May Is Pregnancy Awareness Month!
Supermoms Anna Getty and Alisa Donner created Pregnancy Awareness Month four years ago and have supported millions of pre- and postnatal women since. Here, they answer some of the biggest questions of moms-to-be. Photo: Ron Hamad
The Bump: What’s the first question every pregnant woman should ask?
Anna: Be sure to ask yourself: “How am I going to take care of myself in order to have the birth that I envision?” The better you treat yourself now, the easier a time you’ll have in this transformation into motherhood.
Alisa: When it comes to asking your provider a question, don’t hold back; ask anything you want, as many times as you want, until you feel good about it. Just because you get an answer from one person doesn’t mean you should stop asking around. And don’t forget, the pregnant woman waiting in line at the grocery store can help too! Support comes from many places -- not just the doctor.
TB: Pregnancy is a roller coaster of emotions. How can women keep all of those hormones under control?
Anna: Journaling can be very cathartic. You’re going through so many emotions right now—one minute you’re laughing, and the next you’re crying! Keeping a pregnancy journal is a great way to get it all out and relieve any stress. And for an instant pick-me-up, prenatal massages are awesome.
TB: What are your tips and tricks for cutting down on morning sickness?
Alisa: First of all, we need to stop calling it “morning sickness,” since it can happen all day long, and there isn’t one cookie-cutter answer. Everyone reacts differently topregnancy. I loved ginger tea, Preggie Pops and snacking on Luna bars. Ana and I also loved O.N.E.’s coconut water -- it’s important to stay hydrated throughout your pregnancy.
TB: How can new moms feel better about their postpartum bodies?
Anna: First, accept that you’ll most likely never have your pre-pregnancy body again -- since it will have gone through some changes. But you can still get a slamming body! Your diet, fitness and genetics all play a part. Our rule of thumb: Be patient.
