Do Moms With Sons Work Less? Photo: Mary Grace Long Photography
New (and totally head-scratching) research from Europe has found that moms in the US, UK, Italy and Sweden who had firstborn boys were less likely to work -- and if they did, they worked less hours -- than moms who had firstborn girls. The reason for this difference isn’t really clear, but researchers say it might have something to do with the fact that, in those countries, moms of boys were more likely to have more children (are they trying harder to have a girl?) or that moms who have firstborn sons are less likely to get divorced. Wow! We had no idea that kids’ gender could affect all that.
