Extreme Sports During Pregnancy: New Trend? Photo: shutterstock
Don’t worry adrenaline junkies, your active lifestyle doesn’t have to take a break when you’re pregnant. Many sporty mamas-to-be are in the market for rock-climbing (and mountain biking and kayaking), according to USA Today. There’s a company in Ontario, California called Mountain Mama that makes maternity workout wear for extreme sports.
We already know that exercise during pregnancy is essential, as long as you don’t overdo it. In fact regular workouts have proven to help expecting moms have an easier labor and help them avoid conditions like gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. And experts like Andrew Satin, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Johns Hopkins Bayview in Baltimore and Linda Samanski, who has a Ph.D. in exercise physiology, are studying how vigorous exercise affects pregnant women. So far, they’ve found that expecting moms can handle energized workouts. And we definitely believe it! Remember the mother who ran the Chicago marathon at 39 weeks pregnant ?
But we’ve got to wonder about something like rock climbing. Are these moms-to-be risking injury too much?
