TTC? Why Your Guy Should Indulge in Sushi
Trying to get pregnant? For your next date night with your partner, make sure it’s at a sushi bar. According to the New York Daily News, researchers at the University of Illinois found that sperm need an omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic (DHA) -- which is found in fish -- to successfully fertilize an egg. The study found that a normal sperm has a cap-like structure that covers the anterior end of the sperm head. Without the cap, sperm won’t work correctly, and DHA is necessary to form the cap. Researchers observed male mice who did not have DHA and found that they had a hard time producing offspring, but when the fatty acid was added to their diet, they became fertile.
So what can be done when there’s no DHA present? Well, that’s where the sushi comes in. DHA is found in sources like tuna, salmon, eggs, nuts, broccoli and asparagus. So don’t forget to stock your fridge with them!
