Pregnancy Prep for Moms-to-Be

Learn what you need to know before trying to conceive.

Thinking about making a baby? The most popular months to deliver are July, August, and September, so if you want to join the throngs of summertime mommies next year, now's the time to get busy. Clearly, a woman can get pregnant without a word of advice, but if you're eager to speed things along, here are a few tips.

Learn your womanly bits

If you paid attention in biology class, you can skip this one. If not, here's a refresher: You have ovaries. Your ovaries contain eggs. Sometime in the midst of your menstrual cycle (on average, around 14 days after your period starts), your ovaries release an egg, which starts a several-day journey toward your uterus (aka womb). If a sperm is hanging around and manages to hook up with the egg, you get pregnant. If not, your body flushes out the egg with a menstrual period. End of lesson.

Know your odds

Don't stress if you don't get pregnant right away. After all, you've only got about a 20 percent chance each time you ovulate. (Unless you're a teenager in the backseat of your parents' car. Then we're guessing your odds rise to about 72 percent.) Seriously, you have about a three-day window of fertility each cycle. You have to have sex at just the right time, and the sperm has to swim a long, long way to seal the deal. There's no need to call the doc unless you've been trying to conceive for a year or more (or six months, if you're over 35).

Take your vitamins

It's best to start popping prenatal vitamins at least two months before you start trying, and you should start getting at least 400 mcg of folic acid each day as far as a year or two in advance. When taken before and during the early weeks of pregnancy, folic acid has been shown to greatly decrease the risk of neural tube defects (like spina bifida). You can also find folic acid in foods like spinach, black beans, orange juice, and strawberries.

Get checked out

Sure, you'll be seeing enough of your OB once that test reads positive, but go ahead and schedule your first appointment before you even start trying. This preconception counseling session is a time to discuss nutritional habits and medical history, make sure your immunizations are up to date, and talk to your doc about any factors that could lead to pregnancy complications. (Tip: While you're at it, head to the dentist too--periodontal disease is linked to preterm and underweight babies.)

Do it, already!

Most health care professionals recommend that you have fun and don't worry too much about perfect timing in the first three months of trying. If you're excited to boost your odds, though, here are a few tricks:

[  ] Sex during the three days before ovulation gives you the best chance of conception. Check your estimated ovulation date on our ovulation calculator.

[  ] Tilt your pelvis after sex, so that gravity can help the sperm swim towards your cervix.

[  ] Orgasm. The pulsing that results can also help the sperm swim to its destination. (How this is achieved is, of course, up to you and your partner.)

[  ] Lose the lube. Most lubricants (including saliva) act as barriers to your man’s little swimmers. If you must have some help, the lubricant Pre-Seed claims to be "sperm friendly," or simply indulge in a little extra foreplay.

Does it decrease your odds of getting pregnant if you urinate right after sex? I read that you should urinate after sex to eliminate UTI's. Is this true?

by bspaz78

I was wondering the same thing. I have been told that you can get bladder infections if you do not urinate after sex (This has actually happened to me before). How long after sex can you urinate then?

by MRP

I was told my a friend, that her Dr said to stay in bed for atleast 30 minutes afterwards. Plus, it gives you cuddle time - or time to actually have control of the remote!

by elb26

Going to the bathroom after sex usually involves you using the same muscles to urinate that you would to, um, push out what was just put in your uterus (semen). So I would advise against it. You should pee before sex, if anything ;)

by neenerbean

I asked my dr about the urination thing. She recommeded urinating directly before sex and waiting 30 mins after (I think someone else mentioned that above) although my dr urinates every time immediately after sex and she conceived twins.

by hkenny

I've heard to wait 10-15 min. Who knows! Everyone gives diff. opinions on everything. If I have to go i'm going to go, otherwise why not just lay there together for a bit :)

by o*m*a

I was thinking the same thing last night... I heard to pee right after to avoid UTI's, but i was like, wait, isnt the semen going to come out too?? so i waited in bed about 10 mins, then watched tv... then eventually went to the bathroom haha

by xmrssheridanx

After all, you've only got about a 20 percent chance each time you ovulate. (Unless you're a teenager in the backseat of your parents' car. Then we're guessing your odds rise to about 72 percent.)Is this true? I would assume the younger you are, the more fertile.. but is the percentage actually higher when your young?

