Fetus Parties: Say What?! Photo: Veer
Almost everyone has baby showers nowadays, but what about a fetus party? Yeah, you heard that right. People in the UK are throwing parties to celebrate ultrasound photos of their baby (er, fetus). Parents-to-be are inviting friends and family over to watch a video of their 4D ultrasounds. Apparently a big soccer star in the UK, Wayne Rooney, and his wife Colleen went so far as to hire a sonographer to come to their house and take images of their unborn baby in 2009 and since the trend has grown. Private companies now offer party planning and sonogram souvenirs (like fridge magnets and teddy bears).
But a UK midwife thinks the fetus party trends are commercializing pregnancy. Professor Cathy Warwick, chief executive of the Royal College of Midwives, wrote a column for BBC News discouraging the practice. She worries that celebrating too early could cause extra emotional problems if it was found there was something wrong with the baby later on. And some say that 4D scans could be harmful to baby -- especially if a woman is getting them often. She also thinks the child me be being exploited and that the trend causes ethical questions: “Are we sure we’re right to be looking at babies in the privacy of the womb in this intense way?” she asks.
We can see her side of it, but don’t we also celebrate baby with a shower before she’s born?
