Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

When should I start looking for baby names?

Re: When should I start looking for baby names?

The Bump Expert

As soon as you want! There are millions of names to choose from and tons of resources out there for you to sift through. If you don’t have anything in mind or you’re indecisive by nature, you should probably start talking names with your partner early on in your pregnancy. Whatever you do, don’t wait until the last minute -- you don’t want to be caught off-guard if baby decides to come early, and you definitely won’t want any added stress in those last few weeks if you can’t seem to decide. Many couples wait until they find out the sex of their baby to start looking, since it makes it easier to narrow the options more quickly.

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I'm not even TTC and I'm already looking at names (in about 6 months we'll be TTC).

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

My husband and I started considering names within days of finding out we were pregnant. We decided to wait to buy anything (that was hard) until the second trimester so discussing and discarding names for us was our way to be excited about the pregnancy without shopping.

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We've always talked about names. But I think we'll try and settle on one once we find out if it's a boy or girl.

As soon as possible! I think its fun?

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

As soon as you want....or you can make it easier on yourselves by waiting until you find out the gender.

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We were struggling with IF, so name shopping was a "this will happen" sort of thing for us. We've got about 6 options, and will narrow it down to two sometime. We're team green, so we'll need the two options! I say do it whenever you like! It'll give you lots of time to plan. But don't get your heart TOO set on a name before you're actually pregnant, someone close to you might use the same one or it may flood the market for some reason (e.g. Bella, Edward???) GL!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I'm just 8 weeks along and we have decided on 2 girl names...I think we're going to wait until baby gets here to decide for certain. And boy names? I can't even begin to think...maybe that's a sign we're having a little girl ;)

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We just found out we are expecting our second... our lil one is only 6 mo old... EXCLUSIVELY breastfed... lol So YES you can get pregnant before the 6 mo mark lol... but we have a boy... when I was pregnant with him we were SURE he was a girl... had all girl names picked out but nope a happy healthy baby boy... this time we have one of each already picked out and Im only 6 wks!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We started talking about it as soon as we got the plus sign on the home test, and decided on a boy's name rather quickly. I'm glad we started talking about it so far in advance because we just decided on a girl's name over the weekend. That's going to be our "Big Reveal" when we find out gender - announcing the name. (Granted once people found out we'd chosen names, it has been a lot of "we're actually waiting to announce the name when we find out the gender.")

kellyo78 | May 11 , 2010 9:47 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We had already had a boy name picked out...over a year before we got our BFP! So we are focusing on girl names since we can't pick something we both like for girls. That way, hopefully, by the time we know what the gender is, we will be prepared. It is a fun way to get excited about "doing" something without shopping. :)

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We had both a girl and boy name picked out by 8 weeks. However, they were names we had discussed before we were even pregnant (family names : Rosalyn Renee and Anthony-Michael).

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We had thought of a few before we were even pregnant, but really got talking as soon as we found out the sex. If you are concerned that a name you like is too popular, check out this site... most popular names from the Social Security Admin from 2009: http://bit.ly/cc4j0b

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

My husband and I have been together since I was 15 and we had names figured out before we graduated high school, and our daughter wasn't born for another 3 years. Names are fun to flip through, so have fun!!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We started talking about names towards the end of the 1st trimester....but took it more seriously once we found out we were having a boy. After weeks of going back and forth, we finally have a name all picked out (at 29 weeks). It's definitely a process.

MrsMirabellaNYC | November 28 , 2010 8:23 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I think its important to pick names as soon as possible... that way you have a few months to get use to the name or decide if you really like it. I am 10 weeks and I have a boy and girl name picked out. We like to say the name out loud to make sure it fits. :))

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I'm a big fan of names, so we were discussing them before we were even surprise blessed with our son. However, we didn't find out his sex before he was born--would've been a heck of a push to try to come up with names after we found out!

dreaming78 | December 31 , 2010 12:14 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We started to come up with names once we received the official word from the OB. However, I've been told not to have your heart set on a name as the baby may arrive and the name won't match them. We're not finding out the sex, so we'll keep a list of multiple choices for both genders.

BoxerMomma24 | January 14 , 2011 1:13 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I had a boy named picked out when I was sixteen or seventeen years old and read the book a secret garden.I changed the middle name and my husband and I plan on given our kids four names instead of three because he has four names. It is a tradition in his family.I'm pretty indecisive about things so if you are too.It a good idea to start as early as possible but I don't think it matters too much when you do.I have heard of people waiting until the baby is born. By the way I don't know what I am having yet but we do have a girl name picked out as well.