by xmrssheridanx

I was wondering the samething, I went pee about 5 minutes after and my husband said shouldn't you wait? Then I freaked out like I mess up TTC by going to the bathroom. So I guess next time just wait to make sure!

by jennkevin

xmrssheridanx: I think the 72% remark is definitely a joke. :) I sometimes think how strange it is, though, that teenagers get pregnant when they aren't even trying and some couples have such a hard time when they are trying!

by AbsoluteLM

Often after we are done, I am unable to keep all the semen in me, even if I tlit my pelvis...is this normal? how do I know any of it is staying in?

by PSUwifey

From what I have read, the chance to conceive is about 25% up until you are 25, then drops to 20% until you are 30. From there it drops about 5% for every 5 years. But I am not a doctor, so I could be wrong.

by Eris-Alexis

My husband has twins on his mother's side and father's side. What are the chances that I will have twins? Or does it only have to do with the egg?

by jaysears

I wouldn't worry too much about peeing after sex. If you gotta go, then go. I pee pretty much immediately after sex every time, and we got pregnant the first time we tried=)

by Juniper189

Have sex when you are experiencing clear, wet slippery mucus secretions. Reference material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billings_ovulation_method

Me and my husband to be been trying to have a baby all the time but i have my monthly vister but he wont have sex when i have it and we both want to have a baby what should i do about that?

by April 24, 2010

It would be helpful if there was a "pre-pregnancy" diet & exercise plan on this website for women who want to loose weight & get in shape before getting pregnant to ensure optimal health for mom and baby during pregnancy, delivery and after baby is born!

by toniturner

Does the Tilt your Pelvis thing actually work?

by Wedding Gurl

Do I really need to wait a week to find out? Yesterday was the 19th day of my cycle and I experienced what everything I'm reading is pointing to, implantation bleeding and cramping. Today I'm not bleeding, but I still have the slight cramping. Of course, I've already taken 2 test knowing it's too early - but we just want to know... we weren't really expecting to be expecting anytime soon, but we are starting to get excited at the idea that this is it. What are some good reads or where can I find more advice during this week of waiting to test?

by peaceofkeri

QUESTION: do most normal lubricants have spermicides? I really need something to aid in this area....is it okay to use it if we're trying to conceive? (haven't started yet, just getting all the facts :)

by jce1014

My husband and I have been trying to concieve for awhile, we have just been winging it, im only 25 and think my odds are pretty good, this past month sept we caught my ovulation time, I am really really hoping that it conected, but ia took a pregancy test at 6ish last night and af isn't due for 3 days it came out negative, but im still optomistic, am I getting my hopes up for nothing?

by blonde255

I have a 6 year old and a 2 year ols and i stoped nursing my son in march of 09 i have only had my MS 2 times sense march and that is pretty normal for me and my husband and i would like to have another baby and have been tring for two months now and no luck! I spotted for about an hour around the 16th and i have gotten two - HPT results! does any one have any advice that could help me out??

by heatherlvsjohn

ive read that lifting your pelvis after sex can cause a pool of sprem behind the cervix...which is not good. and then i have heard that it's good because it allows the sperm to travel up there. Can anyone confirm either??

by archuleta_princess

bspaz78- I don't know on the first question. But as for the UTI thing, DEFINITELY true. I can trace each time I had a UTI to a specific instance where I did not urinate. But that is just me, as I am extremely susceptible. HTH

by LindsayKara

Back when I was not TTC, we had unprotected sex and I went to the bathroom and tried to "squeeze out all the sperm", 2 weeks later BFP. Maybe that was just a fluke but if you are fertile your cervical mucus is goign to help in retaining those "swimmers". So if you gotta pee, go ahead, but even better just pee before sex and then no worries.

