Safety Alert: 5 Million Cans of Similac Infant Formula Recalled

September 22, 2010: Abbott Laboratories, the maker of Similac infant formula, has announced a massive recall on 5 million cans of its plastic-packaged powdered formula, after a small beetle was found in the product at the Michigan plant where it's produced. After consulting with the Food and Drug Administration, Abbott Laboratories ceased production of the formula immediately and initiated the recall in an effort to ensure that no other cans have been contaminated.

The recall doesn't just hit the U.S. -- apparently, cans of formula in Guam, Puerto Rico, and even some countries in the Caribbean have been recalled, as well. So what would happen if your baby did mistakenly drink contaminated Similac formula? According to the FDA, babies who ingest a beetle of this kind could suffer gastrointestinal discomfort and loss of appetite. If your baby is experiencing these symptoms after drinking Similac formula, consult your doctor immediately.

According to Abbott, products NOT involved in the recall include: All Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.
