know that this topic is about drinking, but since smoking has come up, I thought I would chime in. Instead of trying to cut out everything at once, I had a couple of months before we started trying where I cut my coffee consumption and stopped smoking the half a pack a day that I had picked back up. I've had such awful mood swings since becoming pregnant that I couldn't imaging trying being in the thick of nicotine withdraw right now. Ug, that would be awful. So yeah,I'm not trying to tell people when they should do what, but I am really glad that I started modifying my lifestyle pregnant before I was because it would totally suck to try and change now when I'm dealing with the emotions of my having my first child. If I had drank much before becoming pregnant, I would say that the same logic would apply.

I have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now. Since I use the iPeriod app on my iPhone to chart my cycles and use ovulation predictor tests AND we thoroughly try during my fertile time, I WON'T drink after ovulation in case we did make a baby until my next period begins and I know it's safe. However, prior to ovulating, I will have the occasional drink...I usually take my time and sip half the night until giving the remainder to DH anyways. I agree with colorschemer about trying to live with the lifestyle choices prior to getting pregnant...especially with coffee. I try to stay under 2 cups a day right now, and when I (hopefully) get pregnant, I'll go down to 1 a day. Trying to Conceive Ticker

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

okay, I know an old school OB who actually recommends one weak drink like a beer or wine cooler once in a while to unwind during pregnancy, it's unlikely to hurt. Chances are, you're going to make a good decision and not overdo it if you care enough to be actively trying to make a baby. My advice is, don't drink an amount that would be unhealthy for YOU, and you'll be safe while TTC. As to smoking anything, be it legal or illegal, c'mon now, use your brains. Sure "healthy" babies are born to smoking moms all the time, but is it worth the risk? I quit before I had my DD, almost 6 years ago now. And I've known kids of smokers with a wide range of problems linked to smoke exposure in the womb and out: ADHD, asthma, low birth weight, failure to thrive, allergies. Every time you take a drag, you're depriving your baby of oxygen and spilling toxins into their tiny system. The human body has an amazing defense system, but there are plenty of hazards you can't avoid, why expose them to one so directly? I've certainly never regretted quitting. And if you're afraid of weight gain, don't be. I gained a whopping 24 lbs while pregnant, then proceeded to take off 50 additional pounds of extra weight I carried prior to pregnancy in the following three years by being an active mom who had enough oxygen and energy to chase after an active little girl!

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I'll tell you one thing, you'll not freak out as much once you HAVE conceived if you just stop drinking altogether. I was NOT TTC, but we were preparing for it and I had quit smoking two months ago. I did have an occasional drink because we weren't planning on actually not, um, "pulling out" (sorry for the vulgarity) until the fall. About one month ago I fell and aggravated an injury in my hip and back, and not even thinking "Hey stupid, you're off the pill now and even if it's unlikely you could be pregnant," I took the prescribed narcotic pain medications. While they were low dose and helped a great deal and my GYN said that they probably had no effect on the developing embryo, I still spend most days worried about what I may have done to the unborn child that I am currently carrying (I am 6 weeks along; must have conceived right before I was injured). Seriously, I'll worry until the kid is like 20 years old now that the medication and also an occasional glass of wine did SOMETHING to him/her. So do yourself a favor and just don't drink while TTC unless you can handle the worry.

Obviously there are many opinions, some for and other against drinking alcohol while pregnant. I had the luck of running into an ex classmate that works as a nurse at an alcohol rehab NJ center. She saw my belly and asked when I was dew. We started talking some more and at a certain point she told me about alcoholic women who get pregnant and try everything to quit their addiction in order to have a healthy baby. She said alcohol is a no-no but half a glass of wine here and there isn't the end of the world.

