500+ Pound Mom Gives Birth to 13 Pound Baby -- Was She Irresponsible? Photo: Shutterstock / The Bump
In July, we heard about the 16-pound baby boy, JaMichael, born in Texas. But that doesn’t stop there – a 13-pound baby boy was born in Berlin on Friday, according to ABC News. The baby boy, named Jihad (a term in Arabic that means “struggle”), is the largest baby born naturally in Germany. Yes, you read that right. His mother, who weighs 528 pounds, insisted on a vaginal birth, despite the high risks. Jihad’s mother had gestational diabetes and doctors also believe that she has a metabolic disorder, too. She already has 13 other children.
And although Jihad and his mother are safe and sound (after a labor that was most likely a struggle!), experts believe that the mother was irresponsible in handling her pregnancy and delivery. Although Jihad's mother claims she didn't know she had diabetes, doctors believe that she knew about the condition but kept on overeating. There could have been serious complications for both mom and baby with a vaginal delivery. For mom, there could be vaginal tearing and bleeding. For baby, his shoulders could get stuck or he won't get enough oxygen.
Do you think this mom was irresponsible? What would you do if you had a 13-pound baby?