Killerbee5577 | March 27 , 2011 8:16 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

there is nothing wrong with getting ideas before you are even pregnant, you dont need to decide for sure til you know if its a boy or a girl :) thats when we are going to settle on one, that gives us time to decide and enough time for people to make any gifts with the name on it if they want! :)

myschlove | March 29 , 2011 6:25 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We have a few favorites of each gender (I'm only 5wks), but will probably narrow it down to our favorite two once we find out the gender. Won't settle on one until the baby is born though - I've heard too many stories of people who change their minds after meeting their little one!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We just found out I'm pregnant via HPT and we've already started "vetoing" names. It's going to be hard to find one we both like.

pittOPcouple | May 01 , 2011 12:16 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I guess the ideal time would be after you find out whether or not you'll be having a boy or a girl..However, what I realized was that my thoughts changed after my children were born, I need to see them to really know what name fit them best..

kawaihae09 | May 26 , 2011 3:46 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We picked 2 names soon after we were engaged. We knew we wanted children eventually (not necessarily this qucikly; we are 4months and got married 3 weeks ago Surprise!) But it was easy, and took maybe 10 minutes. The name picking, that is.

Blondathon | June 24 , 2011 8:19 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

When ever you are ready! http://www.babynames.com/ is great resource! Picking my daughters name was so much fun for my husband and me. As soon as we found out she was a girl we settled in on a name and called her by name throughout the rest of the pregnancy.

MamaLo1216 | June 25 , 2011 6:47 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

My husband and I just decided to start TTC in about two months and are already working on names. Honestly, I have talked about baby names with friends for year, so I'm sure he and I will move through tons of options throughout the pregnancy.

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I've had my girl name picked out since I was 13 :) I'm 10 weeks and we can't agree on ANY boy names. My husband likes very traditional names and I like more modern names..guess we've got a while to decide!!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

My DH and I had a few names picked out before we were even married and after we got our BFP we played with the list a bit and now have 5 for each sex. Sure this list will change over our pregnancy but, that's how we work. BACKWARDS!! I think whenever you want. My DH and I thought it was nice to just think about those things and say "I like this name" or "Really, you like that name?" . I think it's a personal decision. Good luck to everyone on baby names!!!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I'm 6 weeks along and hubby and I have had hypothetical name discussions over the years but nothing too concrete. We just found out a week ago and he is still very overwhelmed; we weren't TTC. Anyway I have a few ideas and I know he does too. I don't want to bombard him with baby talk all the time, so I think we are going to wait on the name talks until we at least tell our families at Christmas.

candivanlee | November 22 , 2011 2:48 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I know people who have had names picked out since they were kids- now whether their spouse/partner agrees with them might be different. I think any time is an ok time to discuss names whether TTC or not, but knowing the gender helps. We had boys names picked and waffled on girls until we found out we were having a girl then we had to figure one out. :)

cjhume | November 22 , 2011 11:19 PM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

I think it adds to the whole experience and in our case, it helps us get in the mindset that we are really TTC. We just started and we have played with a list of names :) Visiting my MIL this last weekend, we even asked her what she thought of some names. She helped us and that made her feel part of the process. I guess the key is not to stress too much or as someone said... Do not get attached to names.

KGFS11 | December 03 , 2011 11:11 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

My husband and I started choosing names (and had ours picked out) while we were still engaged. We had planned on TTC immediately after the wedding in late August, since he had to deploy only a couple months later. I'm glad we chose our names then, because it was one less thing to worry about having to get done before he left. I can't wait to find out at the end of this month if we are having a Silas Patrick or a Grace Elizabeth!

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

My Fiance and i threw around baby names as soon as i found out i was pregnant i was 21 weeks pregnant and we were sitting at the burger king in one of there booths and all the sudden i said Nicole and he just looked up and smiled and didnt say anything im guessing he liked the name because as soon as we got home that night he was having "baby time" as he calls it where its just him and her and im not allowed to interrupt he was calling her by that name and has been ever since!!! Im 32 weeks along now! Nicole is the name everyone and my mother in-law to be likes too!

CGallagher4993 | March 22 , 2012 11:02 AM

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

Why wait? Some people have known since they were kids what they wanted to name their own kids. I discuss options with my husband all the time, and long before we even started planning to have kids.

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

We started talking about names as soon as we got married. I am 13 weeks and we have already selected one boy name, and one girl name. We are working on middle names now. I say start as early as you like...there are sooo many options out there. It is something you can check off the baby to-do list :)

Q&A: When should I start looking for baby names?

Honestly, the sooner you start looking the better or worse. you will either be overwhelmed by finding it hard to decide between certain names you love or you will find a name, fall in love and it will stick. its up to you really. Ive started looking for name years ago and I am now only 8 weeks lol. all about prefrence

Once you learn you're pregnant I think it's hard not to think about baby names...you know you're going to need one eventually. We had a boy's name picked out very quickly so of course...we're having a girl! And we can't seem to agree on anything. Go figure!
