We Got a Sneak Peek!: I Don’t Know How She Does It Photo: The Weinstein Company / The Bump
I was lucky enough to get invited to a preview screening of I Don’t Know How She Does It, the new movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker and based on the novel by Allison Pearson, along with a group of other journalists and mommy bloggers. The movie’s all about life as a mom -- here’s the gist:
Kate Reddy is a professional juggler. She’s not exactly the kind that you’d see at the circus -- she’s actually an expert at juggling her roles as a wife, mom and powerful career woman. Kate navigates bake sales, business deals and family time like Superwoman (with a few hiccups now and then). SJP, who’s a working mom of three in real life, plays Kate, and she’s got a star-studded and hilarious supporting cast: the dreamy Greg Kinnear as her super-supportive hubby, Richard, plus Pierce Brosnan, Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn, Busy Philipps, Seth Meyers and Kelsey Grammer. In the movie, Kate’s juggling act is given the biggest challenge yet when she lands a huge business pitch, which means she has to spend even more time away from home. And on top of that, Richard just landed his first big contract as a solo architect. Plus, throw in her responsibilities at her kids’ school and her never-ending to-do lists. Can she really handle all the pressure? Well, you’ll have to see the movie to find out!
After watching the movie, I have to say, as a single, unmarried and childless gal, I loved it -- but I’m totally freaked. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing about babies -- it’s my job here at The Bump, and I’m currently obsessed with them -- but Pearson really opens a non-mom’s eyes to just how crazy and equally rewarding mommy life can be! Now I’m in even more awe of my own mama (who’s a single working mom herself) and, of course, all the other moms out there. Let’s face it: If juggling family life was an Olympic sport, you moms -- whether you work or stay at home -- would get gold medals. I’m still a rookie, but I’m inspired and excited about having my own little munchkins (which will happen years from now, so don’t be scared, potential suitors!).
And yep, I did get to see SJP in the flesh (she’s gorgeous)! Both she and Pearson were part of a post-screening discussion, moderated by Moms and the City. It was a great opportunity to hear about Parker’s and Pearson’s experiences as working moms (SJP admitted she accidentally wore pink house slippers to her son’s school once -- a far cry from those Manolos on Sex and the City!), and also to find out what the moms in the audience had to say. We heard from working moms, single moms, stay-at-home moms, single ladies and even women who are childless by choice. If there’s one idea I’ll take away from the movie and discussion, it’s female empowerment. We really do run the world.
I Don’t Know How She Does It hits theaters Friday. Go see it!