If alcohol can have such a negative impact, how about a methadone treatment finished two months prior to conceiving? Can that harm the baby? As I see it, the body is already cleansed of other drugs and methadone can't stay in the blood for so long, can it? Has any of you been through such a treatment or have a loved one who did? Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Yes. A baby develops rapidly during the first weeks of pregnancy, even before the mother-to-be knows that she's expecting. Some research shows that even a moderate level of alcohol can increase the chance of a miscarriage.... cell phone spy software

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Experts haven't yet defined a safe level of alcohol for women who are pregnant nor do they know whether or how babies differ in their sensitivity and reaction to alcohol. But because the harmful effects of alcohol during pregnancy are well known, women trying to conceive and those already pregnant should probably play it safe and avoid all alcoholic beverages. cell phone spyware

To each her own, but I just could not justify "trying" to have a baby and drinking. The two just don't go hand in hand. So my husband and I decided to quit. The month we quit was the month we got pregnant. I'm 11 weeks today!!! :D

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Its pathetic for those of you who got lucky while drinking and smoking while pregnant think its ok just because your baby came out fine!, you might not see any disorders now! Well if you drink and smoke and dont care to stop, I dont think you deserve to have children! irresponsible and careless and SELFISH!!!

Vickie1211 | November 14 , 2011 2:14 PM

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

I drank plenty before I got pregnant and it had absolutely no impact on my ability to conceive. I smoked plenty of pot and cigarettes too. If that's your worry, then I don't think it really has any correlation (and I don't believe that I've ever seen any study that shows that it does). I agree that Americans are completely overly cautious about this stuff and I'd think a glass of wine every once in a while is probably ok. But my doctor advised me against it, so I've decided to abstain. As much as I miss drinking, smoking pot, and smoking cigarettes, I believe that if the health of your unborn child can't make you stop, then you probably have another problem to deal with. We shouldn't forget that we're talking about addictive substances. Even if you drink during pregnancy and your child comes out fine, if you can't stop, that means you can't stop. It's very difficult to be a good mother if you don't have the self-control to stop even when you're pregnant. Every person has to judge for herself, and i look forward to the day when I can have a couple of drinks with my husband or my friends. It's the bigger picture, it's 40 weeks of your life. If you can't stop, there are ways to get help.

Every couple months I travel to visit my company headquarters - I work with primarily men and it usually entails 'rubbing elbows' with upper management, wine drinking and sushi. My husband and I are wanting to TTC now - however, I am needing some advice and/or 'reasons' on why I wouldn't be drinking wine or eating sushi (my FAV!) without eluding that I may be TTC/pregnant. It would even look a little odd for me to order a 'mocktail' as they all know I'm a complete wine-o and don't drink hard liquor. Any suggestions??

This is to all the pot smoking replies. Smoking pot interfers with ovulation? LOL /cough BS. There are alot of things that can hurt your fertility, smoking pot is not one of them. After watching dozens of hardcore hippie stoners have plenty of children. Although they are probably heqlthier than your average person considering healthy diets, most dont smoke cigarettes or drink heavily. They are have wonderful brilliant children. I'd suggest worrying about eating organic foods and avoiding plastics before I'd worry about pot.

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Wow, so many options... So much judging.... Everyone is different and so are your bodies. Smoking is a no brainier. If you can't breath while smoking; then chances are your baby can't. Drinking as well. If you have a slight buzz from that half glass of wine, chances are your baby does too. As a mother you have a choice; what goes in your body and what doesn't. Who are we to judge anyone? If you choose to drink and smoke while during pregnancy just be prepared for the consequences if any. I was two months pregnant before I found out I was carrying and I was your typical 21 year old. After I found out, that day I quite EVERYTHING!; but the last 7 months were terrifying." What did those drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes do to my baby?" I would ask my doctor every time I saw her and I wondered every day up until she was born. I wouldn't say I was "lucky" because honestly there is no luck when chancing your child's life, but my daughter has no side affects of my actions. She is one of the smartest six year olds that I know. She is a top student in her class and what she comes home knowing amazes me everyday. She can learn 10 spelling words in less then a week. She is six and knows how to spell over 90 words already, and her favorite subject is math. (ok, you all get the point...) I'm grateful everyday that my daughter is as bright and as happy as she is. And I hope that her baby sister or brother is just as brilliant as she is come Sept ;) ... Congrats and good luck to all those new moms out there! And Congrats to all the moms that just upgraded to referees! <3

Q&A: Alcohol and getting pregnant?

Although I'm no doctor, the gut feel is that we shouldn't be consuming alcohol at all, unless it's contained in any medicinal items that are helpful to the pregnancy. Then again, there are so many other factors that come to mind too. It's not that easy to conceive! Hope this helps! Sean from:
