Should Breastfeeding Get You Out of Jury Duty? Photo: Veer
I postponed my jury duty while I was breastfeeding my son. And while I like to think that a breastfeeding mama can do it all, I was relieved that the one-year postponement meant no pumping in a dirty courthouse bathroom or dealing with engorgement while waiting to get dismissed for a lunch break (and then stuffing my face with food during its last 10 minutes. I don’t know if this is how it would actually go. It’s just what I envisioned).
So I think it makes sense that Kurt Heise, a Michigan House representative, is proposing that nursing moms in the state get to postpone their jury duty, too. Right now, it’s only a law in 13 states that breastfeeding automatically gets you out of jury duty, and recently, one Michigan mom was told by a court clerk that nursing wasn’t a good enough reason, according to WKZO.com and the Lansing State Journal.
What do you think? Should breastfeeding get you out of jury duty?