by MrsPCallahan

there are so many websiites that say they can give you your ovulation date and some contridict each other, which one is the most reliable?

by tweeknesss

My doctor has told me after were done, to prop a pillow under my hips and lay there for atleats 20mins without standing. It gives those little guys (and girls) a chance to make it there.

by jasminjones

Is it bad to take too much Folic Acid? Women's One a Day already has 400 mcgs then I also have another bottle of NatureMade Vitamins that contain 800 mcgs. Should I take both or one?

by mrsalbrechttobee

I workout on an eliptical and or treadmill for about 45min 5 days a week. Is it okay to workout regularly when your trying to get pregnant?

by Manal

This seems to be a good article but what about the people like myself...? I was on the pill for 10 years, got off in Jan. got my period on Feb. 1st and haven't had it since. So, what do I do? This article doesn't help me b/c I don't know when/If I ovulate if I don't get my period. I'm going to my gyno today to see what he says but in the mean time what do you suggest?

by mpayne

The cervix gets soft and the cervical mucous looks and feels slippery and clear like egg whites when a woman is ovulating. Read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" for much more information.

by abbieanddanny2011

What can my man do to help us conceive. I am taking prenatal vitamins and doing all that i can? Is there anything he can do to help the process?

by Melne86

I always wondered if saliva hindered sperm from reaching their destination. Now I know...haha. :)

by LeslieC30

Im a bit over weight myself ( not obese or anything). I stopped taking my BC a month ago and we are trying obviously. Even when i do conceive, I plan on excercising, getting into yoga and changing my eating habits( I have already) If I wait until I have the perfect body to have a baby i'll be waiting for an eternity..so...healthy lifestyle can be maintained at any stage of life.

by lilac09

Do most prenatal vitamins contain enough folic acid, or are they implying we should take a folic acid supplement along with the prenatals?

by Kazchrista

I thought laying there for 30 mintues after to give the guys a chance to get to the egg would be no problem but it seems like forever! Maybe because I know I can't get up =(

by aimeewinn

sperm and urine do not mix. Guys have preejectualtory fluid for that purpose. Since urine go through the same place in guys, fluid is released during arousal to make the next round of fluid matter.

by Rachel0183@yahoo.com

If your man is clean (and he should wash himself before you do anything, as should you), then you do not really need to pee right after sex.

by b.alexgilbert

Am i supposed to count 14 days after the 1st day of my last period the day i really start to bleed? Or the very first day? Sometimes, it's not quite a period to begin with. Make sense?

by katiebeck3

Urinating after sex is extremely important, and don't worry, it has a very minimal effect on TTC. It doesn't matter if your man "cleans up" before sex, it is the friction and sweat and body fluids that can get into the urinary tract that cause an infection. My doc said the best option is to wait 15 min after sex before urinating. This allows time for the sperm to make their way past the cervix. 15 min is enough time for the sperm to get where they are going, and whatever fluid leaks out while you are urinating is just the remaining seminal fluid and dead sperm cells.

by Honeycomb96

An article on webmd said that the best lubricant is canola oil or peanut oil. they will help the sperm because almost anything else will either kill or reduce tail mobility.

by marjoriemitchell

A pharmacist told me the main difference between prescription prenatals and OTC prenatals is the folic acid. You have to have a prescription for vitamins that have over 1,000mg of folic acid. Most OTV contain around 800. So they suggest to supplement the rest. Nature Made makes a 400mcg and 800mcg. I'm not sure what the cut off for too much folic acid is....

