Did a Nurse Tell Mariah Carey to Drink a Beer to Breastfeed?
Hey nursing mamas: Have you ever heard someone suggest that drinking a beer could help boost your milk production? Yeah, we have too, which is why we think it’s super-strange that Mariah Carey supposedly got investigated because a nurse suggested that very advice.
On a recent episode of Piers Morgan Tonight, Nick Cannon said he was questioned by Child Protective Services in the hospital because of allegations that his wife, Carey, was drinking and/or doing drugs in her hospital room. His explanation? “A nurse suggested to my wife that if you drink Guinness…the yeast improves breastfeeding.” Okay, so we have no reason to believe that Cannon is lying, so let’s assume that this is, in fact, a rumor that spiraled wildly out of control. The thing is, just because someone tells you to drink a beer doesn’t mean you’re going to do it, right?
For the record, whether it’s okay to drink beer while you’re breastfeeding is controversial. The American Academy of Pediatrics says alcohol in moderation is okay (one or two drinks a week, and at least two hours before you feed the baby), but the March of Dimes recommends abstaining from alcohol completely while you’re nursing. And while some people sing the praises of the yeast in beer, others say that the alcohol can actually harm your milk production. What do you think?
Is it okay for nursing mamas to occasionally have a drink? Have you tried the beer trick -- did it work?
