Could Mountain Dew Make You Infertile? Photo: Antonis Achilleos
If you’re a big fan of Mountain Dew or other citrus-flavored drinks, this could be a problem for your fertility. According to a new report in Environmental Health News, drinks like Mountain Dew, Squirt, Fanta Orange, orange-flavored Gatorade, Fresca and other citrus beverages contain potentially dangerous levels of brominated vegetable oil (BVO), which is used in flame retardants and is banned in Europe.
Studies suggest that BVO could be building up in people’s bodies and possibly in breastmilk (yikes!). In a study with mice, heavy consumption of the ingredient caused reproductive and behavioral problems. Soda makers are not worried about the effects of BVO since they say that their products meet FDA standards. Researchers are still unsure of the exact effect of BVO in humans, since more investigation is needed and previous scientific data on the subject is scarce. But in the meantime, we’ll be going easy on the yellow and orange beverages.
What do you think of this study? Are you going to stay away from Mountain Dew and similar drinks with BVO?