Is 20 too young to have a baby? Let me know what you think ladies.

by BeckaB27

From what I know 15 minutes is a good time to stay in bed afterwards. You definitely want to make sure you do go to the washroom at some point within the next hour or so because of the risk of UTI's. Another way to increase the odds of getting pregnant would be a position that has the woman on her back with pelvis tilted upwards (i.e. missionary with a pillow underneath). Hope that helps.

by JoseeJason

even when just laying in bed semen seems to leak out even if i stay in bed! sometimes i think my body rejects it???

by awilliams7078

it doesn't really make a lot of sense for urination to make a difference in your chances of conception. The urethral and vaginal openings are completely separate...unlike in several other species... so unless you're hoping a sperm at the labia are going to make a run for your vagina, I think you're ok. ;o) No urine will be flushing out any sperm from your vaginal vault or cervix. ;o) ...it just anatomically shouldn't matter one bit :o)

by Lisadoc68

TO beckaB27: I would say that it all depends on the person and their relationship with their partner. I have been with my Husband for 9 years just recenly getting married. I thought years ago that I was ready to have a baby but he wasn't so I waited. Now at 25 he is ready and I am so glad I waited because now I'm not sure I'm ready "right now". Make sure you are stable in your relation ship, job, and home befor you do anything. Remember when the baby comes there is nomore you or him it's all about the baby. CONVERSATION is key to a successful relationship and that is whne you will know. Don't thake this the wrong way cause I don't mean to come off mean, but if you need to ask if 20 is to young you aren't ready.

by janamg

I know I got pregnant on the pull out method 3 times all under the age of 25. Now that I'm trying to have a baby and will be 29 this year I can't seem to get pregnant. Been trying for almost 6 months with no luck. So I would say you're chances of getting pregnant as you get older do drop, how much I'm not sure

by bellalou316

My understanding is that the tilting your pelvis/gravitational encouragment of sperm is a myth.

by conceivably

I bought Pre Seed this week--let's hope it works!!

by ucfjen8

Re: Folic acid Just something to add - I'm in naturopathic medical school right now and the cutting edge for folic acid is that a good portion of the population seems to have a methylating defect; basically meaning you can't use folic acid supplements well. Now they are coming out with "methyl-tetrahydrofolate" in many quality vitamins BUT due to the lack of studies on pregnant women in particular, they can't put it in prenatals yet. Take it for what it's worth, but I'm alternating a B12/methyl-tetrahydrofolate vitamin with my prenatals while I'm in this phase, taking care not to overdo it. It's basically a more bioavailable form since that's what your body makes it into anyway (or should). It could be worth asking your doc about.

Has anyone conceived on the ovulation watch? My DH and I have been using it for 4 mths now hoping its not a waste of money?????

by Mztelf06

I usually urinate before and after. My doctor said it decreases the risk of getting a UTI. Certain women are more prone to bladder infections and I happen to be one of them!

by babylove90

We are pre-TTC and trying to gather information. I have read about hip placement, laying still, when to pee, and many ways of how to check when your ovulating as has my finance. It so over whelming! We are hoping to start TTC right after the wedding. I wish they had more than a check list on here of ways to prepare your body to conceive. We have read about frolic acids and multivitamins. We already eat healthy and well Its just so over whelming! But I am glad for articles like this one. They at least are giving us things to look up. We just wish they were more in one place instead of all over the internet.

the semen that end up in your uterus do not end up there from the ejaculate left in your vaginal canal after sex. they are propelled up into your uterus and through your fallopian tubes immediately in what is essentially a first ejaculation, and it's these first sperm that are the ones who swim better and have the chance of getting to an egg. The semanl fluid that remains in your vaginal canal, the stuff you all seem so scared to get rid of after sex, doesn't contain very many viable sperm and isn't typically the stuff that gets you pregnant. In fact, it is too coagulated to assist sperm in making their way up into the uterus. It's purpose is to help the initial ejaculate make it into the uterus by "plugging up" the vagina. And in response to the notion that peeing after sex uses the same muscles as contracting your uterus: that is simply horseshit. Your kegal muscles, which are used in urination, do not contract your uterus. They contract the walls of your vaginal canal. Contracting these muscles does not release sperm from your uterus or open your cervix after sex. These are the muscles of your vaginal walls which aid in urination. So, peeing after sex is perfectly fine when TTC. Not peeing is also fine. But, if you have to go then by all means don't hold it in. In fact, you're more likely to get a UTI from holding your urine then from semenal fluid. But please don't buy into these silly tales and stories. Do actual medical research. Read about human anatomy. Read about sex.
