Should It Be Illegal to Take Pics of Someone Else’s Kid?
It may sound far-fetched, but the New Jersey Assembly Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would make it a crime to photograph or videotape children without their parents’ permission. According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the idea was proposed after a 63-year-old man was caught taking a video of 8- to 10-year-old girls at a swim meet and told police they were sexy (ew -- and scary!). He couldn’t be convicted of a crime -- since the kids were clothed, it’s not considered child pornography, says the newspaper.
The committee hasn’t voted on the bill yet, but according to The Star-Ledger, some of its members point out that the bill’s language is pretty broad and would have to become more clearly defined in order to be considered constitutional.
