Group in San Francisco Proposes Circumcision Ban Photo: Getty Images
Could circumcision become illegal in San Francisco? Maybe! A group opposed to circumcision has collected about 12,000 signatures supporting a ban on performing the procedure on any boy under 18, according to Reuters. Seem a little extreme? Well, yeah, seeing how the practice is part of many people’s religious practices, and the American Academy of Pediatrics isn’t against it -- it says there are some health benefits, but there are plenty of risks as well.
The proposed ban would make performing circumcision on a child in San Francisco a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a fine of $1,000. But it would need to be given the go-ahead by voters, and it doesn’t sound like that’s likely.
Do you think circumcision should be outlawed? Or should it be up to the parents?
