Scary New Trend: “Mommyrexia”?
Whoa! We just read a disturbing article in The New York Post about a new trend called “Mommyrexia.” The paper reports that pregnant women are pressuring themselves to bounce back to their prebaby weight just days after giving birth. Not only are they starving and exercising to the extreme postbirth, but they’re trying to minimize their pregnancy weight gain, which simply isn’t healthy. The Post suggests these moms-to-be are influenced by celebrities like Rachel Zoe and Victoria Beckham who seem to produce nothing more than a bump during their pregnancies and almost instantaneously go back to being bikini-ready after birth. Obviously, we here at The Bump want moms and babies to be as healthy as possible and know that gaining too little weight during pregnancy can be dangerous, so we’re freaked by this story. We hope that the Mommyrexia trend isn’t as common as the Post is making it out to be.
What do you think -- is Mommyrexia a trend? What would you tell a friend who was worried about gaining weight during pregnancy?
